Acknowledge Me

I love this song except for the second rap at the end. Is there an edit version or any other version without it?

It´s one of my favorite Prince tunes. Should have been included on Come or on the Gold experience instead of "We march". I actually like it when Prince raps. I just don´t like his guest rappers like Tony M. or Scap D.

One of his weaker songs in my opinion (Prince jus ISNT the man for modern dance / house music, most of his cuts in this vein sound very dated in my opinon, and most of them also lack good songwriting in terms of a catchy melody, or a good chorus).

It were songs like these that made me loose interest for Prince during the mid-nineties: very mediocre material like Acknowdlegde Me, Space, Loose and the many plastic-sounding R&B's songs on Emancipation is not what i am looking for in Prince. I mean, on the contrary even, i became a fan of Prince around Parade / Sign of the Times, because he was creating original, eclectic, inspiring music during the time when the radio was full of watered down, plastic sounding New jack swing / R&B en awfull europop from the likes of Stock, Aitken en Waterman.

Prince, in that time, was a postmodern artist touching heart and mind with his music, reaching the mass-audience with his more catchy efforts but also getting a lot of approval by the so-called serious (alternative) music critics. His music, in his eclectism and appeal, mixed elements of the past and new elements in a 'eighties' way without sounding like all the commercial crap on the radio.

During the mid-nineties Prince became to sound like the artists he did rise above during the eighties, and sounded often of out date, not himselve, trying to produce music he just int good at (dance, modern r&b). Also personal problems, the whole slave thing, crazy marketing strategies, losing his mind to the JW and fusionjazz and a overall lack of direction, overshadowed his music around that time.

I bought musicology, based on the positive remarks made about in in the media and on the net. Its a slight improvement in my opinion, more focussed songwriting, better melodies in general, but poorly produced (a ***-star cd in his catalogue). I dont listen a lot to it.
I must say i aint very impressed by Te Amo Corazon (nice production, mediocre melody) and Black Sweat (in the eighties even his outtakes were way better then this), but i must say Fury has a very good blues-rockalike melody and it sounds inspired, and i have read some positive reports on the listening sessions about 3121. So, i think i am gonna buy this cd.

I really see no sign at this moment that Prince can achieve the same quality with his music as he did in the mid-late eighties, but with a little luck 3121 might be on par with the Gold Experience (Princes last 'very good / ****-star cd in my opinion). I wait and see wink.

I love this song! I like the little rap too! But I thought the Mayte's choreography was excellent too in the video.

Isn't the line:

"It's 4th and goal and I ain't about to punt"

?

Which any American football fan will tell you actually makes complete sense.

You would be correct.

The version in the Beautiful Experience film doesn't have the rap, either.

There's a few live songs in The Beautiful Experience - Days Of Wild, The Jam/Shhh, Now, but the rest including Acknowledge Me are studio versions with specially shot videos. Acknowledge Me is basically Mayte dancing on stage to the song with a couple of dancers.
