Prince would have RUINED Me'Shell N'Degeocello's career The thought of these 2 collaborating together is mind numbing Oh, the potential.....
I am however, absolutely thrilled that she never signed with Prince's label because really, one of the most talented singers he's ever had, Margie Cox, was relegated into oblivion.... Me'Shell would never have been able to branch out and flourish the way she did. And for that, Big ups to Madonna Prince has a musical brownthumb. Like a brownthumb who kills every plant they ever try to take care of (i'm one of them ), he just doesn't have the touch of cultivating truly talented artists. Rosie Gaines, Margie Cox, Bonnie Boyer, and to a certain degree Sheila E (singing isn't her strong suit but her musical talent more than makes up for her deficiency) and I would also classify Jill Jones in there, although she really didn't go far either....that about sums up the real talent that Prince has worked with. He would have fucked up with Me'Shell as well. So Prince, thank you for keeping your mitts off Me'Shell 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I have to agree
Prince usually produces their protegees to sound like him. I never heard him producing somebody with some distance. But it would be real cool if they collaborated. Prince on guitar/keys, Me shell on bass

agreed, especially in the 90's when his mojo was gone.

was he really playing guitar on the 'cookie' album?

Ruined is a strong word when Me'Shell didn't even become a household name when she was under Madonna's umbrella. Like every other serious musician in Prince's camp she would've enjoyed some kind of success as a session musician for other artist.... it happened for Wendy & Lisa (beyond Revolution days), happened for Sheila (after she left the Paisley camp).
It would be even better if they collaborated now.

No, it´s the Funkadelic guy...what is his name? But his solo indeed reminds me of Prince...

It would be even better if they collaborated now. Whether or not she became a household name under Maverick is really irrelevant. She was allowed to flourish in her own way on Maverick and Prince would have strangled her to death and played head games and ego trips on her ass. She is not a "session" artist and thank God she was never relegated to that status. She is a genius on par with Prince, IMNSHO 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I heard she plays bass on two songs from Emancipation.
Rumor is she is credted as "Shiva" and that it was a quick one-off in a New York recording studio or sumthin'. Anyone know more about this??

Because then you'd have to say she's a genius on par with Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sly and the likes, and that's just not happening.

Taken from discography on freemyheart.com: 16. Emale 3:38 35. The Love We Make 4:39 Collaborated with The Artist in N.Y. studio session on the bass lines and melodies. Neither of the tracks include her actual playing. For contractual reasons, credited as Shiva by The Artist: "Re-recorded in Minneapolis after New York paved the way. Thanks, Shiva."

I don't think she would have gotten as much exposure as she had already gotten. It ain't safe to say that Prince would've ruined her when Madonna didn't expose her to the masses like she deserved. Besides... isn't the reason she left the Maverick/Warner fold is because they wouldn't release Dance of the Infidel when she recorded it 2 years ago? That doesn't sound like she was allowed to "flourish" Let's not forget there have been a handful of albums that were on Paisley Park that Prince had very little to do with: Good Question Three O' Clock Dale - Riot In English Eric Leeds - Things Left Unsaid Jacob Armen - Drum Fever Belize (not released but Prince had no input) I think had she signed with Prince her downfall would have been through the demise of Paisley Park Records, not solely through the restrictive production of Prince.

Occassional collaborations would be cool, but I'm totally with you, Supa, on Prince having any more extensive role in shaping Meshell's career.

You're right. Prince has a problem with letting his proteges branch out or experiment as artists. Things have to be done his way, And if the record doesn't do well, he's quick to lose interest. I can see Me'Shell quitting the business in frustration under Prince, And I'm glad she chose the path she did. She's very talented.

The songs were worked on at Battery Studios in New York on Wednesday, July 3, 1996. She played bass on both tracks. They were gearing up for the appearance on Letterman. I love Me'shell (a couple of the best concerts I have ever been to) but I believe she has is in a career slump and could use some revitalization. Her first three albums were brilliant and interesting with great songs. I have found her last three albums (the dub record, Cookie, the jazz record) directionless without the great songwriting promise she showed earlier in her career. We all know she can jam but composition is not easy. I would love to see her collaborate with Prince on equal terms. As comparing her musical skills to Prince, it's nice rooting for the independant underdogs but not many musicians in the history of music have the brother's range of talents. He has virtually created his own subgenre of music. His influence shouldn't be underestimated. Me'shell, herself, is a huge fan and points to his music, revolutionary gender/sexual imagery as inspirational. Does anyone know the story of when she was first introduced to Prince by Wendy?

Cookie is hardly directionless and there is some excellent songwriting on there 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

You're right, Cookie was "uneven" but not directionless. I put Me'shell in the category of brilliant artists that I will always buy her next cd searching for the "masterpiece" that is yet to come. She is so perfect live. Are her and the Alice Walker's daughter (also a great writer) still together? Imagine Prince with an artistically challenging musical partner for a muse. Is it possible with his self-absorbing ego? But the Salma Hayek combo is interesting.

for me, me'shell's first album, 'bitter' and 'comfort woman' are kinda my trilogy of genius as far as she's concerned. there's stuff i love from all her albums, but her first album was such a great collection of pop songs, and 'bitter' and 'comfort woman' both transport listeners to a completely different world of her creation...i love when an artist can create a whole environment on an album just with sound, and she's been able to do that for me at least twice. i gotta love her for that.

If Me'Shell had signed to Paisley Park Records, she would have released ONE album and then faded away.Look at how many Paisley Park artists and bands there are that have only released one album on that label:
The Family Mazarati Jill Jones T.C.Ellis The Three O'Clock Tony LeMans Ingrid Chavez Good Question Dale Bozzio Taja Sevelle Carmen Elektra I don't know why,but most of the artists on Paisley Park never released another album.Perhaps Prince loses interest quickly? Perhaps the artists gets pissed when the album inevitably flops, and decide to cancel the contract? Whatever the case, the same thing would have happened to Me'Shell. At least at Maverick, she was allowed to record three of four albums and develop a devoted following.
