I'm not sure posters mean that much.

Any word on how the studio version of Fury differs from the awesome live renditions of it?

I still can't help but think that this isn't going to do so well if they don't get a damn single to stick. First week sales will be great but without a single I can't imagine it going Platinum.

If Universal can't secure a hit single, I think it comes down to TV appearances (especially those with performances) and the strength of the reviews. If Prince really works the talk/awards shows with a string of memorable performances, 3121 should have a nice run. And if the album garners a plurality of very good to excellent reviews (particularly from key outlets like USA Today, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, NYTimes and LATimes) it should do well. Should the stars align and both occur, the sky's the limit.

In the wake of the mega-successful Musicology tour, I think music fans -- especially that great untapped market in their 30s and 40s -- really want Prince to succeed. Because the singles market is decidedly youth driven, Prince's base isn't likely to score him a hit in that arena. BUT, the demographic that Prince appeals to generally displays their support by purchasing the album (think Norah Jones, who had no Top 40 pop singles from her monster debut, or the bestselling "O, Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack that likewise produced no pop chart hits).

If the general feeling in the air is that Prince has delivered on the promises inherent in his 2004 "comeback," I think 3121 will be a resounding success.

(Or I could be way off base and 3121 will under-perform no matter the circumstances. boxed)

Peace, David

its not that unlikely, it has been rumoured that a live session is in the works from more reliable sources than popbitch.

in fact, that rumour from popbitch is really just sticking a month (a likely month too) onto a pre-existing rumour

3121 in now #33 in Amazon.com sales rank. That is out of THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS. Don't 4get all these pre-orders carry over to the release date... THEN it charts, we are looking at a #1 hit for sure! the sales so far are stronger than Musicology and that made #3. And 3121 isn't even out yet!

I don't understand this whole philosphy. If a consumer buys a single, it means they are interested in owning just that one track that they've heard on radio or wherever. So how do single sales affect the sales of whole albums? Why would a consumer care about the other songs on an album project if they already have the single they are interested in? Help me get it.

Another thing about the Cult of the sales chart. You realize that sales are counted by the amount shipped, right? So whatever the distribution company ships to retail is the number that shows up in the soundscan 'charts'. How is that an indication of how well the CD is being received? And why does anyone even care about how many other people are buying the CD that you will buy?

Don't label me 'hater', I just want people to wake up from the illusion of charts.

Hah, I love those small review quotes. Some of them aren't even doing him any favours: "true return to form" (does he now freely admit being shit for the past years?), "It's a future funk album and also very spiritual" (they couldn't find one more compilmentary comment, this doesn't even say it'd be good) smile

nod I'm tired of the BS "return" "comeback" comments for every albums since maybe 1991.
