that because for whatever reason you don't think Beyonce is talented when clearly she is. Regardless of how you feel about the kinds of songs she sings. She can blow and is a very strong live performer dancer. Makes a good combination. Not everyone can be a Prince and play and write all their music.

The dissing of her is ridiculous because shes clearly very talented in addition to being fine as hell and easy on the eyes.

Maybe she's technically talented, but I hate her voice, her songs and her looks.

I hate to say this, but performances in public like that second one last night with Tamar are why I spend so much time defending Prince to my friends that don't "get it"...

I am awaiting the onslaught once everyone gets back into the swing of things tomorrow. I had no idea who Tamar was until last night, and I really hope that perfromance was just a bad example of what she has to offer.

Prince rocked, don't get me wrong, but we could have done without BLB last night... I was expecting more, considering he is getting ready to release...

Same here. Tamar wasn't the fuckin' guest...

I mean, it's gracious and all of Prince to share the spotlight, but nobody tuned in for Tamar, decent song or not.

if you have to defend Prince due to that performance, your friends have absolutely no musical taste, and you shouldn't waste your valuable time. Like Tamar or not, to be onstage with Prince is, I'm sure, no easy task. She held her own, she looked confident, sounded great, and was having fun. I'm not sure how she will do in the mainstream, but damn, given what you're offered by The Man these days, this should be a fairly easy choice. I know people that hate Prince who thought that both songs were awesome, and was absolutely the best performance they have see in a great while. The thought Tamar was great, especially given the reason I stated. I mean, there aren't many people that can be onstage with Prince and command the attention of the audience.

Why do people hate when he gives up the mike for new talent? This is very confusing.

My prediction? This is going to give 3121 a boost like nothing else. Prince came out and rocked as easily as if you or I would pick our noses.

He can give up the mic and it can be cool.

Check the NAACP performance. Now THAT was a performance, on many levels.

We're all entitled to our own opinions, but those of you acting like SNL was some kind of seminal, groundbreaking performance for Prince are drinking too much Purple Kook Aid. smile

It was OK. But he's done much better, very often.

You know just cuz someone isn't gushing about that performance doesn't mean that person is not a fan. In fact, it's more like the opposite. Some of us fans have seen him rip the roof off and I guess now we expect that every time.

I know it's not very fair smile

I was checking out the forums on aintitcoolnews about snl and most of the comments about prince were pretty awesome !!

here are a few:

I don't care who you are, Prince rocked that motherfucker

This Prince song is pretty kickass. - First time I've liked a musical guest without knowing what was coming.

Whos!! Prince is fucking wailing on that guitar!!

    Prince just owned your ass

I don't care who you are, Prince rocked that motherfucker

That was THE BEST Prince song I've ever heard. That was a great guitar lead the entire song. I want to watch that performance again and again. Oh, and this episode of SNL really sucks otherwise.

Guess what? Prince is still the shit! - He puts out an album's worth of stuff like the first song tonight (I'm assuming it's called "Fury"), and I'll go grab that thing and put it right next to Purple Rain in the CD collection. Gads, but the man can shred a guitar...and he makes it look so goddamn easy.

Damn, Prince can shred. - I fancy myself a fair guitar player but I suck ass next to that tiny little bastard. Prince is the Man. Oh the rest of the show sucked, as usual.

Thank god for fucking Tivo! PRINCE!!!!! - His songwriting prowess hasn't diminished. The taste of the audience has, and, he has decided to occassionally pander to that. But, when he's on - any concert or any of the millions of unreleased jams he diddles with just for his own enjoyment - no one - NO FUCKING ONE - can measure up to Prince. Prince, Joni Mitchell, Pete Townshend. That's it. Period. Shut up about it. "Let's fall in love, get married, have a baby. We'll call him Nate. If it's a boy." Oh, fuck Saturday Night Love. Waste of time.

now the real question is how many of these guys are already prince fans just hyping this thing !! biggrin

From reading all of the positive comments around the web about Fury, it looks like this could be a massive hit for the man. But talk about poor timing! The current single is "Black Sweat"!

So will Universal rush out a record of "Fury" to capitalize on this tremendous buzz? Prince has released two singles at a time before ("So Far, So Pleased" and "Hot Wit U"), but has he ever had three?

Nobody is talking about "Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed", which I think has a wonderful melody and every bit as strong a song... but it doesn't jump up and slap you in the face like "Fury" does, and that is what is needed to succeed on the Pop charts.

And this nonsense that it's not a "Prince" song just because he has a co-vocalist... please. I understand the fan sentimentality, but if you are really interested in the *music*, then in BL&B Prince choose a female voice as as one of the intruments (just like "Everywhere"). Don't like it? Fine, but it's still a Prince song. Personally, I think it's gorgeoous - much stronger material than "Black Sweat" (which I suspect will sound dated in 5 years time). Of course, I'm an old fart, what do I know. finger3

I'm with the general consensus on the performances and the songs.
So, I'll just add that
for myself,
I was glad that Prince chose to play a song with strong guitar work.
And while the majority of the public are aware of his guitar powess,
it always still felt under-rated.
Performances like this ( & like the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame) is a great way to remind 'em of something we fans never forget.

One more full quote from the ain'titcool-board because it's so hilarious:

Prince is just a badass pimp mother fucker. That's it. HE MADE THE GUITAR PLAY ITSELF!! He's such a badass that I'm not even disappointed he didn't appear in his own sketch. I just figure it's part of his master pimp plan. If he had gone into "1999" after the last song I would've came right there on the spot, swear to god. Prince owns my ass and yours. That is all.

people on the net talking about Fury like it is the best song they ever heard of in 20 years. More than half even thinks thats how his new album is going to be, but they are heading for a some let down because it seems like it is not especially after hearing Te Amo and Black Sweat. The same people who likes Fury has no idea that Te AMO was released much less saw Black Sweat on MTV or VH1 last week.

See Prince that's you forget for trying to please everyone. biggrin

- Well, Beyonce is surely talented, but it wasn´t vainandy´s point.
Prince spent the last years complaining about the plastic music that was on radio (ONA tour was kind of a response - ´real music by real musicians´). And Beyonce is part of this music scene. Ok, she doesn´t write...but she records very plastic R&B...that´s why it seemed strange and contradictory. But their performance was indeed good.

My favorite coment over at the "aint it cool" message board.

"you know, it's a really fuckin' sad comment on the state of pop culture when a 65 year olde glam rock rnb singer demonstrates that he is still more talented, vibrant, and interesting than yer average 20 year old rocker. i weep for the youth of today; you just can't possibly get any lamer."

- Nice quote, but at the same time it´s nobody´s fault...it´s Prince who is extremely talented and young for his age.

But I have to agree...today´s rockers arent interesting, with rare exceptions

I was surprised to hear Donnie Simpson say the exact same thing. He just dogged the "Fury" performance on the radio. Then again Donnie likes Mary J. Blige's off key singing performances. Come to think of it he doesn't like anything remotely pop music anymore it seems. neutral

FURY ROCKS!!!!!

sad
Maybe I watched a different show than Ya'll did.. but I was
NOT impressed.. I have been following Prince almost every since he came out
back in 79... and I have NEVER really heard his voice sound the way
it did.. especially during Fury..
It just had a "different" sound to it. Maybe he was a bit tired from
all those shows on Thursday and Friday.. but he seemed rather Bored to me!
He looked GREAT.. that I will give you.. but seeing those women on stage
just made me miss the Sexy Mayte even more... They distracted from
the performance.. I THOUGHT
After The first Single.. I was totally excited for the new CD to come
out.. but after hearing "Fury" and "Black Sweat" I am alittle less
thrilled.
I am taking it that the last song he did on SNL will be on the girls
new CD???
I was SO pumped for a KICK ASS Prince performance.. but OH WELL.
This kinda reminds me of when he was with Larry G. all the time....
You just were not happy about someone else getting some lime lite.
Just MY opinion.. and I am SURE that most of you will disagree.. but just
wanted to have MY say
Peace.. wink

Unfortunately, I have to agree. The first performance reek of a Diamonds and Pearls look with the doorag (or whatever he calls it in his own language) and sound. I kept saying....this is cool he is on Saturday night live....but I am waiting for him to wake up. It kinda of dragged. All old sounding stuff. Certainly had the "Prince" signature....but sounded dated. The song Musicology was way better than the songs he performed here. More true to himself. These songs only sound like Prince trying to be commercial and do what he thinks people want him to do. Musicology may have been in a similar vein, however he hit it with his willingness to be daring. One of the reasons I use to like Prince was because the way he would take risks. I know we all get old....but when you have a chance to shine...you need to shine as bright as you can.

The word...tired kept entering my mind as I watched. And here I was watching it with my 17 year old step daughter thinking should would think Prince was cool after watching it....of course she was not impressed. Can't blame her.

But rock on Prince. Your a great artist. Just take some viagra before your performances.

...and it's one of the songs off the new album "3121", to be released on Universal Records in March. Two other songs have gotten a bit of press: "Black Sweat" (which--the rumor goes--he was supposed to play on SNL but substituted Fury) and "Te Amo Corazon" (which even some diehard fans are saying is good only as a sleeping aid). Guy's 47, can you believe it? I'm sure his lovely missus has a little something to do with keeping him young; she definitely has a Vanity vibe going on
