"Love" = the sh*t This, and "Black Sweat", have personally been the only highlights of the album for me so far (I just have to listen to "Fury" and "The Dance", and then I'm done). Deserves to be a huge hit in the clubs, no?

Love is already a classic Prince song.
It's like a perfect combination of Disc III of Emancipation and an MJ song, except Prince does it better than MJ has in years. It's the most seamlessly melodic song on 3121. The only highlight? Absolutely not. Not for me anyway. Definitely the top one though. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Funny how you mention Disc 3 of Emancipation cause that's my favorite of that whole set. Love reminds me of all the good dance songs on that CD but I like this one more. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I thought the overly plastic production of Disc III overshadowed the strong melodies of a lot of those techno-sounding pop songs. Love avoids that pitfall and gets it completely right. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I see where you're coming from with that. I wasn't bothered by how "plastic" Disc 3 sounded. I was just happy to dance to it. I can hear it but it doesn't grate on me. Thank goodness Love doesn't fall into that category.. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Lolita is the only song on that album that I don´t like...I mean Satisfied isn´t really great either but Lolita is embarrassingly bad...and bad not meaning good in this case...WTF was he thinking? Other than that it´s a pretty tight album....especially 3121 is a hell of an opener...kicks major ass...but Lolita ??? Sorry, absolutely not my cup of tea.
Love on the other hand is killer, it reminds me a bit of Sleep Around and New World , but in a good way...it´s much , much better..this will be great when performed live. Who´s singing the background ? [Edited 3/11/06 12:07pm] " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! I'd guess Tamar. Damn, has The Kid taken a liking to her or what?
Also, I dig Lolita. It's a fun "dirty old man" song. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Only around here and to the die-hards. Imho it's a stale number with terrible lyrics. No hard feelings.

Where else would it be a classic Prince song? The album hasn't come out yet. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

And "Love" is absolutely my favorite song from the CD at the moment...(tends to change every four days or so..

Yeah, Love is definitely my fave from this album. The Dance is close though. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

And the rhythm guitar at the end??...*shakes head*...so nice!

That rhythm guitar is classic Prince. Let's see Britney or Justin do that. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

The sad part is that if "Love", sounding exactly the way it does on 3121, were a single by MJ with Janet singing background, radio and the pop world would be all over it like it was the best song released over the past 10 years. With Prince, tho, it'll probably never see the light of day beyond hearing it on the CD.

So nobody else uses rhythm guitar in their music? Come on... This song is tailor made for a video with twenty dancers and Justin, Britney or Christina at the front. Or maybe Fergie with the "There ain't gonna be no drama," line. No hard feelings.

Yeah, it's sad. It'll get almost no spins, while radio will still probably be cumming over more boring shit like Check On It... Wall said: PurpleKnight said: That rhythm guitar is classic Prince. Let's see Britney or Justin do that.

Your criticisms of the song really don't make much sense...mindlessly attaching stereotypical qualities associated with the most vapid things in pop music to "Love" isn't enough...nor did PurpleKnight say that only Prince uses rhythm guitar. It's the way he uses/plays it that stands out, the prominence he gives it, etc. Name the best use of rhythm guitar on a Britney song for comparison's sake. [Edited 3/11/06 13:25pm]

I'm not familiar enough with her music and I'm using her name a catchall for cliche'.
Prince made the use of rhythm guitar iconic? Ok... It's a paint by numbers MTV song to my ears. The beat, the synth, the corny lyrics, the break down at the middle just aching for the do' rag outfitted dancers to pop and lock to the thump-thump... I love Prince to death but the only thing I hear in that song are the hallmarks of modern teen music. No hard feelings.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah, 'cause every "MTV" artist plays a funky rhythm guitar admist a techno beat. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

That's probably because you don't really listen to "modern teen music"...I have a 13 year old daughter, so I've been listening to that stuff for several years now. Trust me, "Love" is not plucked from anything in that mold. And also trust me...nobody, anywhere, has listened to a Britney song and said "Wow, don't you love the rhythm guitar she uses on this cut"...lol (or Justin, or...)

Great lyrics, contemporary while very authentic and surprising production - how good can a song get? I love it!

So this song is classic because he plays rhythm guitar? And how much is there? A little riff at the end? I just don't hear anything other than tripe, sterile commercial sounds coming from that song. Sure the guitar is funky but because it's under a pro-tools beat doesn't make it 'classic' or 'genius' in my opinion. So does any song that contains a snippet of rhythm guitar become a classic? If so, we need to induct about a 5,000 songs into classic status. No hard feelings.

Distorting what someone says in order to still be able to "stay on point" never works very well. Show one post on this thread that says "Love" is a 'classic' Prince song ONLY because it uses rhythm guitar. I'll wait if you want. And how much is there? A little riff at the end?
As well as right after each chorus (there are three, btw, and all come well before the end of teh song), which really help underscore the infectiousness of the chorus in my eyes... I just don't hear anything other than tripe, sterile commercial sounds coming from that song.
That's a fine description of your personal tastes, sure...but you've yet to say what it is that makes it tripe to you. Saying you hear an amateurish use of "Pro-tools" is the closest you've come (and you didn't even say it as well as I just did right there...lol) Sure the guitar is funky but because it's under a pro-tools beat doesn't make it 'classic' or 'genius' in my opinion. So does any song that contains a snippet of rhythm guitar become a classic? If so, we need to induct about a 5,000 songs into classic status.
Again, distorting other people's opinions in order to keep your arguments going only goes to show that you aren't very good at backing up your argument. You don't like it, no big deal, nobody really loses sleep over whether or not Wall digs this song. But please, if you're gonna toss your opinions onto the pile, give us something real to chew on other than the generic "Sounds like Britney, it's tripe to me" retorts.

Do you know what pro-tools is? Apparently Prince does these days. I think the song is basic, tripe, standard, nothing inventive, organic or engaging. The beat is programmed, the synth is like a mouse in heat and the lyrics are banal. I'm not sure how descriptive you want me to get before you understand why I don't think this song is 'classic.' Hence my comparisons to today's pop music, that's exactly what is sounds like to me. Manufactured. Pre-made. By the numbers. Rudimentary. Simple (save of course for that life-changing rhythm guitar at the end which is played under a 'techno' beat - mercy!). Nothing new and nothing exciting. No muscianship. Lyrics that sound like they were composed by a 16 year old.
And so what, o bard of musical critique', do you hear that makes this song a classic? No hard feelings.

Sure you want to ask me that question?...I only ask you this because I never once said it was a "classic"...Again, I'll wait if you want while you try and find anywhere in which I said it was. Once you find that, ask me again.

All right, I apologize you never said it was classic, I got you confused with PurpleKnight.
Regardless, I'm glad you enjoy the song, at least Prince didn't waste his time making it if it's bringing someone joy. I've tried listening to it again in the last few minutes and I just can't get into this one, sounds far too predictable and desperate from the outset to me. He'd definitely get a B for those lyrics in an honors high school poetry class, though. No hard feelings.

Surprised you guys like Love so much - I think The Word is a much tighter peace of music - Don't you think The Dance is better in its simple form on the CI?? That said that album is growing on me in a big way
