"Motherless Child" Septimo 22-11-1999 omg, this has to be one of the best guitar solos by Prince ever. well, there are three solo's really. the performance is kick ass, Prince's vox are great and he plays the song over the beat of "Love thy will B Done". there is so much energy in these solo's, but the second 1 is really absurdly cool. especially when prince breaks it down *during* the solo and then builds it up in some way, that is just stellar. there's nothing but this wall of heavy sound, i think its larry on the bass making that wall of sound and Prince is on his guitar cranking out notes so high they could break glass. Or is it ALL just Prince on guitar?? that would be even more fantastic. i also love the way the audience SHOUTS the chant, those people are on fire lol. here's some info on the performance: At 11:30 AM the soundcheck for LA2's Septimo program is supposed to start at Estudio El Alamo. The Artist has an argument with the people in charge there, reportedly refuses to sing live, but later relents. He unnerves Pedro Almodovar who has been scheduled to interview the Artist, but finally cancels and leaves in protest. It's unlikely that the planned recording of one song for TVE 1's (on rental gear) have taken placeat the other studio in the same building on the same day. However, the band eventually play a phenomenal 40 min set for > in the late afternoon. Unfortunately, the artist is not content with the sound quality of the recorded music and cancels the broadcast of this material several times throughout the following year. Studio representative Miguel Bose insists that nothing's wrong with the recording and finally manages to air the complete show in the summer of 2000 Prince was a fickle little bitch back in those days. He also had an argument in Holland over his performance being not good enough to go on the air and about his interview. They were both aired later, but they did indeed both suck lol. However, septimo rules supreme as far as these short tv shows go. damn, what a performance. The complete setlist was: Intro baby knows pretty man motherless child the jam every day people and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

after reading that bit about how he picked some fights
during the day and stepped on many toes, it's just one of those pure Prince things to start "Motherless Child" by saying there was never any reason 2 argue there was never any reason 2 fight from the 1st time adam made love 2 eve from the 1st time she took the bite there was never any reason nice preaching Prince. i bet the producers of the show could see you were being sincere .. listening to it again, that solo must be completely
and solely Prince. it's his guitar that builds that wall of sound before he hits the high notes. man that guitar *talks* and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

What? Pedro Almodovar was going to interview him?
Never knew that. Never put two artists who believe themselves that they are geniuses together. (I love both their work though) Would have loved to see that interview, on the other hand Prince was in a wierd state of mind back then. Remember that interview with the dewaele brothers. But you are right, that performence of motherless child is out of this world, he's on a cloud there.

A lot of folks rave about this performance, but it doesn't do it for me.
There's something seriously wrong with Prince during this performance - in hindsight I think it was this period where he "found" his new faith after a few years of spiritual despair. He has that manic look to him of the newly "saved". (Christ I sound like a bloody fam!) Also note how he almost totally ignores Mayte when she joins him on the "stage" - not real surprising that they split soon after. Plus that sweater is fucking horrendous. All orgnotes and emails requesting trades or how to acquire bootleggage will be ignored. - The ThreadKiller -

I share a lot of your thoughts. There were a bunch of really great performances. But you can tell that he was in an odd mood.. he seemed frustrated that he couldn't get the sound right and it looks like they didn't rehearse well. He kept shouting orders to the band and he kept going to the keyboards himself to do I don't know what, but he didn't seem pleased. At one point during Everyday People, Prince busts out with, " Larry, I think they need a chant, they don't know what to do." That made me go "ouch." Regarding that Mayte thing, I'm with you. He WAS totally ignoring her and she wsa trying to be into it and everything. She look horrible... not at all like herself.. like she was trying too hard. Sad to watch. Especially in comparison to the fact that Larry Graham had his crazy wife up on stage and they are so obviously in love after all these years. All in all, I think that show is a great snapshot of his life and music at that time. Come here, babe.. yeah...
