SOLO! -- I didn't know.

I have alot of Prince compilation CD's so I don't always listen to my albums or cassettes - However, this morning I was digging through my crates and I saw 'Letitgo' on cassette single, of course I popped it in because I havn't listened to it in a long time but on the other side was 'Solo' mm mm mm music I loved it - I was young when I bought this tape so I never heard it and it's so beautiful - and I just wanted to share that with people who would appreciate it.

The song sucks...it's 2 self indulgent & 'look at me I can sing high notes' like 'God' (vocal version cos the instrumental version rocks) and would make even the most 'loyal' prince geek cringe with nausea. neutral

I love "solo"! I wish Prince would do more non-pop stuff. And more collaborations.

Listening to Solo is the equivalent of listening to someone drag a nail across a chalkboard.

At first listen, you think for a quick sec, "Ooooh, haunting..." By the fourth listen, you're thinking, "Knock that shit off. My ears! MY BLESSED EARS!!"

It is the single scar on the Come album.

The lyrics to Solo were written by David Henry Hwang.

Do Me Baby was released in 1981, 24 years ago. It was worked on in sessions with Pepe Willie in 1979, who says really Andre Cymone wrote it.

not at all, but I also listen to modern classical music by Penderecki and György Ligeti which sometimes gets to be over the top melodramatic "horror music" So I like really moody stuff in your face stuff. Plus the lyrics to "Solo" are so much better than many quickly tossed out prince songs... of course my friends refer to Solo as the track you put on when relaxing and sitting on the toilet.

By the same token, I think "Bob George" was a creative summit for Prince.

You must be completely missing the point. Read the lyrics quickly:

Solo

So low, the curb looks like a skyscraper
So high, the stars are under me
So quiet, I can hear the blood rushin' through my veins
So low, I feel like I'm goin' insane
The angels, they watch in wonder
When U made love 2 me
Through the rain and the thunder
U cried in ecstacy
U were so kind
I felt sorry 4 all creation be
Cuz at the time, no one was lucky
No one was lucky, no one was lucky as me
And now U're gone and I just wanna be still
So silent, I'll just let my senses sleep
It's gonna be so hard 2 hear my voice
If I ever learn once more 2 speak
I'm so lost, no one can find me
And I've been looking 4 so long
But now I'm done
I'm so low, so low, my name is "No One"

The song is about being on your own after a relationship. The arrangement on the song is simple and haunting, like the feeling one has when they are recently left alone. This song captures this perfectly. I always felt that’s what the song was about before knowing what all the lyrics were. Add to it the sound effects of the tumultuous storm that is in the background and you get the mood the song is going for.

It’s a testament to the varied sound that Prince can put on wax. He’s a true artist who can cover many facets, this one being one of them. Now, as for the flow on the album, many say it doesn’t flow well with the rest of the album. I disagree. Most of the album is dark. Even the cover has dark overtones. This goes perfectly with that motif. About the only “sore thumb” to the album would be maybe Orgasm, but that’s another story for another day…

Walking alone in the dark, I see nothing u see
I can be in a park, or flying in the…in the deep sea
I wish u’d hold my hand; then everything could b
There’s nothing strange, we’re not deranged
We only want everyday 2 b a Cosmic Day

Those high notes just kill me. It's like Prince trying to do opera. I just can't into it. Hey, I'm allowed at least a minimum of 12 Prince songs to not be into, and Solo is one of them.
