Prince's huge US Dance Hits success UPDATED It's possible that Prince may have written more dance hits than any other artist whose songs appear on this chart. He had at least 29 Top-10 dance hits, if you don't include the Around the World in a Day album which reached #8 on this mostly singles chart. (Madonna, followed by Janet Jackson, hold the most number of dance hits by a performer).
#2 "I Wanna Be Your Lover" & "Sexy Dancer" charted together #5 "Uptown" "Dirty Mind" & "Head" all charted together #1 6-weeks "Controversy" & "Let's Work" together #1 4-weeks "Nasty Girl" (written by Prince -- Vanity 6) #1 2-weeks "1999" (knocked "Nasty Girl" out of top spot) #61 "Little Red Corvette" #52 "Let's Pretend We're Married" #1 6-weeks "When Doves Cry" & "17 Days" together #1 1-week "Let's Go Crazy" & "Erotic City" together #50 "I Would Die 4 U" #1 3-weeks "I Feel 4 U" (written by Prince -- Chaka Khan) #1 2-weeks "The Glamourous Life" (written by Prince -- Sheila E.) ?? "The Bird" (co-written by Prince -- The Time) ?? "Jungle Love" (co-written by Prince -- The Time) ?? "The Belle of St. Mark" (written by Prince -- Sheila E.) #8 Around the World in a Day -- the whole album #4 "Raspberry Beret" & "She's Always In My Hair" together #5 "Pop Life" & "Hello" together #1 1-week "Sugar Walls" (written by Prince -- Sheena Easton) #1 2-weeks "A Love Bizarre" (written by Prince -- Sheila E.) #1 2-weeks "Kiss" #11 "Mountains" #21 "Anotherloverholenyohead" & "Girls & Boys" together #2 "Sign O' The Times" #4 "I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man" & "Hot Thing" together #22 "Alphabet Street" ?? "Kiss" (written by Prince -- Art of Noise w/ Tom Jones) #1 1-week "Batdance" #45 "Partyman" #9 "Thieves in the Temple" ?? "Pray" (based on "When Doves Cry" by Prince -- MC Hammer) ?? "Jerk Out" (written by Prince -- The Time) ?? "Round and Round" (written by Prince -- Tevin Campbell) #1 1-week "Gett Off" #9 "My Name is Prince" ?? "Nasty Girl" (written by Prince -- Inaya Day, 2005) all other Prince songs supposedly didn't make the dance charts. sorry, i couldn't find any dance chart info on songs Prince wrote for The Time, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Patti Labelle, Madhouse ("6" reached #5 on R&B), Mazarati, Mavis Staples, Carmen Electra, and others -- if i do, i'll add to this list. i put ?? next to those that i believe DID make the list -- i just don't have the numbers. anyone wanna fill 'em in?? Otherwise you would have to James Brown 'co-wrote' all those hip-hop songs that lifted his yelps and drums.

but "pray" so heavily samples "when doves cry" that there'd be no "pray" without it
