Best album during his "wilderness years"?

I have all of Prince's albums up to Emancipation and only two from then to Musicology.

Could you tell me please what do you think was his best album between Emancipation and Musicology...the so called wilderness years?

I want to get a few albums from these years and I wanted to know which are the best.

Wilderness Years? I've never head that period explained as the wilderness years and I'm not sure what that even means.

In my opinion the wilderness years should be between 1993 and 1995 smile

You know, when he did all those concept albums about surviving in the woods and shit. I didn't really care for "New Power Latrine-Digging." disbelief

Princey, Princey Crockett; Prince of wild frontier!

I would consider the time mentioned as his "wildless years".

Oh for crying out loud...somebody answer the poor guy's question...

1997 - Crystal Ball is a nice set to grab, especially for the fourth disc, "The Truth."
1998 - New Power Soul - not a favorite (to say the least) among Prince fans, although if you like the overall "sound" of Emancipation, there are some things to like about the album.
1999 - The Vault - A collection of older songs that were all previously unreleased (aside from "She Spoke 2 Me," although the version on this album has a long instrumental ending not present on the Girl 6 soundtrack. It's cool and somewhat "jazzy" or "bluesy" I guess you could say. Worth the cost of the CD for "When the Lights Go Down" and "5 Women" IMHO.
1999 - Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic - the latter is a remix album, generally viewed as better than the proper album. Again, not viewed as a classic album by any stretch by most folks, but there are gems like the quirky "Tangerine," fun "Pretty Man," cool "Strange But True" and "Beautiful Strange" that are worth having.
2000 - All single songs internet-released through the club, most of which you can buy today as compilation albums "The Slaughterhouse" and "The Chocolate Invasion" through the club.
2001 - The Rainbow Children - you either love it or you hate it. But if you love the organic sound and "band" feeling of that era, it's definitely worth buying for the music alone. The lyrics may hit you sideways. The Darth Vader narrator most definitely will.
2002 - One Nite Alone (piano) - A nice album of mostly piano/vox, but not the instant classic that most folks around here thought it might be when word got out that Prince was releasing an all piano/vox album.
2002 - One Nite Alone (live) - three discs that try to capture the vibe of the tour, succeeding on some ways and failing in others. You'd better listen to and decide you like The Rainbow Children before buying. Disc 3 is an aftershow disc that would be great to buy on its own if you could.
2002- Xenophobia - All "fusion jazz" instrumentals, one of my personal favorite instrumental albums by Prince. It's like an instrumental version of The Rainbow Children album.
2003 - NEWS - Four tracks, all instrumental, and all 14 minutes long. Great on headphones, but I'd say it takes patience to get through and learn to love.
2004 - Musicology - sounds like you have it.

Of all those, if I had to pick one, I'd go with Crystal Ball just for the previously unreleased gems and the Truth album...and the bang for the buck (lots of tracks there since it's essentially 4 CDs).

Secondly, I'd pick One Nite Alone Live. Here's why -- if you haven't heard any of his 2001-2003 material, this live set will give you a glimpse of it, plus let you hear some of "the hits" live, plus get you a CD of aftershow jams.

As for a studio album, I guess I'd have to pick Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (the remix album).

My 2 cents...

I wasn't pooping on TRC -- I was just being honest as to the general concensus 'round these parts.

Personally, I like most of the album quite a bit. But, as a recommendation for someone who has followed Prince through 1996 and then bought Musicology? It would probably get a lot of WTF? looks, for sure. Could be good. Could be bad.

Emancipation itself is one of the best, I think. It was one of P's more ambitious project, and it has some very good songs and atmosphere.

Other than that The Rainbow Children is the one! It is unique, artistic, ambitious, and it kicks *ss!

Be sure to grab that one!

If you like the vibe of Controversy and "The Black Album", you'll like Newpower Soul. There's no lofty theme or preaching-songs.

The ratio of good songs to not-so-good songs is much higher than anything since Batman, although most fans seem to hate it.

The Wilderness years hmmm

For me 93-94, 97-2000 were just kinda cold.

The pure music was o.k., it was his lyrics that were mostly meaningless during those years.

I had very high hopes for Emancipation but again felt like it was just o.k. but definetly more accessible lyrics.

It seemed they were TOO personal, not "Universal" (not much I could connect with or would give me a feeling inside) enough for me to care what he had to say. Bought all of the releases anyway, been a life long fan but found myself rarley listening to anything from those time periods.

Judging by what you've heard so far... go with the 4CD Crystal Ball/The Truth set and the retail version of Rave. After you've digested that, then start filling in the blanks with NewPower Soul, The Vault, etc...

Excellent summary.

Buy everythinbg on here except for NOOSE/SNOOZE. That is borin, meandering crap. If you want a great instrumental album to go with the sublime Xpectation, get CNOTE, which is available as a download from NeoPurpleGestapoMusicClub.com.

- I know many fans hate The Vault because they don´t consider it a ´Prince´ album (some fans seem more concerned about his ´attitude´ over his music, which I never understood). This album contains some of his strongest songs and great arrangements, but unfortunately it was released as a contract filler and Prince chose to promote Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. Too bad.

I admit when i first got it i was majorly disappointed, I was expecting something like Crystal Ball, but with time Ive grown to love some of the songs and whilst as an album it doesnt stand up, it valuable to any collector. I've sequenced all the tracks into my ipod playlist chronologically, so Old Friends 4 Sale comes at the end of Parade, and Rest Of My Life and When The lights go down appear amongst prince tracks.

Coming back to the discussion of his wilderness years, I would place my albums like so:

The Rainbow Children - A Brilliant album. Prince goes organic.

The Truth - another fantastic collection. Comeback and Welcome 2 The Dawn are standouts
One Night Alone - Could have been better, it meanders abit in parts, but its worth it for the One Night Alone, his beautiful cover of A Case of U and the stunning Avalanche.

Crystal Ball - Not a proper album, but all good prince fans should own this one. Worth it for the Sign Of The Times outtakes alone.

One Night Alone Live.... - Prince live, say nothing more. The 3rd Aftershow disc is the outstanding one. Worth the high price for his live versions of When U Were Mine, Extraordinary, The Ballad Of DP and the fucking awesome Joy In Repetition.

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic - Gets a lot of stick on this board, rightly so in some parts (Hot Wit U) but songs like I Love U But I Dont Trust you are Prince at his very best.

New Power Soul- A good album, but there are some real stinkers on there, and he's just going through the motions a lot of the time. Come On is brilliant though.

The Chocolate Invasion / Slaughterhouse - There are some cools ongs on these, but its clear to see why he never released them as an official albums. To many fans they represent the real wilderness years (2000-2001) as they're cold and uninspired.
