the 'one' girl in the Kiss video is, in actuality, two different women.

the woman dancing is Monique Mannen. the other woman shown in closeup a few times, i don't know what her name is. shrug

i read an article once where one of those two women from the video (don't know which one) said that Prince wanted her wearing a veil because he thought she had a gorgeous body but a not so great face, and when shooting for the video was over Prince sent her the veil as a gift and she didn't know how quite to take that gesture...

Monique Mannen also played Monique Mo-Freak in Spike Lee's school Daze.

Here is a page of her other movie credits

All of the close ups of the girl were of Wendy Melvoin's twin sister Susannah Melvoin. I'm sure about that, but that's what I heard.

Susannah wasn't in the Kiss video. Wendy was obviously in the vid, but Susannah was not.

NO no. I'm not talking about the close-ups of the girl playing the guitar. I know that was Wendy. I'm talking about the close-ups of the girl in the veil. When dancing far away in full body shots it was a light skinned Black woman named Monique Mannen, but up close, the waist on up, it was Susannah with her hair tied back with sunshades and a veil on.

confuse

with all due respect (i honestly don't mean to sound rude or anything) where on earth did you hear that bit of misinformation? that woman is so clearly *NOT* Susannah. she doesn't even remotely resemble Susannah.

do you have anywhere i could go to that verifies it to be Susannah? because unless i see some hard, definite proof of it being she, i stand by my position that it is NOT her. i have never, ever EVER heard this before and, like i said, that woman looks absolutely *nothing* like her.

I said in my first post, that I didn't know if it was true. I just heard it on some TV show back in 1987 or 1988.

According to IMDB this same girl played the "Boring Girl" in Coming to America. I'm guessing it was the scene in the club where they meet alot of women and she won't shut up and Eddie and Arsenio are falling asleep. If I remember correctly, she was pretty attractive. I'm sure he wanted the veil for effect, not because the girl was ugly.

That chick, if it was her, was gorgeous! Mouthy, but quite the looker. BTW, I doubt the story about Prince calling the dancer, whomever she was, ugly too. Just doesn't seem to be his style. I think he wouldn't say anything rather than insult someone.

Huh??? Oh my god one girl told us a story about Prince embarrassing Carmen on a night out in front of everyone and making her cry by saying she was getting fat! Prince can be nasty expecialy to women sometimes.

There have been posts on the org about this before and I'm pretty sure they said who the other woman was (in the close ups). and that it was 2 women.

Although I always thought the woman in shades kind of did look like Susannah.

I also heard a rumour on here that it's actually not Wendy playing guitar but Susannah, and that the twins plays "switcheraoo" for the video. Don't know if that's true either. I guess only Wendy and Susannah would know for sure smile

Fat is one thing. But calling someone ugly is a different story altogether. Maybe, I don't know. But seems kinda heavy-handed to me. And if Prince is nasty to women, how in the hell does he get so many of them? This is more a question about female psychology than about Prince. Why do women routinely pair up with guys who treat them like trash? Sure, they bitch about the guy but they remain by his side. Crazy, man. Conversely, the nice guy receives a lot of compliments from women but that's all. What's the incentive here?

The reasons about why women love abusive men could be argued till everyone is blue in the face. I have no idea what Prince is like now with women but in the past he sure seemed abusive. Not physicaly but emotionaly. Even musicians who have worked with him say he kinda uses negative renforcement. I think Prince learned early on that nice guys finnish last.

You got that right. The only benefit to being a nice guy is people call you a nice guy. Other than that, nothing. Nice-ness, more often than not, is considered an invitationt to exploitation. Dont' forget Prince is also rather short for a man. So I"m sure there's a little bit of that Napoleon complex going on.

Well, he is also not nice in business it looks like. I'm sure dealing with him in that aspect he is ruthless. biggrin

But being a beautiful person inside is what matters with me. For any lasting relationship being caring is important. Women who put up with abusive men usually their relationship burns out or the woman is extremley misrable. Who wants to live life like that?

i agree. i'm surprised anyone would think Prince wouldn't insult someone's appearance. he might not do such a thing often, i wouldn't know, but he definitely has it in him to be mean like that when he wants to.

at one of the Celebrations Prince basically called Matt Fink fat in front of everybody. IIRC, Rosie Gaines has herself said that Prince would make direct and indirect derogatory comments about her weight/looks which made her feel bad. and at a concert in recent years, in front of the entire audience, Prince insulted some random girl's looks with a comment like "I wouldn't be seen sitting with a chick like her" or something like that. he didn't need to make any remarks about any of those people, he couldn't just kept his opinions to himself.

i also heard he made some less than sensitive remarks about Mayte's appearace when they were together.

i love Prince and he's got a lot of good qualities, but he can mean sometimes, especially regarding looks.

thumbs up! Right on. Yes I don't see what he would gain by making people uncomfortable about their weight, looks.ect.

Maybe he has such low self esteen and is so hyper sensitve about his appearence that he gets some kick out of pointing out others less than perfect qualities. Opening his mouth and drawing attention to them like that says that he is just very insecure with himself.

And P.S. Yes calling women fat is just as bad as calling her butt ugly! Women are as sensitive about their weight as men are sensitve about their height. And yes EVERY man I know that is not over six feet tall is pretty sensitive about his height. biggrin

I think to a large extent, we're all influenced by society. To the extent the world is shallow, most of us follow suit. We all have our vices, warts and moral frailties. What separates the good person from the bad, however, is character. Good people can be just as cold and callous as anyone else. But they make an effort not to be. The bad person, for the most part, just isn't thinking. He just goes with the flow of his arbitrary emotions. I find this is often the case with many musicians -- certainly not all. Their feelings are paramount and a perceived pipeline to creativity. I wouldn't be surprised if Prince has fallen in this category ocassionally.

YOu make an excellent point, Z. The entertainmment industry isn't known for it's spiritual depth. Rather, it thrives on superficiality. It's the most shallow busiess around. Britney Spears owe her success to her looks. Great looks often equals great money. Vanity couldn't sing worth a damn. But she looked great. She even got a record deal from Motown. They knew that girl couldn't sing. But it was the image, they wanted. Maybe Prince was just thinking along these lines. Or maybe he was just rude. God knows I can be wrong.
