I'm not into all this back and forth minutia. I was referring to the people who starting accusing me of race baiting etc.. But my point which stands. The only real difference from this girl and 99% of Ps other proteges is her complexion and features. Its a non issue. People can qualify their issues however they want but its ridiculous. The fact theres never been this much controversy or people complaining is a witness to the fact.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I know that for me, I'm just over the idea of Prince having protoges. For as much as he can get her name out there, I think he is holding her back. When was the last time a Prince protoge made it big?

I don't see people complaining as much as I see them not getting the hype. And even if they were to complain, aren't they entitled to an opinion, as much as it may differ from yours or anyone else's? Hell, I like Roxette more than the Beatles. I know they aren't better, but I've never claimed my taste was exemplary.

How do you know people are not getting the hype? Were you at either show to see the reaction to her performance? Her album is not even out yet? Don't you think its too early?

Why are you more perplexed on why he is promoting Tamar so hard, moreso than Appolonia, Vanity, Carmen, Mayte, etc?

He's promoting her now, why focus on his past projects.

It is because of his past talentless non-singing projects, why critizing and saying Tamar has no talent that does not make sense. I'm not talking about not liking her performance or music, but to say she has no talent after we have witnessed his past projects just does not make sense.

Yeah I did forget Carmen. Nona was an established artist and a legend's daughter. Cat isnt dark at all. Hes been involved w/ Ananda Lewis, of BET/MTV, Susan from Vanity 6, Patrice Rushen, and several dark brown skinned female musicians but none of it was hyped and they had their own lives and careers apart form him.

confuse I'm still missing your point a bit...if all the women you name above (Lewis, Susan, Patrice??, and even Nona) were already established then why are you using them as comparison to Tamar who is not established? And I don't even what to split hairs with you about shades of darkness (e.g. Nona, Cat, Tamar blahblah)

You know what...forget it...I'm too confused by this whole discussion. Frankly I couldn't care less whether the girl was green with purple polka dots and had one leg...if I like her music I will listen to it. shrug

Youre not missing my point, youre getting it. The light bright/white acts hes dealt w/ were unknowns who he made stars. The chocolate women were independant from him. Tamar is the first chocolate unknown that hes put in the game. And shes the first unknown that this many fans have given so little luv. The only difference between her and them is her features.

Okay...now that you've broken it down like that I understand what you're trying to say, but I still don't agree with your reasoning because:

1. Cat was also a "chocolate" unknown...which I pointed out before & you dismissed saying she wasn't as dark as Tamar. Now I don't know if P hyped Cat as much as Tamar, but read a lot of threads that say they hate Cat's rapping. shrug

2. Skin color is NOT the only difference b/t Tamar & the other "unknowns" (Vanity, Apollonia, Carmen, Jill, Mayte). The difference to me is that Tamar (imo) has a pretty good voice...unlike about 4 out of 5 of those ladies. I guess that is why you think people don't like her b/c to you she does have talent (compared to the other "unknowns"); and therefore why else would people dislike her except b/c of her looks, (right)?

I still don't think any dislike for her has to do with her looks...but that's just my twocents I tend to believe everyone is open minded & fair until they prove to me otherwise...

Because she is beautiful and she can sing. She is not groundbreaking and I am not denying that but she is the best protege that Prince have since Jill Jones. I think with the proper promotion, she is going to do well particularly in the urban or r&B audience.

I fucking love her performance as a backup singer too and she was getting down with the twins.

I do like Beautiful, Love, and Blessed and I am still trying to remind myself it is hers, not a Prince song. It is uplifting and also very positive. Hell her song blows out the crap that it is out there today.

Unlike half of the people on the org, I am going to buy her new album which comes out on May 7th? Or May 2nd? I am spreading the word about her to my peeps on myspace and they are digging her.

I just hope Prince is going to treat this sista right and not end up screwing her like he did with Jill. But it seems like for now he is very exciting about her and also giving her time to shine.

I don't know either how her and Prince connected yet but we are going to surely find out.

I agree with u. I like Tamar and Beautiful Love and Blessed. She got kinda wild with her vocals there at the end on SNL, slipping out of key. But overall, she sounded good. And yeah, you're on target with the best vocals since J.J., although Rosie could blow.

Well, Jill was light skinned and P didn't do shit for her career. J.J. was by far, the best female vocalist P had. If folks don't dig Tamar, then so be it. It's still early in the game for her. Let her album come out, see how it does. Gotta give her time.

I don't see what's so special about her that would warrant spots on SNL with Prince and sharing the bill with him at concerts, not to mention promoting her album along with his; granted I'm basing this on the one performance on SNL and the average Beautiful Love and Blessed song. She is apparently vocally talented, and I really don't like Prince's dime-piece projects, but talent alone has never fully guided decisions on who he has chose to promote. I don't see what's so scandalous about questioning P's motives?

I never heard nothin' about him and Patrice being involved. I know he had a crush on her because he has a thing for (some) female musicians, but I think he just liked her I don't know about them being involved or Ananda Lewis. Susan from Vanity 6, I just read about that the first time in the book Possessed, before then, never heard of the two of them cuz who did claim as his girlfriend: Vanity and the same thing with Nona, she even told it in Essence magazine, he supposedly said he wanted to marry Nona, he must've been on dope when he said that and she had to had been at the time to believe that, cuz who did end up marrying huh? Miss Mayte. He might mess with black women IN THE DARK, but not in the LIGHT.

Just because you're not up on certain Prince info don't make it seem like nobody knew.

It was well known in Prince's camp not to mess with Susan Moonsie because she was Prince's girl. And this was long before Vanity entered the picture. Vanity got pushed to the front because she wanted to be in showbusiness. Susan was only in the group because she was Prince's girl.

There was press about him and Nona dating during that time back in '93 or '94 or however long ago it was. Some of it is even floating around on this very site in the Gallery section under articles. At least two of them, and neither of them are the Essence article Nona did about 3 years ago.

If want to be truthful about it he didn't flaunt his relationship with Susannah Melvoin in the press either.

Well at least he is spending some energy of promoting her and that is more than I can say tham his past proteges talented or not. I am giving Prince some credit for that. And if Tamar wasn't so talented after I been hearing her for awhile then i would be saying thing that she not so special. But still some of yall people needed to give the girl a chance. Her album isn't even out and she haven't perform that many shows. A few people on here had since appreciated her more since the SNL and they were the same ones who dismissed her when they first heard BLB.

It said on Uptown article that Jill's mother was black and her father was Italian. It even mention it in other interviews too. Jill's mother passed away around 1995 because Jill lived in London for many years and she have to go back to New York to take care of her mother during the last year of her life. It seemed like she had it rough in the 90s as I read her interviews due to her couldn't find work in the music industry because of her shady Paisley Park contract among other things. If you see some of her pictures you can tell by her hair that she has some black ancestry. Go use Google and search Jill Jones Prince. you might find some information.

Fauxie

She's attractive, seems to have a nice way about her, a has a good voice.

I think it's also sound business sense since there's a fair chance many of us will buy both albums, and I doubt the cost, time and extra effort needed to make her album was that great considering he was in the studio a lot making his own album. He's pretty much promoting both albums at the same time too.

I don't think those who are claiming she has no talent (and I don't see many on this thread) are frothing at the mouth over his past protoges either.

I'm only speaking about those people on this thread who aren't gaga over her. I only saw her performance on SNL and have heard the song. Although I find both the performance and the song pleasant, I'm not jumping for superlatives. I'm not overly impressed, but she's a new act so I don't have my hopes up too high. I do think it's wayyyyy too early to judge her talent or even her potential at this point. All I am saying is that I'm not uber-excited about her album- nothing mroe, nothing less. It has a lot more to do with her being Prince's protege than it does with her merits as an act. And it has absolutely nothing to do with her skin color.

The following article appeared in issue no. 39 of UPTOWN magazine, and is reproduced here by kind permission of the author, Per Nilsen.

BABY, YOU'RE A TRIP

After meeting Prince on the Dirty Mind tour in 1980, Jill Jones was closely involved in Prince’s work for most of the eighties. They had a close friendship and Prince wrote "She’s always in my Hair" about her in 1984 and he nicknamed her the "white fox." Her self-titled 1987 album has long been considered one of the most impressive releases by all of Prince’s protégés and side projects.

In this article, Per Nilsen trace’s Jill’s background and describes her work with Prince in the eighties. Her acclaimed Jill Jones album is examined in detail and her subsequent career is discussed.

Jill Jones was born in a little town in Ohio between Cincinnati and Dayton to a black mother and an Italian father, who was a jazz drummer. Her mother as a fashion model and worked all over the world. "When I wanted to spend time with my mother, I had to travel with her to London, New York, L.A., and Madrid. It was impossible to spend any length of time together because she was always travelling."

Jill was raised primarily by her grandparents until her mother’s second marriage took the family to Los Angeles where they settled down. At the age of 17, she left home to pursue her dream of becoming a professional songwriter and singer. One of her first jobs was as a backing singer for Teena Marie, who was managed by her mother. Marie was the opening act for Prince on the 1980 Dirty Mind tour.

"It was a real interesting time to meet Prince, because he was wearing those little bikini pants and boots," Jill remembers. "I just went, ‘Oh, my goodness.’" She found him "a little arrogant ‘ cause he was say." Whereas "all the other girls pretty much wanted him," she kept her distance. "That’s probably why he found me interesting. It’s scary when you meet someone who’s a lot like you, who’s very naive and a bit of a spoiled brat, to be perfectly honest."

Welp, that clears that mystery/debate up, don't it? But I wonder why she would relate to herself a White Fox though?..Unless she associated herself with being white. Thanx for the clarification, PC.

Like the other poster said Prince was the one who gave her that nickname so therefore only Prince knows the answer.

Yeah but SHE didn't have to keep using it after he gave it to her. That was her choice.

well,i think its a cool nick name and maybe she did 2...i dont think she was trying 2 put herself w/one race.If she wanted 2 do that, she just wouldnt claim herself as being biracial at all.

I agreed too. Maybe Jill thought it was cute name and that has nothing to do with her want to be white. Yes she does look very light-skinned and that probably the reason why Prince gave her that name, I don't know. Anyway the first time I seen her which was Purple Rain I know she wasn't a pure white woman I knew she was mixed with something. As a matter of fact when I read a couple interviews of her, she always acknowledged and seem proud of being biracial.

The sun came out on Saturday Night, that didnt make it alright, and as you can see, alotta folx are still upset. Ananda couldnt stop doing interviews re: how he played her for the longest.

You lost me where did the sun come out at on SNL. Just because a man hugs a woman doesn't mean they are screwing. Plus Prince is still officially married until he and Mani official say they are divorced which means he is NOT on the market. I already know he could be unfaithful just like any other man, but I don't believe it would be with Tamar, Celestina or any black woman. It would be with his "typical" lady and I don't know what you mean about Ananda. What chu mean about he played her for the longest?

I don't care what you say, he has a preference with his women and he also has that right whether we like it or not.
