Lord's Prayer in Controversy?

I was just listening to Controversy, and the part where he says the Lord's Prayer, (Our, Father...), made me curious. Why is it there? Does it have to do with the part of the song when he asks "Do I believe in God?"

God speaks to him.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

Sorry, but that confused me for some reason. He's saying that God speaks to him in the song?

Prince talks with god. It's a regular them in his music and his public appearences like interviews. That is why he has that "lords prayer" in the song.

I don't know that it is acutally in there because I never listened to that song.

Maybe it's in this song because the song is about people saying and wondering these things about him, making false accusations, etc. So he includes The Lord's Prayer which is fitting when you think about it.

Thanks for the link. I will watch it now. I had heard the song on the radio before I really got into prince's music. However, as I keep telling everyone, I am not a prince fan. Some souls just travel along simular paths, and prince is crossed my path several times.

"Do I believe in god.
Do I believe in me..."

Lets examine this statement to it's finest point. I believe in Prince and I believe he is saying that believing in god is likened to a belief in himself. Meaning, surely Prince realizes Prince exists, thus he knows god exists. Moreover...

The two are linked as one.

I could have been offended by it, but I chose not to let it bother me. [Does that make sense?]

The Lord's Prayer represents spirituality and it's a universal prayer which is representitive of the song.

Prince is asking us to think about what is important in our lives. Other peoples perceptions of us, or our own.

At this time there seemed to be a huge spiritual side to Prince's music almost as if he is re-affirming his own belief in himself.

It's hard NOT to be affected by what other people say. The media, gossip, speculation, etc...

The Lords Prayer serves as a spiritual reminder that there are greater things out there other than the colour of your skin or your sexuality. Does it really matter if you're gay or straight, black or white. It's about having self belief whoever you are. That's why it's such a universal song.
Shut up already, damn.

Many can only guess but during that time the Fcc would not let you say
certian words on the radio. For example "God" unless it was a christian song.
So maybe he decided to see if they would notice a whole prayer in a song.
Oh by the way you could be fined for holding your crouch during the 80's there was the Tipper Gore thing. Remember Al Gores wives campaign for decency or censorship or something like that....
sorry if that was over your head...jump up and try to catch the point next time.

Is that a joke?

You could be a "religion expert", but this doesn't mean you know shit about god.

He put the Lord's Prayer in there cuz he ran out of lyrics and he wanted to make ths song as long as possible ,,,just like the "people call me rude, I wish we all were nude" chant he does....takes up space....
WHo cares anyway...just jam wit it! peace.

OK, I will let you all know, for those who don't, why Prince used the Lord's prayer in "Controversy."

"Controversy" is a song that introduces Prince to the masses as a sex-driven rock-funkateer. This is shown through his use of leggings and underwear with an over coat during that period. To make the effect of his rebel sex style rub in, he included the prayer as if he was in temptation, but really couldn't stop his rebel ways.

There was a time that was Prince was pure funk. This is one of his funkiest moments.

I think the reason he did it was simply becuase it sounds fuckin cool. And it does in itself still sound quite 'controversial' to have 'the lords prayer' read out by an an androgynous pop star during a dance song.
"London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"

"YEAH!!!"

"Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"
