I went in that theater a mere whisp of a boy aged 14, and after that hand-jivin' love scene, came out ALL man tease

I got to see the movie twice on the big screen, and it's a completely different experience than seeing it on the small screen - if you ever get the chance to do so, GO!

I'm surprised I never wore out my video copy of it, I didn't even have a VCR, and would carry it around with me in the vain hope I may get to watch it again lol

I also managed to get a quad poster from the cinema when the film run finished, but it got stolen - I'd love to get my hands on another British quad poster of that bearing the legend: 'Before he made the music, he lived it' or something.

Japanese poster for 'Purple Rain' (1984)

Same here. Like VainAndy, I remember the Premiere. I had just gotten over Michael Jackson fever. My favorite song at the time was Billie Jean when on MTV some strange video called "When Doves Cry" came out.

Oh no!!! Prince??? The 1999 guy? The Little Red Corvette dude? Wait. Wasn't he like, gay, or something? I remembered he had some hit years before with "I Wanna Be Your Lover" but damn, he was no Michael Jackson.

Wait. Look at the video. Wow, that song sounds different from everything on the radio. Holy S*t! It sounds pretty cool! He's on a motorycle...oh wow, he's actually with a good looking woman! Love the clothes! Great outfits and inventive video...Maybe I'll check out the movie.

Saw the movie. It was...ground-shaking. The opening with Let's Go Crazy, the dissonant piano made me cringe my face. Oh. That wasn't nice sounding. The final electric guitar solo! Oh wow! Who know electric guitar could be so funky? Ain't that the instrument for white rockers who can't sing??

Hey, Morris Day's on screen. What an ass. Well, he's kinda funny. Whoa! Apollonia? What happened to Vanity? Who cares, this chick looks hot! She's what? In the lake? Topless? Hmmmm.... this Prince cat is just a little dangerous. This ain't no Disney film.

Morris is trying to take Apollonia away from Prince? Hahahaha, good luck, loser. The Beautiful Ones.... OH MY. Prince is a genius! Wow, wow, wow! He can play keyboards too??? That scream! OH that scream! From the depths of his soul, he wants his woman! Wow.

The love scene. He's kissing her. Wait! Where is his hand sliding to? OH S*T! Umm, I wonder how my girlfriend is digging this? I'm kinda embarrassed. Wow. Umm. Well... NICE!

How about that motorcyle?

Morris and Jerome are hilarious! Hahahaha, the password is What?

Apollonia is cute, but I'm in love with Wendy. I love you, Wendy!!! Is the water warm enough? Not for me!!! Come make it warmer! Wow, Prince is now pretending his girls are into each other and he's in the middle...a little Prince sandwich. Nice guitar interlude--it sounds different from the rest of the song. Wow.

Hey! How does one go about masturbating with a magazine? Is she looking at the pictures or is she using the magazine in other ways???? In the hotel lobby???? ( those will be some nasty paper cuts...)

Oh this is one rude boy! But his body is chiseled. He's moving with his guitar in ways I've never seen. He's like Bruce Lee-- a master of what he's doing, completely in charge.

Wait. He can play acoustic piano too? Oh. My. God. I've never heard such a rich sound come out of an instrument. Mmmmmm, I love Prince! Michael who??

Very funny, Morris. How's the family? Ha. Dick. Hey, even you realize you were wrong. Cool...You're not a total tool.

Purple Rain. What? What the hell is he singing about? The freaks in the audience are digging it. Where's Dracula to introduce them again? Maybe he went off to be be a Modernaire.
----

At movie's end, my life was changed completely. The beginning of the obsession. Countless hours singing and dancing and countless dates and dances and romantic dinners.... Any dogs in the house? Bought all the albums. (Then had to buy all the CD's.) It was magical. It was heaven.

It will never be the same again. Bruce, Lionel, Hall and Oates, Madonna, everyone else trying to bite off the musical genius, Amadeus Mozart vibe, but this Prince guy was special. I learned that I didn't have to like prepackaged, homogenized music, and that it was okay to take risks and chances in life. Learned the Art of Seduction by listening to Prince. "May I Have This Dance?"

It's been a wild ride. 2004, RRHF. Club Black. Webster Hall. Minneapolis. First Avenue. Grove Music. Paisley Park. Chanhassen. St. Paul. Concert. Afterparty.

Music. A life filled with music.

And through the years, no wondering about what could have beens or what should have beens. The brother took us all on a musical journey, cemented his place in Rock and Roll history, outlived many of his critics and competitors and reemerged as the Genius and not the eccentric others thought he was. New Generations of musicians and fans are waking up to the enormous debt they owe him. This difficult, obstinate, prickly, self-centered Musical God to whom we owe so much has graced us with his talent and steadfastly never allowed us to see his inner life, except through his music.

He will live forever. How many birthdays have you had? One. Time is a trick. He is immortal...

I was 12 but not allowed to go into town to see the film. I got the album as soon as I could{I always had to wait until I had birthday money to spend} and I remember sitting in my bedroom absolutely drooling over the pictures on the record sleeves. I even had a little purple notebook where I used to write poems for Prince, completely believing that one day he would read them.I didn't get to see the film until I was 14,I went to stay at my much older brother's house and he asked me if I wanted to rent a film so I chose Purple Rain,we found it to buy on ex-rental and I still have it today. It was so worth waiting 2 years for that movie, I remember everything about that night;what I ate, what was said, everything, like it was yesterday.
I do envy all of you who got to see it on release on the big screen,I wish I had those memories. I do agree that this era was a unique time, I have such fond nostalgia for that time, sometimes more of an ache. The current 80's revival is really bugging me,all these young kids thinking they've invented it all. To me,Purple Rain defined that moment in time and still stands up today. I was the only kid into Prince in my area (not much has changed!} everyone else was into bland pop and they all thought I was some kind of freak, I intend to be that freak for a long time yet, that's the legacy of Prince.
Time is a trick....

I was 12, and not allowed to go see it. Finally saw it on video the next year when my aunt rented it for me.

Oddly enough, my sister who was 9 at the time got the Purple Rain tape for Christmas that year, and I got Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA!!! mad

It was July of 1984. I was 17 and getting ready for my senior year in high school (84-85). I remember when the radio first played the lead single, "When Doves Cry", for the first time. I loved the song from the first listen. I especially loved the two sections of the song with the screams. Then the album came out and it was great.

I remember all the hype before the movie was released. The premier of the movie in Hollywood was earlier than the movie premiered for the rest of the nation. I remember watching the footage of Prince getting out of the purple limo and walking down the red carpet with Big Chick and the other bodyguards. A local DJ in my area also conducted a phone interview with Morris Day on the evening of the premier. I used to have it on a cassette tape. You know how cassettes wear out over the years. lol

I went to the theater on opening night and it was sold out. I remember coming back two or three more nights and it was sold out every night. The first time I got to see it was by going to an afternoon matinee. My mother came home at lunch and dropped me off at the theater. I watched it and sat through it a second time until she got off of work and picked me up. I wonder can you sit through a movie twice in this present day and time. Probably not. lol

School started in September and Prince mania was everywhere. It was strange to see preppy white kids and pop radio all into Prince because, with the exception of "Little Red Corvette", he had been well known strictly on black R&B radio. I even saw some hardcore rednecks at school (some of my worst enemies) into Prince. I could just imagine trailers rockin'. It was like being in The Twilight Zone.

My whole senior year was loads of fun and the music of "Purple Rain" was a big part of it. Everyone partied all year long until about a month or two before graduation when "Around The World In A Day" came out. Everyone rushed to buy it (without hearing it first). The feeling that everyone got was that Prince had turned on the lights and declared that the party was over. It was great fun while it lasted though. You would have to have lived through it to fully experience the era.

I agree that U had 2 B there to experience the beauty of it all wink .
