Nah, I don't think it was awful either. The book tells such a marvelous story that it makes it difficult even for the best director to get the most moving elemts across, let alone Spike Lee. I loved the performances, but I just couldn't fall in love with the movie as a whole.

Keep in mind that Spike had a lot of people against him and still pulled it off about as well as anyone else could have. From what I understand, the Nation of Islam told him straight up to be careful of what he says about Elijah Muhammad and the theories surrounding Malcolm's assassination. Tons of people did NOT want that movie made at all. Choosing Denzel (due to his darker complexion) as the lead was also debated heavily.

I could have done without the whole "I am Malcolm X." ending, but it didn't taint my view of the film overall.

My point is, Spike did succeed in changing the public's perception of Malcolm X. with the film. I'm sure it got people to read the autobiography and other books written on him and at least see him in a different light. Most people have a lot of misguided perceptions about him.

As much as I love Spike's Malcolm X film and think of it as a masterpiece, I am afraid to say that the Autobiography Of Malcolm X is better.

I find that most of the time I prefer "the book" to "the movie." shrug
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
