It only matters to those who live in the past. Prince has always done his own music, he only needs bands for live stuff, and the Revolution couldn't hold a candle to his latest bandmates, musically speaking. Thank you! I liked the Revolution at the time but I'm certainly not sitting here pining away for them and I doubt the general public is either. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I don't think anyone really cares about the groups that back Prince. It's really Prince that everyone is interested in.

i think if a prince & the revolution "reunion album" ACTUALLY happened, it would consist of prince writing and recording the overwhelming majority of the record as he always did/does, with maybe a riff from dr. fink here or some rhythm or acoustic guitar from wendy there and some backing vocals by the girls in several songs, and maybe - MAYBE - one or two songs written with wendy & lisa with substantial contributions from them in the recording. beyond that, i'm sure it would be all prince, with some folks from the latest incarnation of NPG popping up, and probably a few new musicians collaborating. realistically speaking, that's how i see it playing out.

The general public could care less if Prince and the Revolution reunite. Except for a song or two, they dumped Prince after "Purple Rain". If Prince and the Revolution were to reunite and get back to the sound they had on the "1999" and "Purple Rain" albums, some of the old fans and some of the old general public would come back. It still might be a flop though because Prince has waited too late. A lot of those old fans are doing the dull "wife, kids, dog, and station wagon" bit.
The new, younger general public (the ones that are buying CDs these days) could care less unless he was doing some hip hop bullshit. Andy is a four letter word.

When I first started listening to Prince and until I came to the .org, I never really gave Prince's band members a second thought. He had to have a band because there is no way he could do it all live like he did in the studio. It was (and overall still is) all about Prince as far as I'm concerned.
Since then, I have learned so much about how others have been a part of his career, learned a bit more about them as musicians and come to respect them, but to me, they are still supporting players. Some of those supporting players I like better than others. During the phase of "Prince and The Revolution" it wasn't so much about who Wendy and Lisa were or Dr. Fink, hell, I don't even remember who the other members were. It was about the spirit of the music. Free, freaky, hot, sweaty, fuck you, fun. Alot has changed since then. Prince would have us believe he's grown more mature and given up his sinful ways. Whatever the reason, the spirit is not the same. And in the end I think he's not entitled to call himself "The Revolution" at this time. Okay, rambling over. I'm firmly planted in denial

Prince has always done his own music, he only needs bands for live stuff, and the Revolution couldn't hold a candle to his latest bandmates, musically speaking. There's more to being a band than having excellent musicians. Prince is always influenced by those surrounding him and in that regard The Revolution was very important to the music he released at that time. As for the original question; I think if The Revolution would tour with Prince it would be based on pure nostalgia which, believe it or not, is the most important factor behind the success of Prince's Musicology tour. Along with a new album and most importantly, a new single with a decent video I think it could be a huge thing. What Prince would have to remember is to keep it light. No political or quasi-religious nonsense on poppy songs. Repo Man's got all night, every night.

No political or quasi-religious nonsense on poppy songs. I like this explanation. I think the chemistry of the band heavily influenced the Revolution material whether Prince was doing the majority of the songwriting or not. With a band situation there's a big difference between the song you write and the one you record. The Revolution to me had the most interesting influences on Prince. But what we might be overlooking is that I just don't think the band got along that well. That could be the reason for the breakup (besides Prince's meathead tendancies) as well as their refusing to get back together. Same with The Police. Sure they did some amazing things together but who wants to willingly sibject themselves to a toxic working environment when they don't have to, except for the remaining original members of Metallica? As for public expectations, I doubt anyone is thinking about it, but if it happens and the music is good, there's a strong nostalgia factor that would spark interest in a reunion.
