Come appreciation thread

I think this album is underrated, its very good, its funky, brite, playful and bloody well written. Of the 10 jams, only solo and Orgasm don't hold their own. The rest is delightful and highly listenable. Dark and Letitgo must be 2 of his best ever songs. Also "Come" is a welcome return to his falsetto roots and contains alot of his multilayered vocals like on S.O.T..
Come- Enjoyable and very graphic 11 minute opus, lots of horns falsettos and exceptional soul vocals amongst a tale of consensual sex.
Space- Very catchy nonsensical jam with stand out vocals, falsetto and desire driven lyrics.
Pheromone, exceptional falsetto funk attak, with driving beat and overt lyrics " i can c tears heading down towards her smile"
Loose- Not for those with a migraine, but very funky and danceable soul shriek driven jam. Lots of profanity 4 u 2.
Papa- One of his most graphic songs, a use of onomatepoeia and chuild abuse with the message "Dont abuse children, or they turn out like me"
Race A funky rap funk jam, easioly the superior of We March "Cut me, cut u, we both the blood is red"
Dark- the finest soul singing hes done along with Adore, its the tale of a heart broken man, who did evrythin 4 his woman but 2 no avail " She took all my sex and money, She took all my self esteem, She had tha nerve 2 think it was funny, I neva knew a bitch so mean"
Solo- a fizer, Prince tries the aria comes off unfinished and out of place on one of his funkiest and blackest sounding sets.
Letitgo- A pop song with good vocals, bouncing beat, abouting relaxing and destressing. Why it didnt climb higher in the charts is beyond me.
Orgasm a very sexy climax, with the wry dry humour to a hendrix like sols "I love u"

U all should listen 2 it again, it grows on u and curiosity, it knows no shame.

Great, great album - A welcome return to Prince doing a somewhat more restrained album, without the blatant commercial syrup of D&P and the rock-operatic bombast of they prince record. I love the dark, almost cavernous sound the album has - It's very unique. It also works as a killer opener for The Gold Experience - I often spin Come and follow it directly with some TGE stuff, and it's a quality listen.

My faves on Come:

Space
Loose
Dark
Solo
Letitgo

hehe, come is getting more and more love on the org. at first there
was no love for it and now i see appreciation threads for it every
other week. that's great. i've loved this album from the minute it
hit the stores.

it's hard to believe that it's already 11 years now since i called
in sick for school and went out to buy this album, took it home and
sat in my room listening to it with headphones.

11 years. damn. time goes fast.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I remember I had just finished high school and bought Come and the rereleased Black album as a kind of graduation present. My CD has been so worn out now, that it skips through Loose.
I also read a book from 1995 saying "expect this album to more glowingly reassessed in the future"

This was the second Prince CD i bought, after the 3CD best of with b-sides.
I think it's great even if there are no songs that have "hit-single" potential, maybe the closest being Letitgo, but that doesn't have the punch of something like When Doves Cry or even Do Me Baby.
But there are plenty of great songs: the title song, if a little long, has those great horn parts during the chorus, and as always, great vocal harmonies.
Space and Pheromone are cool but it's Loose! with the great guitar solos that make it great. That song should be played in gyms whilst people exercise.
Dark and Letitgo are cool, laid back numbers. I like Dark's sudden change in mood with the "Sunshiiiine" part.
But don't ask me why Orgasm is on there, if I had a guess, it's just to remind you that you're listening to a PRINCE album and the guy's got an ego the size of his hair on the front cover.
Overall, the album's dark atmosphere is a great change from all his other stuff, it's certainly the best of his "contract filler" albums.

Come is brilliant. It was the second album I bought after Purple Rain. For a relative newbie expecting the same style of music, I was shocked!

So shocked I fell in love. mushy It's still one of my favourite's overall.

As with New Power Soul and Musicology, when he released Come, I almost didn't get into it. I was more than halfway through it, and it was alright, but nothing quite memorable. But then I heard Race, with that ticking funk beat, and that got to me. I would pick it up maybe two to three times a week, and listen to it after that and get more and more into it.

Then after hearing Loose and Papa, with their precision feel, and especially the end of Papa, which did like the old Time song I Don't Wanna Leave You did at the end, pointing in a new direction. Also, Dark and Solo are very interestingly placed. Dark is probably his last soul ballad (I like Empty Room and She Gave Her Angels, but those are rock ballads, and the "totally redone phatter joint" version of this song is not up to par on Crystal Ball.) I think as far as Prince's music, it's a B-tier album for sure, but it's one of the better ones.

My favorites are Pheremone, Loose, Papa, Race and Dark, with Solo and Orgasm coming in close.
