Prince and Janet Jackson

Why does it seem that Prince... how can I say, doesn't care too much for her?
Does Jimmy Jam and Terry have anything to do with it?
Why did Prince only recognize her as "genius' sister"....nothing else?
And they should have worked together at least once.

It seems he silked thru her...I mean, he worked with some of the most popular women icons of the 80's...why was she excluded, you know?

I'm not really a big fan of Janet, but this is something I've wondered.

What do you think?

I heard one time that Prince wanted to work with Janet. He said he like her. That she had a lot of talent. But nothing ever materialised from this.

On the other hand I also heard that Joe Jackson said to Jam and Lewis not tp have her sounding like Prince because he did not like Prince. wink

Yes, I remember that from Joe. On the Icon program. He's a hater! lol
Anyhoo, where did you get that other info from? That he likes her and whatnot.
I couldn't imagine her declining. But who knows? shrug

I read it in an article that was in , I believe, the
Right On! magazine years ago when Janet was burning up the charts.

If I can find it, I'll post it. lol

I read somewhere that "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" was written as a duet with Prince. Supposedly, that really low Janet part was supposed to be sung by the little purple man himself. Not sure if this is true, or if this is just a story based on the MJ/Prince "Bad" duet that never materialized, but...

janet needs to sing in that low register again...her voice sounds much fuller...

And what about the nude tour in Tokio. The band starts What have you done for me lately. Prince asking: "who wrote that?"

well? who wrote that?

jimmy, terry and janet..

and its kinda pathetic for prince to make that statement after all the "borrowing" of sounds he did..the fact that he had jesse record solos for one of the times albums and then re-recorded them with him playing identically speaks volumes.

I've always wanted Prince to play guitar on a Janet song. I can't imagine them both singing on the same song.

Ah, that would be cool if Love Will Never Do (Without U) really was meant as a duo for her and him.
Well, I suppose there's still time for them to work together biggrin

rolleyes right.

Hmmm that would have been cool. But the song is cool just by itself but I can definatly see Prince singing along on that song.

They actually borrowed the synth line in what have you done for me lately from a break in Prince's Sexy Dancer, a much earlier release.

Listen to them both.

SO thats what he was referring to.

Maybe he was just letting people know that it was a sample of his music. It always reminded me of the break in long version of Lets Go Crazy. Back then a lot of Jam & Lewis' songs (Janet, Cherelle, Alexander O'Neal and SOS Band) sounded like Prince/The Time. They paid a lot of homage 2 Prince Or maybe all along he was ghost writing (or help write)4 some Jam & Lewis, Andre Cymone (Jody Watley) and Jesse Johnson's (TaMara & The Seen, Da Krash) groups. It's not hard 2 believe. If U listen 2 those songs again, it's very possible!

or maybe those artist originated the soundbites and took them back...its not hard to believe knowing how much prince tried to claim ownership for other peoples's stuff...

why else wouldnt prince get a sampling credit? jam and lewis have always been upfront when they sampled.

What synth line are you talking about?

The one at 2:38 into the song? ? it's kinda similar but not the same.

or the riffs at about 1:11??? they are not the same either.

There probably using the same chord or 2in both songs buta lot of funk songs use the same basic minor 7th chord.

If anything, the piano solo towards the end sounds a bit like the piano riffing Jimmy Jam does on the long version of What Have you Done?

Then why else would Prince say "who wrote this", if he wasn't talking about himself. If they were taking back their soundbites, what would be the purpose of Prince bringing it up at his concert

and before anyone starts calling me a prince hater or somehow tie this discussion into my love for all things wendy and lisa:

the above statements made by sosgemini should not be interpreted as a bash on prince's artistic ability..the man is a musical geniuse...he deserves a place in musical history with all the other greats.....

But can someone please check my earlier post and explain how it comes from Sexy Dancer?

I've Never heard that about Jesse playing the parts, and then Prince playing them identically. Where did you get that piece of info? I wouldn't consider that common knowledge.

Prince's sense of humour gets lost on a lot of people. Many times he's the only one laughing.
