Alright...I spent the whole day at work yesterday listening to the albums that we're lumping into this cateogry. Musically and creatively, I don't know how anyone could say that the Rainbow Children doesn't succeed. It's like a space-age, religious funky dream. From a "sound" perspective, the album is like nothing Prince has recorded. It's multilayered, complex, with stuff going on all other the place. Whether you like it or hate it, there's no doubt that Prince labored over this album. He could've probably recorded three albums like "Rave" or "NPS" in the time it took him to put TRC together.
But, for what BobPaisleyPark asked for, I'll stand by my initial take above. But there's a lot of beautiful music on TRC, that's for sure. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/ |

Doozer...people only dislike TRC because of it´s lyrics...if they didnt talk about spirituality/religion or didnt have a ´radical´ meaning, it would have been considered one of his best albums.
Since I don´t care about the lyrics, it´s one of my Top5 albums ever. If I had to go to a desert island and could only bring 5 Prince Cds, TRC would be one of them. |

Since I don´t care about the lyrics, it´s one of my Top5 albums ever. If I had to go to a desert island and could only bring 5 Prince Cds, TRC would be one of them. ditto I remember the first time i listened to it i hated it. But now its probably one of my favourite albums. However I do disagree with him comparing the holocaust and slavery. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Just a note of clarification here: Rave IN2 is the remix album, not Rave UN2. But the poster is correct -- get the remix version. It's worth it for Beautiful Strange alone.

Worth the cost of the CD for "When the Lights Go Down" and "5 Women" IMHO. 1999 - Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic - the latter is a remix album, generally viewed as better than the proper album. Again, not viewed as a classic album by any stretch by most folks, but there are gems like the quirky "Tangerine," fun "Pretty Man," cool "Strange But True" and "Beautiful Strange" that are worth having. 2000 - All single songs internet-released through the club, most of which you can buy today as compilation albums "The Slaughterhouse" and "The Chocolate Invasion" through the club. 2001 - The Rainbow Children - you either love it or you hate it. But if you love the organic sound and "band" feeling of that era, it's definitely worth buying for the music alone. The lyrics may hit you sideways. The Darth Vader narrator most definitely will. 2002 - One Nite Alone (piano) - A nice album of mostly piano/vox, but not the instant classic that most folks around here thought it might be when word got out that Prince was releasing an all piano/vox album. 2002 - One Nite Alone (live) - three discs that try to capture the vibe of the tour, succeeding on some ways and failing in others. You'd better listen to and decide you like The Rainbow Children before buying. Disc 3 is an aftershow disc that would be great to buy on its own if you could. 2002- Xenophobia - All "fusion jazz" instrumentals, one of my personal favorite instrumental albums by Prince. It's like an instrumental version of The Rainbow Children album. 2003 - NEWS - Four tracks, all instrumental, and all 14 minutes long. Great on headphones, but I'd say it takes patience to get through and learn to love. 2004 - Musicology - sounds like you have it. Of all those, if I had to pick one, I'd go with Crystal Ball just for the previously unreleased gems and the Truth album...and the bang for the buck (lots of tracks there since it's essentially 4 CDs). Secondly, I'd pick One Nite Alone Live. Here's why -- if you haven't heard any of his 2001-2003 material, this live set will give you a glimpse of it, plus let you hear some of "the hits" live, plus get you a CD of aftershow jams. As for a studio album, I guess I'd have to pick Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (the remix album). My 2 cents... [Edited 2/9/06 10:36am] "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

They both have their week and strong parts. The only thing that Lovesexy could be superior is in the ´innovative´ field. But TRC is a masterpiece also. Very cohesive album. |

- Rave In2 is indeed better...some songs are extended, and it´s so cool. But I prefer the original ´Undisputed´ and ´Rave´....´Strange But True´ was removed from the original too... Well, my advice is...get both  |

I hate to break the trend here, but I really don't enjoy The Rainbow Children. I tried to get into it but I just cant! 
So I think you NEED to get Crystal Ball. It's a great collection of Prince songs old and new, plus The Truth (which has SERIOUSLY grown on me since I bought it). The Crystal Ball/Truth set is one of my essential Prince possessions I also quite like Rave Un2/In2 the Year Fantastic, though its gets peed on alot by orgers. Beautiful Strange, The Greatest Romance, Strange but TrueBaby Knows, Hot Wit U (remix) are all awesome songs. Thirdly, One Night Alone (piano) is wonderful. It has been my personal wintertime soundtrack this year  If you will, so will I | |
