how many fans were scared of prince when he first came on the scene

i remember hearing those stories about him worshipping the devil...and being really strange and just evil. the anti michael jackson on all levels.but somehow i think that is what intrigued me to know more and beneathe all the rumours i realized hey this guy is talented and he as attitude. wish todays music had more of that, even the artist that show some attitude are really watered down and unoriginal.

Anxiety

i thought he was girly, but i liked tranny pop stars when i was a kid. i was big into boy george and annie lennox and michael jackson, so prince just kinda fell into line for what i listened to. lol

i feel u on ALL LEVELS.....

i been a MJ fan all my life and the little i knew of prince from MJ RELATED STORIES and rumors wasn't really good.

I thought that he was a devil worshipper and into some sort of occult thing. just crazy out of his mind- havin lil messages in his songs about satan and all that.
that creeped me the fuck out but his music was callin me. dude is intruiging, i cant lie.
i did my research and was glad to know that dude is not a satanist or anything like that, many of his songs and hidden messages are about god.
he's just another dude trying to fight the battle of good and evil.

but i cant lie dude is creepy if u dont do ur research.
from mj and prince i learned not to judge from the outside. anyone who are fans of these two should know that already!

I actually wrote about this over a year ago on here. Yeah, girls, especially black girls, would comment on how P looked evil. In his eyes. This was around Controversy. Many thought he didn't look right on the cover. I would hear older black women, my friends mothers or aunts, they would all comment on that album cover. Around 1999 album, the satanic rumours were really heavy. I think P got wind of this during Controversy, so he stuck a pic of just his eye on the record of 1999. Yeah, there are quite a bit of little messages in his productions from 81-84, definately.

believe it or not...there was a time when most of his fans didnt have enough exposure to him to realize he was tiny...a lot of his fans in the early days were teens that looked at him as a grown wild man...i must say...i was at least 20 years old before i even considered the thought "hey he's kinda tiny" so imagine his jr high and high school fans that only saw the rare video that would come on sometimes "pre 1999" with his dancing around with wild hair..a raincoat like a flasher...panties on..and make up while singing about sex and having a cross on stage as a prop...???? eek

I wasn't scared, just curious. The first exposure to Prince I remember (aside from Batman, which I didn't realize 'til years later was P.' music) was when he was on Muppets Tonight. I was 11 and thought he was the cutest lil thing, all made up and sparkly and not much bigger than Kermit. love2

Well, for goodness sake, there have been rumors that he was a 7th Day Adventist Preacher. And with the at best estranged way Prince used to appear in interview and TV appearances, along with the whole Napoleon thing, probably scared some folks, kind of like it scares me to watch a female batterer - cuz it seems to together and out of control combined. Prince must have a dark side, too.

What does someone's size have to do with anything?
There could be many things about a person that could imtimidate or scare another person.

No way. He rubbed up against every stereotype and sexual definition out there and I worshiped the man for that very reason. He scared a lot of parents though. One time I was like 13 listening to Controversy in my basement(playing Atari) and Jack U Off came on. My Dad overheard and smash went the record on the wall. Speaking of walls. He then ripped down all my pictures of him. My whole wall was covered. The fact that he could strike such fear in my parents fueled my love for him even more. Prince was great ammunition in my teen years.
Now my parents like him. I'm not sure what happened. I guess some of his newer stuff gets played on adult contemporary stations....

Actually, I hadn't heard the devil-worshipping rumors, until my mother told me during a full blown tirade of tearing up my room and getting rid of everything Prince related. I was warned repeatedly that listening to Prince would destroy my soul and I should listen the someone wholesome like Michael Jackson... eek

Man oh man, I wish she'd have lived long enough to see how that played out!

Anywhoo, to properly answer the question...No, I've never been scared of Prince.

there's a great thread in here somewhere about "the vampirical essence of prince' . Yes he is spooky, can't scare me cuz I'm crazier than him. There were rumours in the early days that he was a devil worshipper and people claimed "he scared the shit" out of them, something about his eyes. All rockers have been a little creepy, if you didn't know who elvis was men would sort of look and wonder women probably felt that vampirical lustful attraction repulsion that they sometimes do for the outsider.

Good post. As I posted earlier, I DEFINATELY recall folks truly feeling creeped out by P. This didn't jump off untill Controversy. It became waaaay more pronounced during Purple Rain. 1999 and PR was loaded with messages, audio and visual. But yeah, rumours was out in 83 that some of P's pictures were evil. If u held them in the mirror....little shit like that. O.g P fans will definately be hip to this. Girls dug him but were scared at the same time and he played off that. He even fucks with it in UTCM with the "Bela Eyes" scene.

This is definately true! I remember my cousin having a huge picture of Prince with the Afro on her wall. I was scared to look at for too long. His eyes scared the crap out of me. And my mom would always tell me he was the devil. She wouldn't buy his music for me like she would with MJ. I used to have to sneak and listen to my neighbors Controversy album. lol

I was more scared of what my Pentecostal Pastor father would do if he knew that I had a copy of the Controversy album in the house. He couldn't stand Prince. I remember once when I was reading a review of the Dirty Mind album in the Star & Tribune. My Dad happened to peak over my shoulder and saw that picture of Prince standing in front of the bed springs, He said real loud "THAT PRINCE IS SICKENING!" And snatched the paper away from me.

Hah, that's so true. That's how people used to view Prince in the early 90s - "the evil, less-successful version of Michael Jackson". I can relate to that.
