Vault Heist! I'm sick and tired of hearing about all these musical masterpieces in Prince's Vault. I say we all don ski-masks and break in and listen to them all! Who's with me????? Now all we need is a catchy name like The Purple Bandits, Chocolate Invaders or the 1999'ers. Oh yeah and dont' tell Prince -- shhh.

I don't think he would like us messing with his kids....he might let us play them them a while if we asked nicely. Besides, I like to see them when he decides they should be born.

Okay then, you can't come. You're obviously that one guy in the heist who's working undercover for the other side. You're probably wearing a wire! Only problem is now you know too much. Sorry dude, nothing personal. Just business. Anybody else having second thoughts??? .....I didn't think so!

Put on some clothes, you pervert! There's always one in every group. Wait, are you a woman? If so, take off some clothes. We need the inspiration to pull this heist off.

Ya'll know what's gonna happen. We find the vault, open it, and then all of a sudden we hear these speakers go off with that Joker laugh from the end of Batman and we'll all be PWN3D. One of Dansa's org hornies

That would be funny. But I always thought we'd go down in a blaze of glory....the inevitable shootout with the security/cops guarding the doggone thing.

This thread is conjuring pictures in my head of Geraldo Rivera and his infamous search for Al Capone's vault. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Haters! Robbery. The nerve! See that's where you're wrong. We're not robbing, Prince. We're just listening to his music without his permission. We'll put everything back like we found it when we're finished. At the most, we'll be guilty of breaking and entering. Sure, you're all noble now beforehand, but you'll be the first one asking for bootleg copies afterwards. Thats for you! Nobody crosses the Thieves in the Temple or 1999'ers -- still haven't decided on a name yet.

how about the sausage jockeys? Is that your suggestion or confession? It should somehow tie in with Prince's music. Don't say LadyCabdrivers either! Thieves In The Temple is nice. It's acronym is TITT. Okay that may be a little too juvenile. 1999'ers may be the one.

If Prince recorded a song and left it in the vault he probably left it there for a reason, such as it isn't very good. Look at his last few albums where he's released vault tracks (such as the album I threw away after one listen, "The Vault") and there's all the evidence you need. He probably recorded the songs as an act of catharsis, getting it out of his system so he could move onto something else.

You're not really up on what the vault contains are you? Therein lies true greatness, and lots of it too. and more fool you if you threw away a Prince album after one listen, most fans wouldn't be fans at all if they followed your logic. It can take awhile to truly 'get' a prince album. . [Edited 1/8/06 4:57am]

[Edited 1/8/06 4:57am] Actually yes, I am very much up on what the vault contains, having been a fan since 1983/84, been a member of "Controversy" (when it existed), having read numerous books on the man (including all of "The Vault" - yes, all of it)... I could go on. When an artist decides to shelve or stockpile something they do it for a reason. Authors write vast quantities of stories and books and only ever release small amounts of it, not because they don't want to flood the market but because it isn't quite up to scratch, and they release the very best of what they have done. Musicians are the same. When an idea comes to you, be it a song, story, picture, novel, whatever, it bugs you and bugs you until you've got it out of your system, and then you're "free" of it. Once it is done, it is done, and you do something with it, be it release it into the world or just put it away somewhere. I firmly believe that Prince releases what he feels is his best material and everything else is stored away in the vault. Granted, there are some classics in there, personal favourites of mine including "In All My Dreams", "Witness" - various versions of this one - and "Rebirth of the Flesh", but I wouldn't be surprised if most of the songs in there are dross, like much of the filler from "Crystal Ball" and pretty much every album from "Batman" onwards. More fool me for throwing an album away after one listen? Hey, each to their own. Personally I'm ruthless, and if something doesn't grab me then I get rid of it. I've given up on so many books if they haven't hooked me in the first twenty pages (I just dumped one yesterday having read 250 pages of its 600 as it was doing nothing for me and I was completely ambivalent about it) and I've done the same with music. When I bought "The Vault" (CD, not book) I had massive hopes for it but when I listened to it I was so disheartened with what I heard, feeling that every single track was turgid crap ("My Little Pill" comes to mind instantly here - I remember listening to that and thinking "Prince, what are you doing?"), and as soon as it finished I put it back into the case and stuck it on my shelf where it remained, untouched, until I moved house. When I moved I had a major clear-out, getting rid of anything I didn't need to take, and "The Vault" was one of the things that went to the tip. No regrets whatsoever in parting with it. I respect your opinion entirely, and you should respect that of others. I know some Prince albums take a while to "get" ("ATWIAD" took months for me having bought it on the release date, listening to it that evening then not touching it for months, but when I did, ohhh...) but there has to be something to *make* you want to "get" it, something to entice you back. "The Vault" had nothing that made me curious about giving it time, letting it grow, and so it went to the tip. At the end of the day I'm a fan rather than a sycophant. If Prince does something amazing, great, I love it. If he does something crap then I'm sorry, fan or not, it is crap. These days 90% of what he does is crap to me.

I do respect your opinion, your initial post just made it look like a knee-jerk reaction (throwing the album away). Thanx for taking the time to explain in more depth. I gotta say there's nothing wrong with '5 Women' and 'When The lights Go Down' tho. but as you said, each to their own. [Edited 1/8/06 8:45am]

I ADORE Prince's music. Get it? I crack me up. Anyway, I think the man is indeed a musical genius. But like most of us, he doesn't always know what's best for him. If you've read the Leeds interview, you already know that Prince decides on what singles to release off an album. Prince is the man and all that. But he's made some horrid choices when it comes to releasing his own material.
The CD of the Vault or whatever was Warner Brother's doing, wasn't it? I'm not certain. But they probably released some songs lying around to complete Prince's contractual obligations. But I won't belabor the point. I think Prince has some genuine works of art in the Vault. But that's just my opinion. Now without further adieu c'mon, you had to seen that one coming....
