Best And Worst of AWTWIAD Topic
plese say why, I just got the album and I love, it my be the best Prince album I've ever bought (possinly tying 1999 and PR) anyways... Best:Tamborine: Great lyrics and perfect instrumentals, I only wish it was longer Best: Condition Of The Heart (ballad) Beautiful, just beautiful Worst: Around The World In A Day, I can't get into the production, still a good Prince song PS plese don't liist like 5 songs for the best, it takes the fun out of it.

Best: Pop Life - Excellent arrangements and production, a stunning piece of rock and pop merger. The piano chords that resonate throughout the song really gives the song a quality that makes it stick out from alot of the album, IMO. Made a terrfic single, especially the extended version. Sheila E. does a terrific job with the drums, btw.
Worst: Around the World in a Day - Even though it's definitely not a bad song, it's a top notch one, it just leaves alot more to be desire. Just when the song starts to pick up with the synths with Prince screaming "I think I wanna dance!," the song fades to an end. It makes me wish there was an extended jam to this somewhere. Ooh, little darlin' if you're

This is an unfair question. With a little listen, all 9 tracks will blend into one great groove, Around The World In A Day into Paisley Park into Condition of The Heart and finally into Temptation. I wish I could hear this album for the first time and give you a good answer, but I bought this record in '86 and have loved it since. The short answer, there is no best or worst, there only is.

Best: Pop Life, America, and the title track
Worst: Condition of the Heart. I know it's a favourite around here, but I think it's silly and a little boring. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I agree with 8up. I bought it when it first came out and would listen to it on the way to school and back on my Walkman. At the time, it was just too short, just ended too quick. I wanted more. And then came Parade, but that's another story.
There is no worst on ATWIAD. But for me, the best track is Pop Life. I love the extended version of it more, but the album version is my favorite on the album.

If you have no "worst" give me a least favorite.
And yeah Pop Life has always cheered me up:)

I always liked Paisly park and the ladder

my fav: "Around the World in a Day" <--- i love the way it was produced -- great vibe! -- and then there's "Paisley Park" when played live! oh boy
my least fav: maybe "The Ladder" because it can get boring, tho i DO love the gospel sound of it, with the synths, strings, and vocals... "Condition of the Heart" too, except for the great instrumentation of it all... it's just his voice that gets to me on this one... sounds like my grandma singing -- oh yeah, and "Temptation" never sounded original to me (tho i don't hate the song) -- just a basic blues riff with some cool ideas and vocals, but the end is just a bunch of embarassing silliness which i always cut short [Edited 1/12/06 0:16am]

Best: Pop Life - Lyrically, it's one of my favorite things P has ever done. It's got a great laid back beat, and a really great use of a sample.
Worst: I HATE HATE HATE Temptation. I just think it's cheesy, and I really fucking hate that sax solo. Truthfully, I usually stop the album after Pop Life and play She's Always in My Hair and Hello instead of the last 2 cuts. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

yeah, the only possible complaint i have about this album is that
the "extended" versions of both raspberry beret and paisley park, were not included on it. it would have fit so perfectly on there, but perhaps it would've made the album even more difficult to grasp by the average fan. great album with excellent tunes. i don't dislike any of them at all and certainly not enough to pick any as "worst". and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

There are no samples in the ATWID version of Pop Life, only the remixes.

best - paisley park (the melody is beautiful and the tension building),
temptation (guitar solo and some of the weired sounds at the end), raspberry beret (drums at the start). the concept (mixture of lyrical direction/production with artwork) worst - pop life (the melody sounds like its straining), the album overall sounds bass light and could have been longer.

Agreed. Add "extended" versions of America and Pop Life, B-sides She's Always in My Hair, Hello, and Girl and you have a cool double album. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

didn't help did I? [Edited 1/11/06 20:24pm] Well, remember, this site is a lot about just narrowing it down to one song and one style, so don't be surprised when you see such threads. Not good, bad or indifferent - just is what it is. But for what it's worth, I agree with you. I can't say that I have a favorite (outside of She's Always In My Hair, and that's not on the album), but the whole album itself is just like you said, "one big groove" All his best albums are like that (Lovesexy, The Gold Experience, and TRC, to be specific)

I really love "Condition of the Heart". It's best heard on your headphones because the acoustics are so clear and crisp.
It sounds like some sort of corny music class with lots of experimental bits to it. But in parts it's quite funny and nonsense like but theres also sincerity too. I especially like the line: now isn't that A shame that sometimes money Buys U everything and nothing Love, it only seems 2 buy a Terminal condition of the heart I also love "Pop Life". You hardly ever hear an anti-drugs song, pro-eduction in the world of rock and roll. It makes a refreshing change !! I also love "The Ladder" even though it is completely over the top and I wouldn't really recommend it to any fair-weather Prince fans. It seems to work on so many different levels. The King who has everything but doesn't seem to appreciate it and is ungrateful. Yet we are all guily of not having the answers and looking for salvation. Just unlike anything you ever hear in the sterile world of pop. I like Around The World In A Day, Paisly Park and Rasberry Berret is sublime and even none Prince fans like that one !!! [Edited 1/12/06 14:35pm] Shut up already, damn.

The title trrack is the bomb.....I'm Indian (asian) and the fact that someone on Prince's stature released this straiht after Purple Rain blew me away. I still wack it on loud iand when the drum machine clicks in it sounds incredible. Coudl any of the others supertars of the 80's relese this after their biggest hits...Springsteen, Madonna, Jackson, - doubt it.The a side of the ablum flows better - right upto in and and including temptataion...I,dkill for a rematered version of this albumn!

Best: 1.America 2. Raspberry Beret (forget that you've heard it a billion times, it's still a good song) 3. Paisley Park 4. Temptation tied with The Ladder
Worst: 1. Around The World In A Day 2. Condition of the Heart 3. Pop Life 4. Tamborine So rating the album I'd say: Best to Worst: 1. America 2. Raspberry Beret 3. Paisley Park 4. Temptation 5. Tamborine/The Ladder 7. Pop Life 8. Condition of the Heart 9. Around The World In A Day [Edited 1/12/06 15:39pm] [Edited 1/12/06 15:39pm] "She made me glad to be a man"

ATWIAD was poorly received when it came out but has aged very well. It was purposedly left field but with time its excentricities have become refreshing, such as the piano intro of Condition of the Heart. The two last songs of the album are the most precariously balanced, almost threatening to collapse on their own weight toward the end, but you can't ignore them. The Ladder has a particularly strong beginning and Temptation is great too -- and I've grown to kind of like the end like a bit of paisley chestnut.
