Before I respond to this i would first have to say that people should or would probably be better served by prefencing this within "Genre". IMHO its hard to compare a rock player to a jazz player or metal or whatever, but anyway... My personal favs are 1. Jimmy Bruno he has outstanding technique the best in jazz 2. George Benson 3. Stanly Jordon 4. Randy Rhodes 5. Jimmy Hendrix 6. Eddie hazel 7. Greg Williams(the guitarist i work with) 8. Andre Segovia 9. BB king 10. zakk wylde Will add more later.... JV' WOW!How could I forget about George Benson. He is one of the great one's. I never thought that this thread would become as unique as this. Thanks Orgers .

Sure he's sloppy, his vibrato is not well controlled and he probably doesn't know a bunch of scales but he plays with passion and, most importantly, I like the notes he chooses to play. I know that for some people technique is all there is to music but to me its just a tool to get your ideas heard. If you've got no ideas then all the technique in the world don't mean shit (Note: I'm not saying that applies to Stanley Jordan). What you said is a question of taste not technique... When we are talking about the greatest guitar player of all time, we are saying who's the best technically, the one who revolutionized and redefined the way of play and influenced the most ??? Of course Prince is nowhere near the very best guitar players, but he's blatantly underrated... But what pissed me off with Prince fans is the way they always take it bad when some people say he's not the best guitarist... Prince can play with passion, with his heart etc, that's great, but he IS NOT THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYER... A lot of guitarists are way better technically... I don't judge a guitar player just because he plays with "passion"... It's not objective at all... sorry [Edited 2/8/06 12:46pm] Well likewise, neither is technicality alone. The best guitar players have a combination of great harmonic knowledge, dexterity and pure talent. Prince is AMONG the greatest players in that he has these skills (and it's important to hear some of the unreleased stuff before ruling this out), but there are certainly those who are perhaps more far-reaching with these things.

heres an intersting link.
http://guitar.about.com/l...atesth.htm top 100 guitar solos Prince is in there with Little Red Corvette but i had always thought that it Dez that was playing guitar on that track. anyone? Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I have no idea who the "greatest guitar player of all-time" is, because it's something no one is ever going to agree on anyway. If a guitarist moves you, then I guess they will always be the best in your own eyes (and ears ). Or at least a favorite anyway.
But I'm just astounded though that people still can't seem spell Jimi Henrix's name correctly after all these years. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

Second 2 Jimi? I say Yes. The problem is Prince just doesn't play guitar enough on his albums so people forget and don't really think of him as a guitarist like they should. Then they see him on Sat. Night Live and there shocked! Goodnight, sweet Prince.

One guitar player who's name I don't think has come up is Robert Randolph. This cat plays a mean Steel Guitar. Prince himself has given this dude props. Did any of you see him on last years Vh1 Save The Music Benefit? He and Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 did "Voodoo Child" and Randolph Tore it up! He had everyone in the place on their feet? and he's a young cat too. (He appears to be under 30). Look out for this brother.

Instead of a thread querying Princes Greatness on guitar perhaps we should start a thread and list our favourite Guitarists so that other people can listen to these artists??
Just a thought.....Could be interesting - More so as there are Guitarists named here that I had indeed forgotten about over time !!!

Has anybody mentioned Tuck Andress? Always one of my favorites.
He often plays with his wife Patti (Tuck & Patti) but he has a solo album called "Reckless Precision" which is amazing. Particularly his unrecognizable take on "Louie Louie" "What a lovely fat beat with a zompige baslijn"

prince chose to be PRINCE and not a virtuoso guitarist,
if only he practised 9 hours a day with the guitar as steve vai or so many others he woulda been way better with the guitar than what he is today. jimi also played bass and maybe other instruments but on his records he always had a band backing him up. jimi was a guitarist. prince is not. prince "just" plays other instruments, produces, used to dance a lot, makes videos...etc [Edited 2/14/06 3:51am] One minute you're bleeding. The next minute you're hemorrhaging. The next minute you're painting the Mona Lisa
