All the copies I have got, the song gets stuck when is starts, but after that it is fine.

I love the 12" Some people are like Slinkies...
They're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

I think that Neil Diamond is fabulous.

It's politically naive, and very 70's with it's flute and funky bass stuff. Cool beginning effect. Like the line "one room jungle monkey cage"
most non-prince-fanatics really hated this one from the album "Around the World..."

Love it!
Love the 12"! Love the live video version! lol, my mom used to go up the wall when I would play the 12" all the time (I was 13 in '85). She used to say that the non stop drum machine for 21 mins was just TOO MUCH One thing I would like if the song ever gets re-mastered is for the BASS to be mixed louder & deeper. It is a great plucking bass line throughout the 12" version that I wish was as loud as say the drum machine! "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

Surprised Prince didn't try to "cash in" with this song 6-8 months ago.
To answer your question: It's a snappy tune Peace&Love bgladthaturfree

I see The War as a kind of sequel to the 12" version of America.
I think he's in a very different state of mind about this country now than he was back in 1985 (or even in 1993, when he last performed it). I doubt we would hear this song again, ESPECIALLY after 9/11.

the 12" is off the staircase. it's as close 2 patriotism as i can get.

I cringe every time I hear it. Unfortunately the awful lyrics just ruin the whole song for me. Shame! I skip right past it always.

Lyrics are crap, but the 12" rocks.
I just wish he'd made a 21 minute version of Paisley Park instead. .

The 12" version is ok but the live 12" version on Small Club is the best - I think it is the first instrumental track - he repeats almost note for note the solos from the 12" - Great Stuff

I thought it was quite UN-AMERICAN and I truly loved it when it hit... I always wondered what other singles he had intended for ATWIAD, based on all of the characters that could have been featured -- when did he bug out on the releases for this album, after the little patriotic black boy? La, la, la

Raspberry Beret = Girl with Apple
Paisley Park = Paisley Park Pop Life = Woman with napkin America = Flag waving boy I count over twenty different characters that could have been featured? At what point do you think WB pulled the plug on single releases for this project La, la, la
