Yes of course. But the album must be a concept album like Purple Rain or Sign of the Times.
You can tell about Prince's Future , but his Past is utterly unpredictable

No, he doesn't have it in him anymore. He can only produce number two albums these days, it seems. What a loser.

I hate to say it but when Prince passes away, that almost guarantees a number one album. Unfortunately, so many artists always seem to get their due only after their passing. sad

LOVEandLIGHT

Prince's next album could very well be #1.
Musicology debuted #3 with only one concert added to the sales.
If that one concert hadn't been added, he still would have debuted at #3 on Billboards Top 200 Albums Chart.

So that goes to show that he still is capable of selling a cool 100-200,000 copies in his first week.
The only thing is, he would need to promote, promote, promote and have a killer single...A pop-friendly single!

The song doesn't have to be an instant hit...because alot of artist are releasing shitty lead singles and still go to #1.
With Prince...he's already got the name, his entire career to look back on...how much success and how many hits he's had...People will flock to the stores to buy it...if there is a strong BUZZ!

For example!!!

Premiere the first single on a highly rated show.
Perform the single on a highly rated show.
Release the video to Mtv, VH1, BET and all the other music tv networks -the following week with much hype!

Appear on Mtv T-R-L to air the video.
Throw a big prime time bash and televise it (internet also)...remember the "EMANCIPATION" Broadcast...but before that...go on NBC Dateline with Matt Lauder (an old friend)...Talk about the success of Purple Rain in 1984 and the success of Musicology in 2004...showing clips from the sold out shows and fan mania.

Also talk about his new found happiness in L.A. with wife Manuela...The New Music and the future of Prince.

*Oprah -play 2 new songs and 1 previous hit!
*Good Morning America -Performs new single!
*Dave Letterman -1st time Interview;plus a performance!
*Play some clubs in L.A & NYC (surprise gigs)!
*Jay Leno -Interview & Performance!
*Cover Story for Rolling Stone Magazine!
*Commericials air for the new album on Radio & TV!
*NPGMC Listening Party! (Open to the public)

All this before the album is released and I gurantee a #1 album!

As some have said before, having an album hit #1 isn't about quality it is about PROMOTION. Case in point, Ashlee Simpson's latest album was #1. So, if promoted right Prince could record himself shitting in an echo chamber and it could hit #1.

There's two ways Prince can have a number one album in this day and time.

1. He can resort to tricks to increase his sales like including the price of the new album in his concert ticket.

2. He can strip his music down to a sample over a midtempo hip hop beat. That wouldn't be enough though. These music buyers today don't like an individual look either. He also would have to cut his hair and either be bald or wear it natural and low. Hell, he could wear baseball caps all the time too. He also would need to take off the makeup and heels and put on a damn football jersey and some big-leg jeans and sneakers. In other words, look like all the other fools.

It wouldn't matter if Prince went in the vault and released the best album he has. These music buyers today have no taste and they wouldn't buy it.

i agree with all of the above.

when i was watching the American Music Awards the other evening, i was unfortunately again reminded of how interchangeable so much of today's music is -- sounds alike, the 'artists' in most of the various genres all look/dress the same as the *other* artists in that genre. no originality. yet the record companies keep cranking out these lame, fabricated artists and these boring, retread tunes continue to make the charts. and the public keeps eating it up.

He could definately have another #1 album, but only if it was an album critics could really give glowing reviews to and if a buzz was created about the album beforehand through clever promotion.

But, I think only in the 1st week of sales. He's doubtful to have the sort of album or fan-base now where an album could creep up the charts to number 1. A lot of albums these days premiere at number 1 through hype, then quickly drop.

It's still difficult. In the UK, there was a lot of pre-release hype about Kate Bush's first new release for years - but it only got to number 3 here, I think...

Madonna has no problem doing it, though. By staying constantly commercial, she has maintained a huge fanbase by not scaring them off with music that is too challenging.

I doubt it, but I hope so. All Prince really needs is another rock single like Lets Go Crazy. But he's too smitten with this jazz/funk stuff now.
