Prince Songs - Covers

Who do you think has done the best job with covering a Prince song?

I was just listening to T.L.C. and I love their version of "If I was your girlfriend".

It sounds like on some of P's unreleased stuff where he does a guide track vocal version and then the artist that he gives the track to does the same thing on their version and puts it on their album.

Thats what T.L.C.(Tboz on this track) sounds like. She sings it in the same way he did and for as low as her voice is did an amazing job. I also really like their version of the audio track. The bass sounds totally funky and turned up on it along with the drum programming.

I know of two other pretty good ones also: Chaka Khan with I feel for you and Sinead with Nothing Compares 2 U.

Can anyone else think of some good ones?
"Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

Self-"Gotta Stop (Messin' About)".

If Prince's 'New master' versions of his back catalogue sounded like this, I could ask 4 no more...Well, aside from new new music.

Dump(dude from Yo La Tango) released a stellar tribute CD titled "That Skinny Motherfucker With The High Voice" which I really dig.

Right now I'm playing the shit out of Purple Rain by the Teddy Bears... very cool.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

RealMusician

Jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman did a version of "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" (around 1998 I think, on the album "Timeless tales for changing times"), where he imitates Prince's vocal phrasing on his tenor sax - down to the smallest details! It's amazing, and it sounds great even if you didn't know the song.

The Op:l Bastards version is more fun though.

The Bob Belden "Prince-jazz" CDs have a couple of decent ones, mainly the ones involving Jimi Tunnel. Ani DiFranco's live cover of "When You Were Mine" (with Maceo Parker) is the best I've heard. She slows it down to beautiful ballad. Recommended downloading from a filesharing application of your choice.
