Don't forget STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN.
Anyway, I have always been amazed by Prince's guitar playing ability. The issue was settled for me the first time I heard the Small Club boot version of Just My Imagination. That still gives me goosebumps. I think the whole 80s popstar thing is what prevents Prince from getting the proper respect in terms of his guitar mastery. The uninformed music fan who takes notice of Prince about every 5 years thinks of Prince as the person humping the floor in a purple rain suit while licking the V he makes with his index and middle fingers. So, in my estimation, Prince's own 1980s celebrity (and the reasons he became so famous in the 80s) is what holds him back from getting respect on the guitar. Most people can't look past Purple Rain. That is all that they know about him. It doesn't change the fact that he is a phenom on the guitar.

Y'know this type of discussion (if your're inclined to label it as such) gets old pretty quick. Why can't some of you just accept the musical diversity that exist in the world without resorting to insults or other bits of nastiness. All of this is what you as an individual dig & respond to, if the cat standing next you sees things differently, let them enjoy their vision.
This topic is very subjective and relative to what you may or may not have been exposed to. However, I'm extremely suspicious of anyone who goes out of their way to slag one artist (and I use the term rather loosely) in order to exhalt another. Damn.....man I know I should have steered clear of this thread... KSTRAT [Edited 3/22/06 5:57am]

Are you certain thats Prince playing the solo? It sounds more like something Jesse Johnson might peel off. Especially, the phrasing & the whammy dips.

I believe the SNL performance of FURY was to highlight Prince's guitar excellence in the midst of a somewhat guitar resurgence from the likes of John Mayer, and others.
Prince really did some great guitar work, and FOOT work slapping the pedals with Wah, phaser effect, and tremelo effect..not to mention switching from clean to overdrive (chorus effect on both, all pedals probably BOSS) for verses and solos..continued with whammy bar work (notice the Floyd Rose trem locking system, big in the 80's, now no one's using them....exactly why he is!!), heck at one point he sang harmony with the guitar... So you get a full range of expression that was refreshing and innovative and blew so many people away.. People miss that energy when we're bombarded with mid tempo ATari video game beats, etc. Now if we can just get more rock/groove music going in this society...

u could argue all day about who is the greatest guitar player....all i will say is that he is a wonderful player in all aspects and is very underrated in general but the reason i am such an admirer of him is ,imho , the greatest all rounder in popular music, he is a bona fide musicial genius and i would argue with anyone who thinks he is not. When you listen to Richard Thompsons playing on "The way it goes" from the album "Mirror Blue" you will understand why... (dont even bother me with insanely annoying nams like Steve Vai en Joe Satriani) Peace I don't get this whole "greatest or not greatest guitarist" discussion. First of all, how do you measure greatness? Second, I'd like to tell you a story. A friend of mine plays guitar, and he didn't know a f... about Prince. I told him how good he was on guitar and my friend always made jokes at me (obviously he just knew Prince as "that crazy-dressed pop star"). One day I played "Joy in Repetition" (live from ONA) for him, and he couldn't believe his ears. He said that Prince was really great and could play various styles. On the other hand, he also told me that Prince had technical limits and that someone like Vai was better (technically). My firend has a lot of that "L.A. metal" stuff (Vai, Satriani), so he played some Vai for me. I agreed that Vai was better technically, but also told him that the music was f..king boring as hell!!! That's like Czerny if you want to listen to piano music (piano players know what I mean)! I can't comment on Thompson as I don't know his work (I'm not a guitar expert, to be honest). Conclusion: Prince is excellent on guitar. There may be other great players outside, but what makes Prince really unique is that he is a great guitarist and also good on the piano, the bass, the drums and vocals. And he can write songs! So, who needs that "greatest guitarist" discussion other than ranking freaks? [Edited 2/7/06 11:29am] i totally agree with you. i am having that same discussion with people where i work, and i tell them that prince may not be THEE greatest guitar player in the world (but then NOBODY is) but when you consider the fact that prince has only ever had 1 guitar lesson, taught himself to play piano by ear, not to mention the 20 some other instruments he plays, you have to admit that he racks at the top of the list.....they walk away quietly. noituloveR lautiripS weN a fo gninwaD eht si sihT

KSTRAT BEAUGARDE said U listen to Prince's 1999 and Vanity 6's Drive Me Wild and tell me if there is a difference and then compare them to The Time's 777-9311 Beaugarde, I've listened to all those tracks & albums countless times. I asked are you sure? It's pretty much common knowledge that Prince pretty much performed the tracks on the 1st two time albums. The solo in 777-9311 was dicussed on a few threads here. The general consensus seemed to be that Prince was pretty much copping Jesse stylistically for that track. I've yet to hear another recorded example of Prince playing that way. Besides, weren't the cat's from The Time playing on some of the Vantity 6 sessions as well as providing backing (though concealed) for the live performances? To My ear the lead work on the single the solo in particular does not sound like Prince's playing. Especially the phrasing. If indeed he is playing, he's making an effort to play unlike what was featured on his own stuff at the time, and that may have been his intent. -KSTRAT- [Edited 2/14/06 16:14pm]

Just to broaden your taste, and look outside your 'borders' some other picks:
Nick Drake (best acoustic guitar player, listen to cello song on his cd Five Leaves Left) David Hidalgo - Los Lobos (criminally underrated, listen to Good morning Azlan on the cd with the same name, or to his solo on Just a Man from their masterpiece Kiko) Tom Morello - Rage against the Machine (simply the best funk-rap-rock guitarist in the world, forget his work with Audioslave, thats just shyte)
