Dez's "Modernaire" is there a studio version of this?
not that looped mess that was on the p2p programs... I heard Dez released some double album at the end of last year including "Modernaire" because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Modernaire is still out there?

i found some info on it... they said that "Modernaire" was taken from a tape Dez had and not from the master. i am not sure who owns the master or the publishing rights and the set seems more like a bootleg than official

i would order with caution... the news page is OLD it says Dez is going to be on Vh1's True Spin.. aboput 1999.. which they nixed when Prince refused to let them use any music or clips.
Meaning: they may not even be paying any attention to the site and ordered paid for my net be filled any time soon if ever. [Edited 1/19/06 11:57am]

I mean, I have tons of Purple Stuff (lots of it is on vinyl though like that Mazarati album and The Family album) but I have 4 CDs of outtakes I have the 94 East album of '78 and a concert from '80 (at City Lights in ATL) when he was touring with Rick James shortly before he got the boot... I am willing to trade for just that one track "Modernaire" [Edited 1/19/06 12:05pm] because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

The packaging is very lacklustre, but the Retrospective set is worth getting if you like that kind of music - Think A Flock Of Seagulls/Billy Idol/Pat Benatar 82-85 kinda sound.
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of a lot of the material. If they had received the right promo and attention from a record label, I think The Dez/The Modernaires could've had at least a couple of big hit singles.

If they had received the right promo and attention from a record label, I think The Dez/The Modernaires could've had at least a couple of big hit singles. Very true. I heard from some cats that would DEFINATELY know that WB was gung ho in releasing Dez's album in 84 right along with The Time's Ice Cream Castle, Apple6 Sex Shooter and Sheila's joint. To WB, it made perfect marketing sense. Everybody at the label knew Dez, just like they knew P. BUT, P didn't want compettion of any kind to get in the way of Purple Rain. So word is is that P and his managers at the time went and complained to WB about them releasing Dez's album, saying it would be counter-productive. So, they said they would wait a year after P's album and the film. But by then, Dez's album had lost it's juice so WB said fuck it all together. I saw Dez open for Billy Idol in 84. His band was cool and so was Dez. If WB had went ahead and released Dez's album like they were going to, Dez DEFINATELY would have had a couple of bonafide hits. He was to visual in P's band. Everybody knew who Dez was on sight. MTV would have worn Dez out. In many ways, Dez's image fit better with MTV than P's image did. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Prince helped produce the version that's in Purple Rain and on Dez's Retrospective
I think it'd be cool to also hear Dez's pre-Prince version sometime btw, the Retrospective also includes Dez performing Prince's "When You Were Mine" and an earlier version of Dez's song "After Hi School" (from The Time's first album) [Edited 1/19/06 13:38pm]

I'm a big Dez fan from day one. BTW, his spiritual ONEMAN cd is cool too. But different than what you would expect from him. As soon as I can find a reputable source to purchase his retrospective, I will. But I don't think his site has been active for months. The messageboard there is a virtual ghost town...
