Apparently his muse this time around was a pile of dung.

if 3121 has broad appeal
rather than only appealing to a select few
then i guess she was rather smart

good music speaks to everyone
" the embassy shut to keep the fools out " - as above, so below.

murph

A somewhat silly, misinformed thread (no disrespect)...It's cool to spark debate...but to ask if the man that made such socially conscious, groundbreaking works as "Lady Cab Driver," "Darling Niki" "Jack U Off" and "Hot Thang" is the same man that made TRC, is well..you finish the sentence...

Is this the same guy that wrote Jughead?

lol
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

Yeah, it's quite daring, isn't it? wink

But I agree, hard to believe the same person who made TRC made such pop-smeared-pre-fabricated-MTV allocated-drivel.

I don't care much for the preaching of TRC or the much lauded "Darth Vader" voice, but it does contain inspired and daring wink music, at least by the actual definitions of the terms.

If that's what you dismiss 3121 as, can't Purple Rain share the same criticism? It tried just as hard to be a hit.

Key difference - yes, he was going for hits with Purple Rain, but they were hits on HIS terms...HIS sound...HIS formula (remember, he's already scored hits in the past and had finally figured out what it would take - and of course the simple fact that Purple Rain is a great album that still stands today).

3121 is, for the most part, trying to follow what the current hit making formula is, and pretty much fails from that perspective. The only song with any chance of being a hit is "Lolita" - why? Because it sounds like a Prince song, and is fun and catchy and accessible and all of the things that make a pop hit. Not saying that it will be a hit, but that its the only song on the album with any chance. "Black Sweat", "Incense and Candles" are lame attempts to use "today's sound"..."Love" has a great synth line, but lawd, the drums sound dated! I think he used the drums or at least parts of the effects from some of the early 90's cuts (do I dare utter the name "Jughead"?? nooooo!).

This album is fairly typical at this point - a few standout tracks and some real clunkers. The clunkers are so frustrating b/c we all have our ideas about what could easily be there instead...but yet...sigh...

Dear Prince:
3121 is not on YOUR terms, YOUR sound, and YOUR formula. I guess you had someone else write, record, and produce it. Why would you do that?
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.
