MaytesAnus said: Great. Go and "teach" South American Indian cultures, who have no concept of "sin" as it's defined in the West, about "sin" and "repentance."
They don't need to complain about foreign oil companies taking over and polluting all their land... they just need to "confess their sins" and "repent!" Amen to that. Missionary work is bad - even if the intention is "good".

If someone wants to do good works purely for the sake of the less fortunate, without religious strings attached, the Peace Corps is a great way to do it!

Actually the Peace Corp was set up by the Kennedy administration to counter the good works done by Che Guevara in Latin America. Che's organizing was getting at the root of Latin American poverty: U.S. capitalist imperialism. JFK's plan was to fly in stupid American college students to do "good works" like teaching people, who have been driven off their lands by U.S. corporate-serving foreign policy, how to fish, farm, etc. AS IF THESE THOUSAND YEAR OLD CULTURES NEVER KNEW HOW! What we have today is a whole mythology about third world people: that we should go "help them out." These people do not need to be shown how to do agriculture, they need the LAND to farm. They don't need to be shown how to fish, they need access to the water frontage and shores and they need their waterways and their bays and rivers to be kept from toxic dumps, etc. They don't need to be shown how to feed their kids; they don't need some North American Peace-Corps volunteer to show them how to do that. They need the conditions to sustain life which have been hampered by imperialism. BTW, in their architectural skills, their horticulture, their crafts, hunting and fishing technology, medicine, mid-wifery, etc.. many of these people in the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th Century were way ahead of the Europeans or even European North America.

Hmmm, very interesting. A friend of mine went to Guatemala with the Peace Corps recently. I'll ask her what she's taught about the origins/history of the Corps and compare it with your info! My primary intention of mentioning the Peace Corps, though, was to say that true "aid" to any human being is given without strings attached: i.e., I'll help you with a problem and you don't have to listen to me talk about my God.

Have fun. But if any corporation asks you to look for resources in the area you're going, it would benifit those people a lot if you wouldn't tell. Watch out also for church leaders who spend this time on a payed safari/vacation. Take note of these behaviors and consider that maybe the natural order is better off left alone, and then if it's still in your heart to help these people more power to you.
