simple: those who hate it think it's pretty silly and not up to par on what they think he should be doing, which would be regressing musically.[/quote] rather then making assumptions and speaking on peoples behalf why dont you just let people share their own opinion? this thread wasnt, "whats your opinion about others opinions on illusion, pimp and circumstance?" damn... btw: happy mary hartman mary hartman.. my take? eehhh...i actually like the song...bye bye. I like it, but the production on it flat out sucks. It makes it sound rather flat, and its overall sound is just uneven and amateur sounding. I suppose that was maybe the point of it, but a song like Partyup captured a raw sound without sounding flat. So while I do like it, I can't help but feel like he missed a golden opportunity to make it great. I like this song, it was the first song I listen to, because I was so sick of Musicology the song by the time I got the album. "Shut Up, Already. DAMMM!!!!!!!"

That song is so funky it is absolutely ridiculous but if you dont understand music you miss it. It typifys the entire point of musicology. Its spare and funky beyond belief. The clever lyrics, slang and what not are a happy coincedence and besides the point. The point is that funk is in song structure. Not studio gimickry.
