That's an unsubstantiated rumour. People that have researched it say that Prince did NOT write the song, in fact Prince just heard the jingle, and recorded his own song using it as the basis, just for his own enjoyment.

I tend to believe this latter view, since Prince has never claimed the song and you would have thought he would have by now.

please allow me to set the record straight...My name is Peter Cofield
and I composed the uh huh song for diet pepsi in 1990...I wrote the tune and
collborated on the lyrics with Al Merrin who worked for the agency involved..
Prince heard the tune with Ray singing it and then decided to his own"real"
song...any ordinary google search would substantiate this ..or any inquiry to
pepsico inc...thanks Peter

You're Peter Cofield? Uh-huh!

In any case, Prince's impersonation of Ray's vocal style is brilliant!

Well, if you ARE Peter Cofield (and let's face it, anyone can create a new org name from fresh to prove their point!) You must be loaded, since the legend went that Prince earned around $7 million for that jingle, so did you?! biggrin

The operative word is"legend" No one pays a celebrity for a re-write of what already exists...let alone 7 million...I assure you as a writer of many jingles
over the years...the compensation isn't close...the vocals from the ray charles
spots were sampled into prince's stellar work..it should have been released..
then I might have made some money..thanksPC

I never actually believed Prince would have been paid 7 million to write the original tune, but saying that, if you wrote it, then you must have got some royalties out of the actual ad? Or is it just a one-off payment with ad tunes?

So I understand are you saying if Prince had sampled the vocals into his version and released it, that way you might have made some decent money out of it.

I would ask, since Prince's song 'Uh-huh' remains unreleased, when did you find out about the song, it sounds like you have heard it, and what do you think about Prince 'using' your tune? Are you flattered or annoyed? Also, I don't believe Ray Charles ever recorded a full-length version of the song - which you would have thought he would have since it was so popular at the time.

The money in advertising music is accumulated through residual payments from
singing, playing an instrument, arranging and orchestrating..the fee for a composition is a one time deal that isn't very flattering so you hope for a long run to collect these residuals...Yes they pay writers royalties but that again does not add up to alot if a spot doesn't run a long time. I heard his song many
years ago when his attorneys presented it to us.. they were then to go to the powers that be for clearance...guess that didn't happen but we were absolutely thrilled
with the song he did..Oh well...anyway I was turned on to this site by a
colleague who thought you guys may like to know about this..thanks PC

Thanks for sharing your insight! Hopefully it will help to put this particular Prince myth to bed - however, from experience, I know that on the Org it is only a matter of time before some fan starts a new thread about how Prince wrote Uh-huh for Ray Charles and Pepsi and received $7 million... And then off we go again...

So that is Ray singing, on the intro of the song? No wonder I thought Prince's impersonation was great... eek

EDIT: No, wait a minute, I just listened to it again...that's definitely Prince!
And he's doing a damn good job!

Exactly. Just as it always has sounded since "Yellow". I wonder if it's sampled from a videotape of the actual commercial....

Ah, ok...

It's not that obvious though, Prince is clearly trying to sound like Ray, at least on the intro.

Anyway, I liked the other Pepsi commercial better, the one where they try to fool Ray with a Coca-Cola can...
"Alright, now who's the wise guy?"

It's also kind of interesting that Ray Charles did commercials for Coca-Cola in the 60's...and Pepsi in the 90's...

He is doing a nice job of imitating Ray. He and Jamie Fox should do a skit.
