I was 9 when it came out. I remember hearing the High School kids on my school bus talk about seeing it, one girl said she cried at the end. No way I could of seen it--there was no movie theater in my town & my parents would have never taken my brother and me to a rated R movie. no no no!

I probably first saw it in the early 2000s, and I'm going to see it on the silver screen this Saturday in Brooklyn! woot!

I was 11 and she was 9.

I remember how wonderfully strange it was to finally hear Prince speak lol

After the movie I persuaded him to take me to the record shop and buy me the Purple Rain cassette.
Then, just before checking out, I asked him if he would get me "the one with 'Little Red Corvette' on it, too?"

Thanks, nurse,

I was 17 and VERY sheltered. I liked Prince...but went to se PR at a theater on an Air Force Base because I had nothing better to do (isolated base). I'd devoured 1999 But hadn't really given a thought to how he looked.

Then I saw PR...heard him speak...saw him move...saw the "Darlin Nikki" scene...and there was NO GOIN' BACK! lol

lol Just remembered...my friends and I drove those in the theater NUTS because we sang along with the songs....LOUD! falloff

I was 8, and I remember my brother (10) told me about this dude who is like Michael Jackson but dresses in purple Clothes. I wasnt interested, I only listened to Culture Club and a song called Holiday by someone called Madonna.
I only listened to him when Raspberry Beret came out next year, and only watched Purple Rain in 1992 when I was 16 and it was on TV, by that stage I was hooked on Prince.
17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

I was 5. I became a fan when I saw When Doves Cry play over and over again on MTV. I asked Mom if we could go see the film when it came out, even though I knew the odds were against me because it was rated R. Of course she said no. I didn't see it until I was 9 when I was in Florida with my Uncle and his family. He was and still is a Prince fan and he let me see it. I was blown away by it and a month or 2 later, Mom got the album (actually it was a my first CD) for me. It's still one of my favorite movies. It always brings back great memories.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

...I was 17, fresh out of high school and on my way to my first hitch in the Army....we stood on line for 3 hours to get into the midnite show at the Joy Theater on Canal Street in New Orleans....

...silly question, but how many of y'all had the purple wax....the 12 inch of When Doves Cry? I try to tell my kids about stuff like this, but its lost on them....though my 13 yr old daughter is seriously diggin on his early stuff...I monitor it a bit cuz she don't need to be singin Head or some of his more colorful classics yet...but at least I know that for another generation in my house, the music lives on....

...and to him, Thanx for the SST...my hometown needs it in so many ways...there will be a Brand New Orleans....

I was 17 and still in high school here in DC. It was a great time for music and to just be young. I had been anticipating the release of the movie for months having known that it had been made. Controversy and 1999 were still getting me by but I was really hungry for new music.

On the week-ends I would work at the Washington Post putting in the insert packages into the Sunday edition. I knew that the first single was going to drop any day so I'd bring a walkman with me hoping to catch it, although I had no idea of what I should be listening for. One day I had been listening all morning and into the afternoon to no avail. Suddenly out of no where came this electric guitar riff and I simply froze where I was. I can't really describe what I felt at the time but it was crazy and new. My heart actually started racing. I said to myself, "this is it. This is Prince." I glanced over at my supervisor, pointed to the bathroom and excused myself to obsorb this wonderful new experience in the peace that it deserved. Remarkably, When Doves Cry fulfilled all of the promise and expectation that I had for the single and that was alot of expectation. I wish that I could say that still happens.

It's one of my favorite memories in life. I couldn't possibly forget it. lol

It was July of 1984. I was 17 and getting ready for my senior year in high school (84-85). I remember when the radio first played the lead single, "When Doves Cry", for the first time. I loved the song from the first listen. I especially loved the two sections of the song with the screams. Then the album came out and it was great.

I remember all the hype before the movie was released. The premier of the movie in Hollywood was earlier than the movie premiered for the rest of the nation. I remember watching the footage of Prince getting out of the purple limo and walking down the red carpet with Big Chick and the other bodyguards. A local DJ in my area also conducted a phone interview with Morris Day on the evening of the premier. I used to have it on a cassette tape. You know how cassettes wear out over the years. lol

I went to the theater on opening night and it was sold out. I remember coming back two or three more nights and it was sold out every night. The first time I got to see it was by going to an afternoon matinee. My mother came home at lunch and dropped me off at the theater. I watched it and sat through it a second time until she got off of work and picked me up. I wonder can you sit through a movie twice in this present day and time. Probably not. lol

School started in September and Prince mania was everywhere. It was strange to see preppy white kids and pop radio all into Prince because, with the exception of "Little Red Corvette", he had been well known strictly on black R&B radio. I even saw some hardcore rednecks at school (some of my worst enemies) into Prince. I could just imagine trailers rockin'. It was like being in The Twilight Zone.

My whole senior year was loads of fun and the music of "Purple Rain" was a big part of it. Everyone partied all year long until about a month or two before graduation when "Around The World In A Day" came out. Everyone rushed to buy it (without hearing it first). The feeling that everyone got was that Prince had turned on the lights and declared that the party was over. It was great fun while it lasted though. You would have to have lived through it to fully experience the era.
