Well he is certainly past his best, but i think he still makes good music most of the time. But you are right he doesnt make em like he used to in the 80's and even the 90's.[/quote]

Honey, unless you name some of the people, and provide proof that you have jammed and worked with these people, don't even go there. And don't make me have to school you on what a sheep really is. Some might say that you're being a sheep just because you're going along with so many others on here who only like Prince when they can pigeonhole him in as a funk artist.

Dont think so! I love the music he does now, and think some of his newer stuff like news is some of the best material. But generally i dont listen to the new stuff quite as much as the old. Im not one of these fans who constantly rants about how he should go back to his 80's funk days, cause i know theres more to him than that!!

It's funny, when you listen to the song without the video, it just seems plan and ordinary. But, when I watched the video the song sounded alot better. Me personally, I have heard alot worse from him and from other artist of his stature. I have said this many, many times before, let the man be. At the end of the day, we are still going to attend his concerts in support of this album. Why? Because, one he puts on a great show and two, he will be playing other songs as well. Songs, that we all grew to love, just like I am sure some of us will do with this one. People go through changes and mellow, should that prevent them from making music. I did not like "Come"....but, that did not stop me from liking the man.

no no no!

Don't assume that because a person doesn't like his current output that they're "caught in a nostalgia trap", as you put it.

I'm not thrilled with the new song. I'm also 20 years old. I was born a year after Purple Rain was released, and have only been a fan for 4 years. I'm not old enough to remember the "glory days" in any significant way beyond what I read in magazines and online, and the occasional old-school video. What nostalgia trap am I caught in? Are you suggesting that everyone who's not a fan of his newer work is pining for their youth -even though many of us are in our youth, and the nostalgia you suggest is something we're not old enough to have?

You heard it from poetbear68, everyone. I miss a time I didn't exist in. lol

You know...When ever Prince chooses a slow song for a lead single it never does well.

Rave: Greatest Romance
Emancipation: Betcha By Golly Wow!
NPS: The One
Rainbow Children: the whole thing was slow

Come to think of it...B4 "Call My Name" (which is my jam) Prince always does better with fast stuff.

When doves cry
Kiss
Alphabet St.
Rasberry Beret
Gett off
1999
Musicology

Just my opinion wink

I need u to shake Ur lil' ass n hips
I need u to grind like Ur working for tips

Mr7

The song is a 'grower'.

Prince stated in the press conference that 'Te Amo Corazon' is not indicative of the sound of the entire '3121' album.

From what I can gather Prince travelled a bit in 2005 and ended up collaborating with some Brazilian musicians. This is one of the results he has chosen to release as a single.

Personally, I like it. Its very mature and sophisticated. It has beautiful strings and a very nice arrangement. It shows Prince mastering a new genre.

It defies expectations, which is why there are so many posts about it.

This genre of music might not be to everyone's taste, but we all know prince albums tend to be eclectic. I'm sure this will be just one of many styles on display.

I think we might all be very suprised when this turns out to be Prince's best selling single in years.

Peace
Mr7

Actually, it is pretty much exactly what I expected he would release, especially after hearing the direction he turned to on Musicology.

Prince used to take risks musically. Then he got into this phase where he wouldn't shut up about how he didn't care about his sales, didn't care whether he had a hit. But his actions, in particular, his blatant attempts to be commercial with his single releases, demonstrate otherwise.

To me, TRC was a brief detour from this path, and is really the only exciting period there has been since the '95 era NPG broke up.

Prince is capable of making slow jams that break new musical ground and are creative. Take Wasted Kisses... that song is absolutely brilliant, but he's too scared to take ownership of it (leaving it as a hidden track), releasing a flat formulaic song like "The One" instead from the same album.

BBGW, The One, TGRES... this is just another in the long line of flat, boring yawners.

It's no wonder that this site seems to have been transformed so much over the last 5 years. The only part of the fanbase that isn't completely eroded is the "horny female" contingent, and these types of releases are exactly what that contingent wants to hear.

You have to just love how we can still see he is "Online" with the website and that for all the bullshit he isn't gone anywhere.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

Wouldn't it be wise to talk about people's tastes rather than make generalisations as to what's "crap" and what's "something special"? I saw you defending the "Dirty Mind" album on another thread. Now I'm not going to say that "Dirty Mind" is "crap", because many people like it and that gives it merit. But as a pro muso for much of my life, I think my ears and knowledge are good enough to class it as musically childish. His compositions and arrangements are far more sophisticated nowadays.

I'm not crazy about the song nor am I enamoured with Prince's excursion in jazz or AC, but I don't think Prince is done. He always made incursions in genres that are out of his mainstay, which is already pretty varied. Bossa Novais just the latest thing he's tried with various degrees of success. He's never been one genre or another, though he is mostly associated with funk, rock and r n b. Also, Prince always gave his own reading of a certain genre, though he's tended to stick closer to the genre in recent years. There are classic songs about which we could have said "I'd rather hear the real JB" "Hendrix", "Santana". So he's always done that and bossa nova is just the latest. In that vein, it is simply Prince's version of bossa nova, maybe not authentic enough for the purists, like his version of "jazz".

If you're still around after years of disappointment, I think it's because you still hope he can do the music you like again. And a teaser released 4 months before the album just can't give you that much information. Personally, I don't think Prince is done yet or can ever be written off completely. I would have liked a stunning masterpiece to announce the album, but Prince chose to release something underwhelming. I think he did it with an eye on a particular market, but that 3121 will be diverse. So weak move but business as usual.
