The Brilliance of "7"

It has been said before and it deserves to be repeated: "7" is a freaking brilliant song! I was listening to it in the car this morning and the song impresses me with it's artistry every time I hear it. The lyrics are a little loopy at times but then his sing a line like "the young so educated they never grow old" and it just floors me. The beginning of the song with the acapella is just brilliant and I love the way P uses his multi-tracked voice in this song. At various points, it sounds like an army of Princes singing at one time. The song has so much going on but it is actually not overproduced, which happens so often when P's musical eyes get bigger than his stomach.

Love this song!

Over the years this has become one of my aboslute favorite Prince songs. It all started with my crew having it played at a few wedding receptions, so some very positive memories were attached to it. Then my obsession followed. I'm so happy it was such an important song in the Musicology tour as that forever cemented my adoration of the song.

I think the song is very unique, and a good argument could be made that it's the best thing he has ever done.

A very strong argument could be made that it is the best thing he has done in the last 15 years. It's in my Top 10 of all time.

I think it's an incredible song, but it could do without
a chorus or 2 in there.

Especially the beginning, that's just to much repeat of
the same lines.

But for the rest it's just pop perfection nod

There are an enormous number of words in the song in general...it may be one of the most verbose songs P has ever recorded. But it works somehow. He somehow turns a slightly muddled religious parable into a wonderful pop song.

"7" on the Madhouse 8 album is pretty cool as well! My favorite Madhouse track...

true

I particularly like the verse about

and there will be a new city
with streets of gold
the young so educated
they never grow old
and there will be no death
for with every breath
a voice of many colours
sings a song that's so bold

When I first played the prince album, the only song that jumped out at me was 7...I played it a few times over.

Still brilliant after all these years...

7 rocks. It's a great song. A major highlight on the prince album. I liked it even more when I saw him perform it live last year.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
