Just For Fun: Track Crystal Ball II

Most folks on this site are aware that P was, at one point, preparing to drop a Crystal Ball II CD set. Word was, it would have been two discs, and shipped in The Truth and Kama Sutra CD sleeves (so you could take those discs out of the set, and replace them with the new "disc four" and "disc five"). Well, it was a brilliant idea, but (since Prince has the attention span of a gnat) he lost interest in it and moved on to some other project.

Now, there were a few songs that were confirmed to be included in the project (I'll let someone else dig up that info), but it definitely wasn't enough material for two discs, so what would YOU have included to round out this project?

Tracks for a proposed release were chosen by fans at the 2000 Celebration. 22 tracks were available, and the final 17 songs chosen were:

Electric Intercourse
Love & Sex
Xtralovable
3 Nigs Watchin' A Kung Fu Movie
Evolsidog
Adonis & Batsheeba
Eye Wonder
Others Here With Us
American Jam
Lust U Always
Strange Way of Saying Eye Love U
Everybody Wants What They Don't Got
Girl 'O'My Dreams
U're All Eye Want
Turn It Up
Kiss (Xtended Version) - (Not the released 12" version)
Katrina's Paper Dolls

The ones unchosen were:

She's just a baby
Gotta stop (messin' about)
If it'll make U happy
Come Electra Tuesday
Girl

That's not to say that would've been the final tracklist, it was just the ones chosen by fans.

I'll have a think about what 2CD I woulda like to have seen smile

OK, I picked 24 tracks, 12 per disc - I haven't heard all these tracks, but, that's kinda the point razz

CD1:
01 - Machine (1976)
02 - Love In The Morning (1976/7)
03 - Shine Your Light (1977)
04 - Make It Through The Storm (1977)
05 - Waiting For You (1977)
06 - Rock Me, Lover (1978/9)
07 - Rocking Chair (1978/9)
08 - American Jam (1980)
09 - Big Brass Bed (1980)
10 - Bulgaria (1980)
11 - Plastic Love Affair (1980)
12 - When The Shit Comes Down (1980)

CD2:
01 - Dear Uncle George (1981)
02 - Gym Class (1981)
03 - Heart Attack (1981)
04 - Kiss Me Quick (1981)
05 - Jealous Girl (1981)
06 - Pizza (1981)
07 - Susan (1981)
08 - Delivery Boy (1981)
09 - Bold Generation (1981/2)
10 - Vagina (1981/2)
11 - Moral Majority (1981/2)
12 - Rearrange (1981/2)

(Dates from the recording sessions part of The Vault).

I focused on 24 tracks from 1976-1982, because that's the era that interests me the most right now - AND being chronological makes it nice and easy to follow up with another volume razz

I'm really diggin' this one, Boris. Seems you chose a good mix of freely circulating outtakes, as well as more obscure numbers. I noticed you stuck to the 10 songs per disc format. Is this to preserve the symmetry of the set?

The remix of "Come" that you list, is this the original, long version from "Glam Slam Ulysses, or another version I'm not aware of?

These would be real cool to have in a set, although I would rather see them grouped on their own, rather than as a continuation of the CB set. Perhaps a CB style, "Early Outtakes" three disc set? Hey, dish up a third disc for that one!

Yes I kept it to 10 tracks to match the original 3 Crystal Ball discs.
I included Come-Remix (which would actually be the original Glam Slam Ulysses
version) as a) I really like it, and b) the other Crystal Ball discs included
other alternate versions of Come tracks. I also tried to get the discs to
'flow' a bit (though obviously I'm not familiar with the actual sound of
some of the tracks). I always loved the idea of Crystal Ball II, and thought
it was a great pity the idea got shelved.

Completely agree on all your points. I would LOVE to have that version of "Come" on a studio mastered CD. In my opinion, it is FAR superior to the album version.

It was from the Rave era. I'm actually quite surprised it didn't surface in the first year of the NPGMC.

I think it would be cool if Crystal Ball 2 also included some of Prince's original versions of songs he wrote for other artists, like hearing Prince sing Cool by the Time, or Glamorous Life by Sheila E. I doubt that'll ever happen, but that's also my wish for a live set of his some day.

Yes, I would love to have P singing "Love, Thy Will Be Done". As well as several of Jill's songs.
