Whenever P wanna make $$$...

...he makes a "patchwork" album, have u noticed?

Diamonds & Pearls, Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, Musicology: all were supposed 2 b "come-back" albums (even if it didn't work in the case of "Rave"), & all were albums with many styles mixed, & quite unrelated songs, without real coherance.

Considering how "Te Amo Corazon" & "Black Sweet" just have NOTHING 2 do 2gether (they sound sooo different), it seems that Prince is offering us another "patchwork" album, with no particular unity in the "sound of it."

I ain't saying it's good or bad. Just noticing it. What do u think?

i think most all of his albums are "patchwork" albums. even TRC, stylistically, had a lot going on. the only albums with a solid style that i can think of are the experiments, like "N.E.W.S", "one nite alone" and "the truth".

Quite true, xcept that i'd argue that there's a "sound" 2 TRC, & even sort of a "sound" 2 "D&P" & "Rave"...

But i just couln't identify any particular "color" that would define "Musicology"'s coherance, & i think it might b the same with "3121."

But maybe there's one & i just couldn't "hear" it?

completly disagree!

first of all we've just heard 3 songs of the album - think of sott - an album that is considered as one of its best. when you hear dorothy parker and sott you would never think its on the same album.

second: listen to BS and then to TAC - for my ears they fit together perfectly - i even think that these 2 songs will be on the cd just one behind the other.

third: you know, what makes p really rich is his concerts like the last tour in the states - best selling tour that year with highest income of all artists touring the us!

so, please don't judge an album by 3 of (appr. / hopefully) 13, 14 songs ...

My thoughts exactly! I mentioned this same fact a few days ago here and at Housequake. By the different sounds and styles of the songs we have been presented, this album is building up to being a Sign "O" The Times like album. If 3121 is even half as good as SOTT, it will better than just about everything Prince put out in the mid to late 90's and in the early part of the 2000's. I feel that Prince took the extra time in between Musicology and 3121 to really search himself so that he can give us a quality album. Not only for us, but I think he did it for himself to show that he still can put out the type of music we are used to hearing and to show the major labels that he is still a force and one of the musical fore-front leaders. I think this album is going to something special and I haven't had that feeling since the prince album. I'm really looking forward to this album and I think that it will go down as a classic in the Prince chronicles. Pretty bold statement, but I feel that this time it will be true!

3121 will be a 92's "symbol" like CD.

Where Musicology was D & P.

I think Musicology had a more "sound" to it than Rave did. What about Sign O the Times...that's as patchwork as it gets. TRC was very cohesive in scope and sound...and what'd we get for that? Darth Vader. It's all trade offs. And as we don't know how 3121 sounds yet, it's too early to judge.
