Who can name the earliest example of Prince using the expression 'on the 1' on an official release?

.

He used it during the Prince and The Revolution Live 1985 show, which was released on VHS - not sure about in-studio, though.

Does that count-- he used it on Posessed.

"Possessed" is correct - the earliest official (albeit VHS video) release, well done Booyah and Cinnamonjo

(The first vinyl release example was on "Mountains":

"Guitar and drums on the 1")

He used it on the 1999 tour as well.

No Princebonics.....

The One theory originally came from James Brown.....

The true meaning of Funk is the One.....

P-Funk adopted that theory for their grooves also.....

Surprise the heck outta me when Prince started to use it...

Because back then in his early interviews, he would say he wasn't influence by anyone, when you can hear J.B. & P-Funk all over his grooves....

Pill hit it on the head. James Brown is the one who started this. It's James's phrase. And it's James Prince is biting off of when he says this.

Snap

"on the 1" means FUNK
most music is on the 2 and 4
ragtime is on the 1 and 3
but funk is on the 1, period.
listen for the accent in most funk tunes
funk hits hard on the 1
dancing jig

I was told by a jazz teacher that a "turnaround" is usually a section that helps you get back to the beginning of hte song. It's like a bridge in a way, but it kind of brings you back to the beginning structure when it's done.

Also, Prince used to say "Everybody stop on the 1" and then shortened it to "on the 1".

How about "Squirrel Meat"?
