Jimmy Jam takes Flyte to L.A.

Jon Bream, Star Tribune
May 13, 2004

The Timberwolves' most visible fan, Grammy-winning producer Jimmy Jam, won't be visible much longer.

This week, Jam invited Twin Cities friends to a "good-bye party" May 22 as he prepares to move to Los Angeles this summer with his wife, Lisa Harris, and their three children. He and his business partner, Terry Lewis -- who have produced more No. 1 hits than anyone except Beatles producer George Martin -- have put their Flyte Tyme Studios in Edina up for sale and are building a new studio in L.A.

"Whether people got to work at Flyte Tyme or not, just knowing they were here made us more of a big city," Twin Cities producer Bobby Z said. "It's a sad loss."

A spokeswoman said Jam was unavailable Wednesday to comment; he was in Sacramento to attend the Wolves playoff game.

"I've spent 44 winters here," Jam told the Star Tribune in January. "Lisa told me two or three years ago, 'If it wasn't for the Wolves, you know you'd get out of here.' I said, 'You're probably right.' I love my Wolves. That's the thing that makes winter tolerable."

For several years, Jam has divided his time between the Twin Cities and Los Angeles, maintaining homes in both cities. His family has spent the past few summers in L.A., his wife's hometown; their home on Lake Minnetonka is now for sale. Lewis moved to Malibu, Calif., in November 2002 but maintains a Twin Cities residence.

After recording 16 No. 1 pop hits and 25 No. 1 R & B hits in the Twin Cities with Janet Jackson, Usher, Boyz II Men and others, Jam and Lewis have shifted their base to the West Coast. Since February 2003, they have rented space at Village Recorders, a legendary studio in Santa Monica, Calif., where they recorded Jackson's new CD, "Damita Jo." Meanwhile, construction continues on a new studio in Santa Monica called Flyte Tyme West, which is expected to open this summer.

In a recent interview, Lewis said a changing climate in the music industry prompted the move. Flyte Tyme has focused more on film soundtracks -- including last year's hit "The Fighting Temptations" -- and advertising jingles.
"In those industries, it's out of sight, out of mind," Lewis said. "You have to be available to people."

Moreover, he said, being in the Twin Cities had become a liability, especially after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when many companies curtailed discretionary travel. "What became a very good mystique for us, being in Minneapolis, actually started to work against us because we were off the beaten path," Lewis said. "Most artists and music people come [to L.A.] once a month anyway."

Although a private studio, Flyte Tyme has been a major force in the Twin Cities music business, and the studio's closing will take some shine off the scene's stature.

Jam and Lewis won musical credibility for Minneapolis and prompted people from all over the country to move here, said Bobby Z, the former drummer for Prince who produces recordings regularly at Echo Bay Studio in New Hope.

The loss of Flyte Tyme will have "a big impact artistically and financially," said Sounds of Blackness leader Gary Hines, who was on the Flyte Tyme staff in the early 1990s and whose group recorded there. "The good news is the quality and direction of the legacy they established will be a positive ripple effect for years to come."

how many times must I say this...

Paisley Park is alive, people. The studio rooms have all been massively upgraded, and I know one of the people who did the work. I saw the pics of what was done, and I was distantly involved with this... Nuff said. Can't say more.

i don't think she's angry at the brotha...she's a frickin gossip columnist in a town where there really ain't a whole lot to gossip about, except the local news reporters and prince. shrug

(That was the first time I have ever typed in Princebonics. Somebody alert CJ!)

lol

-----
I am sorry I live in WDC and we have very few famous people here just congressmen and senators but, no one person takes up the local gossip here they why P does in the Tribune.

I don't think she writes about him because she is fan and writing that 2 people were in the Theater when according to others there was more than that just shows she is not one for checking the facts when it comes to P.

In addtion, nothing weird about building a new house as the whole country is in
redevelopment mode.

well, i don't know...don't you think it's awful petty of her to write that end bit about only two people showing up for the midnight movie of SOTT? i think she was really reaching when she wrote that. i was almost kind of just barely thinking she'd written a halfway decent gossip column this time, then i read that...

And even perfaced it with Bad sign for Prince? If this were a movie Premiere or somthing...that I could see. But for a movie that came out almost 2 decades ago showing at midnight in a town where I'm sure quite a few folks have it on VHS or DVD boot, it aint saying all that much...let alone that it's bad for Prince.

Amen to that. Prince nerds hate CJ so much and she writes about him maybe once every two months.

seems like more than that...and she sure writes more dirt about him than anyone else these days, not to mention her little hip replacement rumor that took off like wildfire recently.

i don't have a problem with someone writing gossip about prince...i have a problem with gossip columnists who obviously has an axe to grind with him taking potshots at him in the press. as a writer, i think that's just cheap...there are better ways to air your issues with someone.

nod

I've always felt from the vibe of her writtings that her beef with Prince is personal. I don't know what he did to her but girlfriend has made it her mission to stick it to him every chance she gets. That can't be good for her mental well-being. disbelief

Maybe it'll sink in one day, that no matter what she writes, Prince is still going to be Prince and folks like me are still going to love him. Just...Letitgo!!!

look, if fans aren't willing to line up at a hard-to-find apartment building on the north side of chicago in mid-november early on a saturday morning to see a prince film that came out in 1986 and didn't even do well back then, well...it's a pretty clear indicator to me!!!

Didn't the whole CJ - Prince beef start when she wasn't given preferential treatment at one of his parties at Paisley Park? Actually, I guess it's pretty much a one sided beef, since, with the exception of Billy Jack Bitch, Prince probably doesn't give her a second thought.
In any case, CJ seems to make things more ominous than they really are. And that has everything to do with her and nothing to do with Prince.

Prince demolishes his Chanhassen house
C.J., Star Tribune

Last update: November 7, 2005 at 9:29 PM

Prince has demolished his primary residence in Chanhassen.

"I know somebody obtained a demolition permit," Chanhassen building official Steve Torell said Monday. "I saw [the house] earlier last week. I wasn't here Friday, so I don't know if it's down or not, yet. It is tough to see back there."

Sunday I could not see the house but did notice construction vehicles on the property. I went to check it out after receiving this anonymous e-mail on Saturday: "What purple wonder multimillionaire is destroying his current home to build a new house. What purple wonder decided to fire his entire security staff (due to the construction) with no notice and paid not one thin dime of severance, as we enter the holidays!" The e-mail claims some of those fired have worked for Prince for 20 years. That's hard to believe, because he doesn't keep people around that long.

Another claim is not borne out by city records. Torell said no permit had been taken out to build another home there.

In spring 2003, Prince demolished another Chanhassen property, the famous Purple House on Lake Riley, where he once lived and where his father, John L. Nelson, lived out his final days.

The demolition of the primary residence is probably not that unexpected, given how fast Chanhassen is growing.

Where once there was no development near the property, Prince can run across more neighbors and lots more traffic between there and Paisley Park, which is still standing.

A bad sign for Prince?

In other Prince news, showing of his "Sign of the Times" movie was far from a sellout Saturday. It was a special feature of the City Pages Documentary Film Festival, but showing it at midnight probably didn't help the numbers. At 11:15 p.m. there were two people in the Uptown Theater.

[Note: While it's true the theater was far from sold out, there was a healthy crowd by showtime.]

Um..... Isn't 'this OLD news?????
I recall hearing about him tearing down the Chanhassen house MONTHS ago.. could of even been last year???!!
This would be VERY easy to check out..
Come on Minnesota Orgers... go take a look.. now that the leaves are down, you CAN see back there very well.....
I have alot of pictures of this house and video tape of this house from a few years back

He tore down the PURPLE house in Chanhassen long ago but the formerly yellow (it was painted brown a few years ago) house was still standing until recently.
