June 20 in Prince history - HAPPY 13TH BIRTHDAY TO THE BATMAN ALBUM!!!

June 20, 1989 - Batman album released.

Thirteen years ago today. There are some great gems on the album (it was the album that first got me into Prince, as a former comic book fan who loved the idea of music being made around comic book characters).

How has the Batman album stood up over time, though?

I'll need to dig it out of its batcan and listen to it again...

Jeez, Batman cd is 13 years old...man that ages me.
Booyah, have you read the original 'Dark Knight Returns?' Or 'Kingdom Come'(sounds like some funky prince song, no)?
Both great comics.

The last comic i got into was 'Preacher'. If you get a chance...check out the first book with the first 10 stories. Kinda different, and a great series.

i always saw BATMAN as some kind of "interlude" in his work. how can I say... very interessting, album, really, new kind of electropop, maybe a hint for the musical styles in years to come (house/techno...?)
on LOVESEXY he toyed with electro stuff a little bit in my opinion and GRAFFITI BRIDGE already left that e-style again - in favor for the jazzybandgroovestylesomewhat on DIAMONDS AND PEARLS.
i still like listening to BATDANCE and especially 200 BALLONS. very powerful songs still.
BATMAN is also a good point to start from when exploring PRINCE because it's still very mainstream but at the same time very, well, princely.

Batman signalled the end of the "classic" prince era as far as im concerned. Prince did his "job" on this album but i think it definitely made him change the way he made music. Make music that appeals to the mainstream and you will be rewarded financially was the message; thats why we got Diamonds and Pearls and the Symbol album. Why go slogging yourself to financial ruin by making something as complex as Lovesexy and having little to show for it. The tour of the same name nearly bankrupt him too. Batman was where it all started going wrong.
