How much of the Rainbow Children was released?

How much of Prince's album "The Rainbow Children" had the diehard fans heard before it was released in stores? I remember hearing "The Work" before it came out. Did Prince release more songs off it before it's release to his official website? I know this is a very techinal question but I'd really appreciate a response. Thank you guys! biggrin

The whole album was released as a download on NPGMC (as one loooong track)
over a month before it was released in stores.

And before the release, the album had first been aired at the 2001 Celebration at Paisley Park at listening parties throughout the week to attendees, commencing the morning of 11 June 2001.

Prior to this, The Work Pt 1 had been released, originally via Napster (6 April 2001) although the version of The Work Pt.1 issued as a single differs slightly from the album version.

Does that version somehow not suck?

"She Loves Me For Me" was released as a cybersingle on the online promotional site before the NPGMC download was made available.

Wow, I never knew this. So there are two versions of "The Work Pt.1"? confused What's the difference between the two - different instrumentation or just an edit? The album version finishes with the slowed-down narrator (so it segues nicely into the next track). Is that the only difference? If so, then I don't count it as an alternate version.

No. The instrumental break in the middle is completely different. It features Prince doing little descending runs on both guitar and electric piano (at the same time! - guitar with left hand and piano with the right) and omits the "gotta lotta work to do" lines if I remember correctly.
