I was looking for the "Purple Reign" costume at a local Halloween shop, and the conversation with the clerk yielded this...(I live in Pittsburgh)

To paraphrase, she said that she heard the Prince was coming to Pittsburgh in January, for two shows (the 11th and 12th, she thought).

She said she was new to town, so she couldn't remember the exact channel she heard it on (but it was "the same station that plays the Simpsons"--I believe she meant Fox on Sunday), but a commercial stated that he was going to be performing benefit concerts with two other bands, and would be performing all of his greatest hits. (She wasn't sure who the other bands were, but she thought one of them had something to do with "fire and wind"...so I assume she was referring to Earth, Wind & Fire.)

I assumed she was just misinformed, but she kept adding details that made it sound as though she at least thought she was speaking the truth.

She seemed to be in her early 20's, and her father is a "huge Prince fan"...the commercial she heard was playing some of his songs and she recognized Purple Rain and "Under The Cherry something"... (UTCM in a commercial?)

Of course there is absolutely no news corroborating any of this, but what do you think she may have been referring to? (If, of course, she actually did hear some sort of commercial or announcement.)

Could the station have accidentally been playing an old Musicology commercial over some sort of another announcement? Is there some other tour happening similar to this (and she heard somebody blaring Purple Rain and UTCM next door)? Am I being pranked, punk'd, juiced, whatever? ("Let's screw with anybody that asks about the Prince costume!") Anything?

Yeah, if you'd been interested in the Ziggy Stardust outfit, she'd be telling you Bowie had reformed with the Spiders and was visiting Pittsburgh on the 'Back From Mars' tour anytime soon and this outfit would be in great demand so you better buy it quick...

Hmm no.. I think she was highly misguided or miinformed on this.
