Rarely talked about songs...

Let's hear it for some rarely talked about songs! Love 'em or not?
And why if you'd like!

Soft and Wet

The Ladder

Under the Cherry Moon

I Wonder U

Strange Relationship (outtake version)

Vicki Waiting

All of Graffiti Bridge, except for JIR and The Question of U

Jack U Off

My Computer

In2 the Light/I Will

Da Bang

Make Yo Mama Happy

Dark vs. So Dark

...or add some songs if you can think of more.

Well, you better do now! mad wink

Soft and Wet - Similar to I Feel For You, but much better IMO. Would love to see him do it nowadays. Without lyric change.

The Ladder - I never liked this one too much because of the production and teh epilogue. The '88 rehearsal version is killer of course, the ONA Tour performance was great, too.

Under the Cherry Moon - Love it!

Strange Relationship - I'm glad he changed it to the SOTT version. This one's kinda dull.

Vicki Waiting - Fun track. Haven't listened to it in ages, though. Shame on me!

Graffiti Bridge - ....uhm, I don't really remember the other songs. I only know that I don't really want remember them.

Jack U Off - Certainly not the best song on Controversy, but good enough. Could use a little more dirty production.

In2 the Light/I will - I rarely listen to C&D, but I'm glad this was included in the September Ahdio Show back then. Great!

Da Bang - Kicks major azz! One of my very favorite Prince tunes, in fact. It's just cool! I cannot get enough of this one!

Make Yo Mama Happy - Undecided on this one... it's good, I guess.

Dark vs. So Dark - I like both but I guess the Come version is just a little better. I wonder why Prince wanted to include this on Crystal Ball though, since the two version are not THAT different.

Soft and Wet - I still have the 45 RPM of this song, but it's not my favorite

The Ladder - Unbelievable chord progression. I could play it on guitar all day.

Under the Cherry Moon - Never liked it.

I Wonder U - Nothing more than a segue, but a good one

Strange Relationship (outtake version) - Any version of this song rocks for me.

Vicki Waiting - Love it. I like most of Batman a whole lot.

All of Graffiti Bridge, except for JIR and The Question of U - I liked the outtakes better. Probably the least-played CD I have.

Jack U Off - Great drum machine work, really peppy music, probably the funniest song he's ever released although I'm sure it wasn't meant to be funny.

My Computer - Love it to death, especially the last minute or so.

In2 the Light/I Will - My two favorite inspirational P songs. Guitar work on Into the Light is excellent

Da Bang - Good song but I like Calhoun Square much better

Make Yo Mama Happy - I play it for my kids all the time. Kind of gets monotonous at the end, but hey - what a great message.

Dark vs. So Dark - Give me Dark.

And I'll add:

Vavoom - Wow, I can't get enough of this song. It starts out so simple and he adds the right layers on every verse, ending up with a multi-layered rock/funk masterpiece. The crunchy guitar solo is top-notch IMO

...or add some songs if you can think of more.

Graffiti Bridge is actually a much better album than most give it credit for, imo. If you remove all the tracks not sung by Prince you get a fairly solid collection.

Can't Stop This Feeling I Got
New Power Generation
The Question Of U
Elephants & Flowers
We Can Funk (w/George Clinton)
Joy In Repetition
Tick, Tick, Bang
Thieves In The Temple
Still Would Stand All Time
Graffiti Bridge

To me, it's a much more enjoyable disc than the 3 that preceded it (Batman, LoveSexy, The Black Album) or the one that followed (Diamonds & Pearls).

Soft and Wet - simply love it, funky, greasy and tongue in cheek nasty

The Ladder - very cool song, tho the lead in speech is a bit schmaltzy

Under the Cherry Moon - absolutely ace. i love the "skip" in the piano

I Wonder U - the first 3 songs on parade are out of this world! thumbs up!

Strange Relationship (outtake version) - hmm, i like the album version

Vicki Waiting - the verse about children is superb, the rest is so-so

All of Graffiti Bridge, except for JIR and The Question of U - Thieves is cool

Jack U Off - never really liked it

My Computer - best thing on Emancipation. career highlight tho not many agree

In2 the Light/I Will - beautiful. not exquisite, but still beautiful

Da Bang - one of my all time fav Prince tunes. it rocks. so incredibly good!!

Make Yo Mama Happy - kind of ok. i like it but hardly ever play it.

Dark vs. So Dark - Dark is much better, So Dark sounds like a bad remix.

another song that is hardly ever discussed is

"TRUST"

perhaps because it's such a bland little tune.

About that statement, you can hear that sort of progression in many a church on a Sunday morning. biggrin Still, it really is nice with what he does with it.

Soft and Wet - alright, but not really the reason why most of us are fans.

The Ladder - fine on its own right, I'm actually most curious about its resemblance to "Purple Rain" structurally and harmonically.

Under the Cherry Moon - I think this is the weakest cut on "Parade", just a camp piece.

I Wonder U - this just might be the second weakest, both songs work as mood pieces.

Strange Relationship (outtake version) - great, but I still rather listen to the album version because of the superior sound quality.

Vicki Waiting - a great song, very princely, I think it's telling that casual listeners usually seem to think this is the weakest song on the "Batman" album.

All of Graffiti Bridge, except for JIR and The Question of U - I'm not a big fan of the production style soundwise, but they are pretty well written tunes in overall.

Jack U Off - I usually press stop when this comes on "Controversy".

My Computer - one of the highlight tracks of the 90s.

In2 the Light/I Will - same as the above, "I Will" though I don't think is that strong a song on its own.

Da Bang - after listening to stuff like Phantomsmasher this does absolutely nothing to me.

Make Yo Mama Happy - I like this a lot, it's quite original (I had trouble telling whether it was from the 80s or the 90s upon first couple of listens).

Dark vs. So Dark - the original definitely, "So Dark" sounds almost amateurish.

Soft and Wet Never really liked the very early stuff - not keen on the squelchy synth sound

The Ladder Like it a lot - I'm a big fan of ATWIAD

Under the Cherry Moon Great, just like the rest of "Parade"

I Wonder U "Lost" classic on "Parade" - love it

Strange Relationship (outtake version) Never heard this version

Vicki Waiting Not keen - don't really like the keyboard riff

All of Graffiti Bridge, except for JIR and The Question of U Some good stuff in here, including "We Can Funk", "Thieves..." and I even quite like the title track - sorry!

Jack U Off Never really liked the second side of "Controversy"

My Computer Crap

In2 the Light/I Will Heard them but they made no impression

Da Bang Actually quite like this. Silly track, but enjoyable

Make Yo Mama Happy Crap

Dark vs. So Dark Both crap - don't like the "Come" album, or the tracks from that era on "Crystal Ball"

...or add some songs if you can think of more.

How about thoughts on Sweet Baby from prince? It's such an enigma on that album - amid all the complex, loud arrangements sits a quiet little throw back to the temperament of the For You album.

Soft and Wet - Love it, my introduction to Mr. Nelson's music

The Ladder - corny in retrospect but I still like it. However, I like the alternate piano version he did in rehersal during the Lovesexy tour on that Prince special better.

Under the Cherry Moon - ok

I Wonder U - Like it

Strange Relationship (outtake version) - like the album version better

Vicki Waiting - like it

All of Graffiti Bridge, except for JIR and The Question of U - title track is corny, Elephants and Flowers is ok, Tick Tick Bang is a hoot (even if the drum track is a complete rip off of a Jimi Hendrix song), We Can Funk is ok (outtake version is better), Thieves in the Temple is cool, Melody Cool is ok, most everything else is filler

Jack U Off - like it

My Computer - like it

In2 the Light/I Will - no like

Da Bang - eh..

Make Yo Mama Happy - crappy track, hate it

Dark vs. So Dark - like them both

Soft and Wet-the first song that shows the playfull and innocent sexy side. This shows it didnt have to start and stop with head and sister

The Ladder- Like the spiritual vs. backroom feel. The ladder is always a climb in any religon. Temptation is being a human being. How typical of us to bargain for a little more instead of just letting go.

Under the Cherry Moon- At the time it was just so defferent for him. It grows on you. There is a flavor of pain, sadness, longing but still a sense of control and the longing for love is just a performance.

I Wonder U- so simple, yet one of the funkiest tunes. Great question with european feel

Strange Relationship (outtake version)- love hate relationship story. We hate what we love and love what we hate. This is a strange relationship because the egos are seperate. Great song

Vicki Waiting- Why is your organ so small I didn't know....I was playing in a cathedral. Great line. One of the best songs on Batman

All of Graffiti Bridge, except for JIR and The Question of U

Jack U Off - gutsy at the time. for a major label. funny also. Mainstream had not seen these ideas before.

My Computer - great

In2 the Light/I Will- Inspiring songs listen they give you hope and courage

Make Yo Mama Happy- one of my favs. He must have taught someone a lesson. Do it for someone else if you can't do it for yourself

Dark vs. So Dark - depends how depresssed you want to get.

Sometimes It Snows In April - Made me cry the first time I heard it.The sense of loss, need, and reconciliation is so touching. Makes you appreciate your life right then and there

shrug

On the other hand, I'd love to hear an entire Prince album that would be nothing but songs like "I Wonder U", "Digital Garden" or even "There's Others Here With Us".
