Wait a minute...

What country are you from? These results do not reflect chart positions and dates for Billboard charts in the United States.

its strange, in england the songs you would have thought would have done well, like diamonds and pearls and rasberry beret (to name but two)only got top 30, whereas songs like my name is prince and gold got high in the charts!

It's okay, but I wouldn't say it was worthy of number 1. There are a few singles that you would have expected to do better - but without knowing the competition at the time and level of promotion, it can give a bit of a false image. Batdance was prevented from reaching number 1 by something I think.

As far as The Holy River, Prince said Warner's wouldn't let him release this sort of single, about god or too religious sounding, so it was his way of showing his freedom. He performed this one on Top of the Pops, ever see that? Great guitar solo.

It's a pretty good chart history really compared to a lot of artists - but for a complete picture, we need to add singles that failed to chart. In the UK if it doesn't get in the top 40 it is said to have failed to chart, so Cinnamon Girl would fall in that category. What about The Greatest Romance? Any others?

"The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" is Prince's best known tune in Europe. Not "Purple Rain" or "Kiss". Certainly not "Kiss".

I'm surprised Diamonds and Pearls didn't do too well. That's the main tune most non-fans remember from that album(in the states), not Cream.

Hardly everyone. Prince's two best-known songs are "Purple Rain" and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" in Europe. I have never heard "When Doves Cry" played on radio, ever. "Nothing Compares 2 U" is well-known, as are some of the hits from "Diamonds & Pearls" (namely "Diamonds & Pearls" and "Cream"). Everyone of my age group remembers "Sexy MF", but that's just because of the profanity value. Some folks still recognize "Batdance". "Kiss" is quite known, but very few non-Prince fans know "Let's Go Crazy", "U Got The Look" or "Little Red Corvette".

Good point.

There was a documentary about Britney Spears beginnings on the other night - the first song she sung on the Mickey Mouse Club was, to quote the program, 'A cover of Chaka Khan's 'I Feel 4 U''.

Grrrrr....

batdance was prevented form getting to No.1 by the london store not expecting such sales and totally running out of stock
