Who puts on the best tour? IN the 80's there were about 4 or 5 megaartists. They toured the world and changed the history of music forever.
Michael Jackson Prince Madonna Janet(Jackson) &Tina Turner. You can take Tina out if you want and even put George Michael in. But onstage it's really who is number 1 after Michael. Knowing this is a Prince forum more of you are gonna go for The Artist. He dances, james, and make syou move while onstage but really no one can put a set together liek Michael. I guess I have to give them their own categories. When it comes to being state of the art with pyro, lasers and the latest wizardry hands down it goes to MIchael Jackson. WHen it comes to being "theatrical"and having changing sets it goes to Madonna, atleast on her Blonde Ambition tour. I've seen much of her tours accept Re-invention. She hasn't toured Texas in 15 years, wonder why. Then there'smoving parts. Tina and Janet came pretty close when it came to moving parts. They haven't had much prior but their last tours had what was basically a tranformable stage. Janet I think wins at that category. While not the most hi-tech and state of the art Tina still manages to dazzle onstage. Then there's our boy Prince. Prince is one of the hardest to describe artists. You never know if he's gonna come out with an array of lights or just him and a microphone. Accept for maybe the Purple Rain Tour Prince isn't very much for hi-tech andoff the wall staging. He's more extravagant in decor. He may not have a million lights, fireworks, and lasers spoting all over the house but he always looks sharp and so does his set. He's the master at the art of making his set look fabulus without spending lots of money and lighting and fancy equipment. Take the Jam Of The Year our.....he added a simple curtain to give it a Prince feel. I mentioned George Michael, I don't much abouth is stage shows. ANd in the 90s we had Mariah Carrey. She's more a pop idol and doesn't get into rock like Tina. And perhaps not a megastar but big Whitney Houston. Not all about the lasers and pyro she did put on a state of the art show in the early 90s. I don't know who you feel but you put your favorite artists onstage. Working up a purple sweat.

I think Prince is the best and this is why. Micheal is a very talented live performer but and this is the difference. ITS THE SAME DAMN SHOW. I have seen Victory, Live from Bucharest and another show all from different CD's respectively Thriller, Bad and Dangerous. He does the same songs same choreography, same vocal licks you name it. Hell after the Victory tour Micheal replaced the jackson five with five backup singer/dancers that do the exact same dance moves and harmonies as the Jackson 5. Now don't get me wrong its highly entertaining and it does have its legacy behind it but with Prince you might not get the same show night to night let alone tour to tour. Prince is by far the better live performer. I would easily put him up their with Cab Calloway and Sammy Davis Jr. as an entertainer. Another thing before you go throwing Mike above Prince. He (Micheal) has developed the nasty habit of Lip Synching now a days and that aint cool. Prince only lip syncs if he is made to ie the world music awards a few years ago. depends on what you are looking for.
want something that's recreation of the videos and dances you saw on MTV and feel in love with. See Janet or Michael want something theatrical and that will leave going hhhhmm what could she do to top this see Madonna. want something that's going to be musically spot on and diverse see Prince. it all really depends on what you want in your shows. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

All Michael Jackson's tours are the same. He doesn't mix things up much. Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

That's the thing about being a big artists, you have signature style. One look and someone says "ahh this was done by him/her (Michael,Prince, Madonna, Janet).". Working up a purple sweat.

Tina's was burnt at the start of the 80's. Nobody knew Madonna yet. Janet was chillin' at Havenhurst. Prince wasn't headlining big shows yet. The Jacksons were doing Truimph in U.S Arenas. The Truimph Tour was dope, better than Victory which was underwhelimg. I say Prince is the best though and I woulda love to see P on a small stage back in the day, but P didn't beat the Jacksons until his ass got money and fame. Big Stage!!!

It was alright, too much pyro. Truimph was more energy from what I've seen on tape. I saw victory from the nose bleeds..... [Edited 10/3/05 20:56pm]

shoot me for saying this but Barbara Streisand and Bette Milder put on hellofa shows....
old school talent brought to a new generation.....as time passes we will loose these types of performers...people who could change a set-list..sing the standards..sing modern music..use an orchestra.....actually engage an audience with talk....wrap an audience around them by extending a hand out and holding their breath until the hand drops.... sade is the closest of todays performers to convey that same style of performance...one that was the trademark of ella, frank sinatra, judy garland..... its an old school style...almost vaudeville...but one that i personally think deserves to be kept in our culture....if sandra bernhardt actually had a decent voice i would be hopeful that the style would remain...or if sade was more of an actress and enjoyed stage theatrics...but as of right now im afraid its a dead genre of stage performance... and its a sad thing for american culture... OMG SOS... I totally forgot about the orginal Divine Miss M. She is truely a legendary live perfomer. And i get sick of the people who say if you don't write the songs you aren't an artist. Bette is probably one of the greatest vocal artist of her era. I love her. And her shows are second to none. Though it's the same characters most of the time she always makes them fresh. Oh Miss M. There would be Madonna without her antics of the 70s. and it always amazes me that she doesn't sell alot of records but her shows always always sell out. Triumph was better than Victory.....whooaa what drugs are you on? I think most Jackson fans who are not easily swayed by monsters and special effects (courtesy of my man Don King) would pick the Triumph tour over Victory...The Victory tour was indeed a mess...and worst, it didn't meet up to MJ's "Thriller" era of material...Seriously, I was there...And for the record, Prince didn't start kicking MJ's ass on the stage until the Parade shows...From then on, MJ was a step below P, since all the man did was recycled his set list (sorry Mike)...With that said, in his prime, MJ was one of the most gifted performers of his era, and at times the best.... I saw MJ on his Bad tour at Leeds Roundhay Park (UK). Despite loving Prince, it remains the single best concert I have ever seen. Roundhay Park is just... a park, they plumped the show down in a slight football-field like depression in an open part of the ground. It really was like a spaceship and an alien had come to visit. The organisation was incredible, there were helicopters overhead, they'd even sprayed something on the grass so that it was non-slip. A hundred thousand people went, you could not see anything but people upto the trees in the distance, which themselves had people hanging out of them to get a free look.
And the performance delivered everything you asked for. It was amazing seeing MJ running all over the stage for 2 hours sweating his ass off like a normal human being. The best dancing I have ever seen, the best vocal performance and the best light show and video screens. Saying all that, these days I'd rather see Prince of course - he's just more diverse and interesting.

Me too. I would much rather hear real music than watch Janet lip-sync her way through her concert or Madonna doing Yoga through hers. If concerts were cheap, I wouldn't care, I'd see everyone live, but given how expensive they are, I want to hear real music and real singing. So my answer is Prince!!! [Edited 10/4/05 6:59am]

Madonna Janet(Jackson) I'm not a fan of the guy but Bruce Springsteen's 1980's concerts blow each and every one of the above mentioned out of the water, the only great performers/musicians that were mentioned above were Prince and Tina Turner... But then again I'm into musicians not lipsynchers and "dancing" (I use that word very lightly with these products) acts... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O

In defense of Madonna, who I would argue is a great performer and entertainer, I wouldn't put her in the category of lip synching There was that whole thing where Elton John accused her of lip synching on her last tour, but it turned out she didn't and he later apologised. And I've heard several of her other tours and they are live throughout.

I agree 100%. I saw Dolly many years ago and she was fantastic. She's a great song writer, performer and storyteller. I was a bit shocked when I saw her on Larry King the other night though. She looks awful. She has so much botox/collagen in her lips, they barely look human. I thought she looked like a clown.

That was in the days when I thought humans were still worthy of a second chance... You'd have to take Tina out of your list, then, she isn't a musician anymore than Madonna is.
Tina Turner can sing her ass off (she uses her voice as an instrument, that makes her a musician...) Madonna can't sing or play any instruments (touching some strings on a guitar, pushing a key on a piano or hitting some skins on a drumkit doesn't make one a musician...) she just knows how to sell and present herself like any other product... Neversin.[/quote] I would never disagree that Tina is a better singer than Madonna, but I think Madonna CAN sing, even if it isn't to your particular tastes. If your definition of 'musician' includes artists who use their voice as an instrument, then you have to include ANYONE who uses their singing to make a living, the QUALITY of the vocal performance isn't integral to the definition, unless the definition in your dictionary is 'artists who use their voice as an instrument, and who Neversin thinks are good'!

There's a difference between "singing" (using your voice as an instrument that complements the other instruments played, Tina Turner, Kate Bush, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye etc.) and people who just wail, whisper, scream and shout words on music (All the Britney's (filtered and studio enhanced) Beyonce, Madonna, the whole plethora of so called vocalists in music today...) I'm not necessarily a fan of his, but I can't believe no one has mentioned Bruce Springsteen. Amongst touring mega-artists of the 80s I don't even think of Madonna, I think of MJ, Prince, and Springsteen.
And while they weren't exactly 80s artists, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones had some of the biggest tours of the decade. Wasn't the Stones' "Steel Wheels" tour in '89 the biggest money-maker of the 1980s?
