I gotta say 1999. Even though it sounds dated, 1999 is the greatest ever.

Yes of course most songs rely on repetition, but the "1999" album takes the piss in my opinion. As I said in my earlier post it is as though Prince found a loop or a keyboard sound he liked, pressed repeat and then sung over the top. Songs like "Automatic", "Something in the Water", "Let's Pretend We're Married", "DMSR", "Lady Cab Driver" just don't develop or go anywhere - they just hit a groove and stick with it for way too long. But this is my opinion and just because you disagree doesn't mean either of us are wrong. Somebody said I'd clearly not heard "1999" all the way through. Actually I have, many times. I was given the cassette of it back in 1987 by a friend who had bought it and didn't like it, so knowing I was a fan he handed it on to me for free. I listened to it and it did nothing for me. Since then I've tried again, even bought the CD to see if that was somehow better, but no. I've never liked it one little bit, apart from "1999" and "LRC". As for the other songs, "Free" is turgid shit, as is "International Lover." Again, my opinions only - not wrong ones. In future, before you flame, just understand that not everyone likes the same thing. It's funny ALL the reasons that you don't like "1999" are all the reason's that I love it. I love the repetitiveness of the beat on "Automatic" and "Let's Pretend We're Married"! "Free" and "Internation Lover" are the BEST turgid shit ever.. Sign o' the Times. Easily. It's much more interesting.
It's more diverse, and Adore is a jewel that will live on forever untouched in the anals of pure music artistry. If I was Your Girlfriend, U Got the Look, Starfish, It, SOTT... the only songs on the album I never really cared for are The Ballad of Dorothy Parker... and at times The Cross and put me to sleep. 1999 in all honesty... bores me. I LOVE the title track and Little Red Corvette... and A-U-T-O matic and Free... but the rest I can pretty much do without. (Well, maybe not Lady Cab Driver. That song was legendary to me when I was 10. So bad... so dirty... yet, so coooool!) Even Delirious... I always thought it was Prince's homage to sounding like Elvis. Cool tune, but not extremely memorable. OH... I almost forgot about International Lover!! Love that song! It's an adventurous tune, and I think Prince is a lyrical gymnast throughout the cut! Untouchable! Purple Rain is a classic. When Doves Cry changed my life. It MADE me a lifelong Prince fan. The album is FILLED with classics... and how can anyone not appreciate The Beautiful Ones. BUT... my choice... in order... would be SOTT, 1999, then PR. PR... in all honesty... might be last on my list probably because I've listened to it SO DAMNED MUCH already! The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!
