Which LP has dated most badly? Listening to a whole range of Prince's albums lately, and one thing I've noticed is that some of his older albums (the classics) like Parade, Around The World In A Day, Purple Rain really have a timeless quality, they just don't sound dated (and even when certain parts of them might, it still sounds fresh, exciting and different).
Funnily enough, I think the 90s New Jack Swing sound that some of the tracks on albums like Graffiti Bridge sound most dated, far worse than the stuff mentioned above (although of course, songs like Joy In Repetition, off the same LP, also sound timeless). | |

I always thought that alot of 1999 sounds dated, doesn't mean it's not good though. e.g. The synth line of Delirious really sounds cheesy!! | |

i'd say is I think it's because of the hip-hop sound 2 it. it'very out of date. I also thought that album was 2 long. | |

I think For You sounds quite dated and Controversy does too. But mostly Emancipation is filled with sounds that don't exactly sound great today...Jam of the Year anyone? Christian Zombie Vampires | |

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that something can date 'badly', though. Many songs, may, eventually sounds 'dated' but unless someone puts out a record with the specific intention of following a short term trend (and that record somehow, someway has no other value) then I just don't get it. Outside of shallow pop, there's a heck of a lot of music that is produced today but could be from several other points in time. Is it 'dated' upon release? Now lyrical references can certain become quickly and noticeably dated or fade into 'obsolescence', imo. "Ronnie, Talk To Russia" or "1999" might be good examples. On the reverse, there are certain albums that do seem more undefinable and more "timeless" than others. | |

One of the things that I enjoy about the album is that many of the tracks have a rather complex arrangement and lavish sounding production in general. It's almost the antithesis of SOTT but, in the end, I think this helps give it extra life because you can always hear something new if you listen closely enough. | |

I would say GB. I know there are some good songs on it, but looking at the LP as an overall, I just don't think it stood the test of time. |

I think Purple Rain sounds really dated. Except for When Doves Cry and possibly Purple Rain (the song). As someone said earlier, that doesn't mean the album isn't good. But Sign O' The Times, to me at least, doesn't sound too dated at all. Definitely agree about the album. So there you go. | |
