This is BY FAR my favorite Prince album. I can, easily listen to this album from beginning to end without skipping a single track. The Tony M raps don't even bother me at all on this disc. They are integrated into the music much better than on D&P and I look at them as just another ingredient in the mix. My Name Is Prince is the ultimate album opener for such an arrogant, boastful genius as Prince was during this period. From there on in it's a wild, fun, and funky ride through an amazing mix of styles all presented in a sexy, lush arrangement. In the same way that SOTT is great because of the minimalism, this albums succeeds in it's "throw-in-everything-including-the-kitchen-sink' approach to the performances and production. It manages to continue being fresh over the years because it provides so much for the ears! It stands with the best of Prince's efforts on every level, imo. I NEVER get tired of this disc. Huh. Everyone's taste is different, obviously.
I think the Symbol album is terrific, and has some incredible music on it.

I know it gets knocked for the rapping in the 2nd half, but I don't find it bothers me, I like the change in the song, and the whole audition thing 'What sign you are?.... Stop sign!'..... etc This is a great song from beginning to the very end, imo. I, also, think the 2nd half of the song just takes the whole thing to a higher, trippy level. Good stuff! Wow I didnt know there was so much love for it. What is my fam status. I am sorry it dosent work for me. Theres nothing landmark about sexy MF, take the Mf out of it you have a pretty standard 1950 style slick jazzy unremarkable pop tune.
Still he redeemed himself with Come and TGE lol 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

I agree. I do like certain cuts like 7, ...and God Created Woman, The Continental...but for the most part this album was a huge disappointment at the time and it still sucks ass. I liked Diamonds and Pearls MUCH more than this. Also 3 Chains o Gold has got to be THE worst piece of overproduced, overdramatic, Bohemian Rhapsody-rip off, flat out shit song the guy ever made. The only song that I hate more than this is the title track from Graffiti Bridge. This is the album that STOPPED me from being a Prince fan for awhile.[/quote]
THANK YOU, a gopod analysis of three chains of gold which is cod. I could imagine he would have to give them back after this crap 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

This is one of my favorite Prince albums! I played this CD to death back in 92/93.This album is truly inspired, with one killer track after another. The whole "rock soap opera" concept was very intriguing and it inspired Prince to write some really strong, memorable songs. The hypnotic "And God Created Woman" is one of the most amazing Prince songs ever...."Damn U" is just heavenly..."Sexy MF" is Prince at his baddest, the best James Brown-influenced song he's ever recorded...."Love 2 The 9's" is a wild rollercoaster ride of a song..."7" is a classic Prince pop gem, with one of the strongest choruses he's ever written...."The Continental" really should have been a single,it's one of Prince's most vibrant rock/funk jams.
Without question, this is the best album Prince recorded in the 90s.It kills everthing that came after, imo.

I agree.Tony's raps don't bother me at all.In fact,I like the rap he does on "Sexy MF".This time around, his raps were integrated into the music much more effectively,so that his rhymes don't feel "pasted on" like they did on 'D&P'.

Without question, this is the best album Prince recorded in the 90s.It kills everthing that came after, imo. I had to quote all of this because it's just so true for me, as well. I played this disc so much after release that my boyfriend could recite the track list in order, complete from beginning to end for ages afterwards... and he really is not fond of Prince at all. I think he likes two Prince songs in total - I Wish U Heaven and Call My Name.

Grafitti Bridge at least has a few gems on it, but theres nothing on Symbol thats a gem. 7, Morning Papers and a couple of other songs are OK but the rest is a self indulgent experiment. The shit dated the moment it came out. The only reason it did fairly well was because of the hype caused by Diamonds and Pearls (Just like the ATWIAD sales figures caused by Purple Rain fans expecting Purple Rain II). U look at it theres hardly anything good on it. Theres no Joy in Repetition, The Holy River or Musicology type songs here. I mean 7 is a fairly average pop song and The Morning Papers is a fairly good soul ballad, but sandwiched in amongst the ok stuff is filler like Blue Light, Arrogance, The Flow, Damn u and to add to it some of the weakest Tony M raps this side of 1992. He kind of deserved it after he sacked the talented Rosie Gaines and Diamond and Pearl (Why kil a winning recipe man). The only 4 out of 5 song is my name is Prince, its a good starter, shame it goes downhill after that, aamzing how Prince got over the Victor nonsense afterwards. Sorry guyas but I got over this album in early 93. So do you agree and do you think Graffiti Bridge is Sign o the times compared to this self indulgent boondoggle. Are you kidding? It´ like one of the best albums EVER!!! DAMN U, for example, is a complete masterpieceů for me! "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

but other then that its a real fun album...the energy of it is awesome..i wish prince would be able to recapture that vibe on his more recent works. Space for sale...

Worst album by Prince ever - "Chaos & Dsorder" - the name speaks for itself and it was a purposely titled album as a direct slap in the face of WB and how they do business and anyone who thinks otherwise is freebasing still. Living to die and I'll die to live again - 360 degrees - comprehend

He's not performed lots of his material, doesn't mean he thinks his music is trash. C&D is far from trash and it's hilarious how people have been duped into believing this is just a hodgepodge of material like on the Vault. This is a cohesive album and it's oozing with energy. Definitely not an album of throwaway songs. Compare some of the original versions (Zanalee) to the version on here and you'll see there was effort put into the production of this album and that Prince did not just pull vault tracks and hand em over. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

2 each his reach, I suppose...
My 2 least favorite albums R 'Diamonds & Pearls" and "The Gold Experience". Most orgers love 'The Gold Experience', but I can't stand "319", "Now", or "Pussy Control"... They ruin the album, they're so awful. The "symbol album" is great. 4 such a long CD, it's amazingly solid. The great cuts have already been mentioned in this thread, so I won't list. I adore "3 Chains o' Gold", but most folks here don't like it. The complexity and diversity of the "symbol album" is deep. This album was a welcome "return" 4 me, after "Diamonds & Pearls".
