Well, if you feel like having a Prince discussion, it's good to ascertain the level of fandom you're dealing with. Ask them about something a die-hard would know about, but not necessarily a casual listener.
"What'd you think of Chocolate Invasion" or something like that. If they look at you like then just stick to the basics or talk about something else.

I kick them in the genitals and say "Quit your complaining.....". [Edited 10/14/05 10:52am] "New Power slide...."

the ultimate litmus test is to ask 'em what their favorite album is. more than likely you'll get the tried and true "i liked purple rain" answer, but if they answer with something different than that, then you'll know.

I USED to think that way, until I realized that "Purple Rain" is my favorite Prince album and I consider myself a pretty knowledgable fan. And yes, I do have "The Chocolate Invasion." C'mon, "Purple Rain" IS, if not his best album, it's definitely in most of our top 3. It's just too bad it doesn't have Electric Intercourse, the extended versions, etc.

I'd say it's fair game to judge them on if they say Purple Rain, because if they don't you know you're onto something. Also, fav. songs is a good one; if they say "Raspberry Beret, Kiss and Let's go Crazy" you know you got a casual

[Edited 10/14/05 10:52am] You know you've run into a real Prince fan when you hear them complaining. The non-fans don't care. Andy is a four letter word.

I write down "wreckastowe" on a piece of paper and if they don't know what I mean, I shake my head and walk away. All good things they say never last...

The same way I'd "approach" a hungry bear protecting it's young.
No sudden remarks of his relationship with Mani & avoid any eye contact.

It would be great, b'cos u could discuss about various aspects of Prince and havely Princely arguments, , what about which albums u do and don't like. Finding this site was a revelation as I have Prince lovers all around me.
Purple Rain, ok it sold 17,000,000 copies so its the one album most people remember when u say it, but its still agreat album. Just listen to When Doves Cry and tell me its not. Regardless of its chart position thats a great song and it must be a joining thread in the world of Princely worship. Perhaps all us hardcore ones should pool our resources and do a mass visit to Paisley Park. I could honestly talk Prince all day, Prince is the water I drink at times. I do wish we had another kiwi on this fansite too. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

Besides us hardcores would agree that Sign of the Times is in our top three albums too. It was moderately successful and had 3 Top 10 hits, so but u know in that answer there is some death. To face it some of the mans Music makes ur hair stand on end, Perhap Prince should discuss it. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

It's tricky though--I was at a wedding a couple of weeks ago and, of course, I wanted to request a Prince song from the band. The guy seated next to me surprised me by mentioning Lady Cab Driver, which to me signaled "more than casual" (b/c it wasn't a major hit, and it was from an album before Purple Rain). However, upon more conversation he ended up being casual because he didn't really know anything else about Prince after Purple Rain. He was a purple poser. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

There are tons of people out there that have everything Prince ever made from the beginning through "Purple Rain" but they dropped him because they didn't like the direction he went in after "Purple Rain". Andy is a four letter word.
