Since everyone else is speculating I might as well throw my two cents in. I honestly think this may have more to do with Prince rehabilitating his image as a producer of other artists than it has to do with anything sexual. First of all, he bucked the trend by choosing someone who actually can sing and perform (at least in some people’s opinion). Second, she has to sell, so that’s probably why we’re seeing this seemingly unprecedented push. It’s long been a saying in the industry that if you sign on as a Prince protege your career is going to disappear into a black hole. Prince may be trying to change all that. If you don’t want to believe Prince is doing this for altruistic reasons, it may be more about his ego than his libido. Seeing all the neo-soul artists inspired, at least in part, by his legacy may have inspired Prince to see what he could come up with for that format. The people who claim to “know” Prince is sleeping with Tamar may well be right, but they also might be wrong too, and I wouldn’t call anyone who doesn’t subscribe to that idea a fool either. It may also be within the realm of possibility that Prince has learned (at least somewhat) from his past mistakes and will do things differently this time. Maybe for the sake of his ego if nothing else.

Maybe I'm being naive, but I agree with you about the non-sexual thing. He seems to have been interested in her for quite sometime (since the 90s) and the fact that he kept calling her his baby sis at Nokia would make it pretty creepy if they were hittin' it. (And yes, I know about the lyrics to Sister.) And the way he hugged her after their duet on SNL seemed fairly innocuous. If she is able to be successful, it could only help Prince's legacy, right?

It does surprise me a bit that she doesn't appear to play any instruments (other than a tambourine), given how Prince is always championing "real musicians," but maybe he's considering someone with a good voice a real musician.

Just because you obviously judge someone's vocal skills on their skin colour (been away for 3 weeks and stupidity is still here I see...) doesn't mean people with a brain do...

My assessment:

She's pretty, can sing and have big legs - what more could you want? But she needs some vocal training. She's got skills, but they need to be honed, she sings too wild, loud and sloppy in some areas. That's my only criticism. I find it interesting after the finesse of Rosie Gaines and Tevin Cambell that he is focusing on her because in all reality, there is nothing super special about her - and I don't say that to be hatin', there are other Black soul singers out there that have way better voices than her, even if I find their music totally boring. But knowing Prince's history with protege's and backing bands, we can only see how long she lasts.

I have to say I'm pleased with the direction Prince's music is taking.

Prince led me to this chick. After seeing her @ the Fillmore I'd listen to her sing by herself without P in the house. She's got a great voice & as long as she's singing a good song I'm wit it cool

love them big ole legs. it's refreshing to see him in that role, the hug on SNL was cool in a big brother/mentor sort of way. It's good to see your hero's age gracefully, enjoy true mentorship, let mick jagger be a clown and continue to knock up chicks young enough to be his grandkid LOL, that's not good enough for a true artist like prince even if he can hit it.

now i will say this (as a brown skinned brotha) i would have been more amped had he been responsible for nikka costa based on her skill set. her alternative genre and skill set is more ..."princelike" although her skin tone would ruffle alot of sensitive feathers relating to his preported tendency towards 7ups and white chicks.kind of like in sports if it were rumored that MJ was a mentor for a player you would tend to think of Kobe or guys with similair size and style.

If you don't see the racism in the comments about this dark-skinned woman you need to wake up. I think we all judge vocal skill on vocal skill. A lot of P's
lady singers do not have vocal skill.

oops, i wasnt referring only to you wink , i have seen quite a few people make such a suggestion, that is why i had posted that. i posted info on her at the npgmc, but i cant get in right now, they seem to be having site issues. when i can access it i will repost it here. i dont the exact date information was provided, but i believe it was some time back, but she said she was learning guitar at the time, she may not be extremely proficient in it, who knows until she shows us what all she has cool

really surprised that some people think she needs vocal training. i thought her voice was beautiful. she has been singing since the age of 3, and she is 25/26 (thereabouts) years old.

Trickology

I suggest you listen to clips of her former band

http://www.angazamusic.com/

And the girl has ability to hold a note and be able to phrase. Is Prince coaching her to sing a bad thing? Probably because she is ending up to sing like Nona Gaye and Mayte.

wink If he produced all of "Beautiful and Blessed" Prince is gonna tank this debut.

Repeat after me:
sentence structure
sentence structure
sentence structure

Neither one of your sentences is complete or makes sense.
The first one is incomplete & has no point and your second sentence can't decide if it is a question or a statement.
Here I will correct them for you so you can see your errors:
You all are hating on Tamar because she is good & the girl has talent.
Tell me - if Tamar was a lighter skin black female or white would you like her more?

Even as I watched those dance moves the girls did on SNL; It was obvious they were totally Prince's idea.

That was only weak part of great performance on saturday.

Prince has never before done so much to push a protege: Concerts, media and what...an appearance on SNL before her album has dropped? Her voice isn't top shelf, she's pretty, but come on.Prince gotta be hittin that.

He's pushing her big time. She's ok.

If P TRULY wanted to hype a singer/performer, then he should've gone after LEDISI. THAT chick has the pipes and the energy and the showmanship that P would DEFINITELY cater to and should! Tamar's average. Us R&B folk know "average" when we hear and see it. Some of y'all who aren't that "up on thangs" in the soul world think Tamar is the best thing since bald pussy.

Then he coulda gone and fucked with the WB plantation and nabbed LEELA JAMES, who's also a superior vocalist to Tamar. Leela be sangin' that "Down home, 'Retha Franklin, grits, collard greens, and cornbread, all washed down with some extra sweet lemonade from a Mason jar" Soul!

Ledisi, I'm down with. I absolutely love her. Leela....I don't know. I kinda had an expectation on her based on reviews and it just didn't match. She seems kinda all over the place to me. Maybe I need to revisit the album.... smile

Has anyone here thought that maybe, just maybe, Prince may be working with Tamar because she is a decent singer/songwriter and he enjoys collaborating with her? We haven't heard her entire album yet, so perhaps the simple yet obvious answer may be all there is to it.
