did grafitti bridge kill any hopes of another Prince movie?

i know some folks would say it was really UTCM that did it, but i remember a movie exec saying that he would get the green light with GB, since one out of 2 movies bombing wasn't that bad. BUT..since the movie tanked, did that kill any future planned projects?

Snap

There was a blurb in Rolling Stone back in 1989/1990 that Prince was working with Alan Leeds on several movies, one was Graffiti Bridge. What happened to the others?

Without any doubt, this is absolutely true! Grafitti Bridge is one of the worst movies ever made in the history of mankind.

Yes, and I hate to say it, it's a good thing.

I love both Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon. I find myself defending both films in conversation with friends, but GB is a different story.

To me UTCM was much like The Around the World in a Day album. It was something that defied expectation, met a lot of resistance from both critics and casual fans, and has actually improved with age.

Prince could have had an interested acting career, but only if he was willing to show the side that he did in Purple Rain. He conveyed a darkness that would have made him an interesting screen presence, but he has never returned to that. His role as Christopher Tracy in UTCM was the filp side, funny and light, and showed an interesting range.

GB as a film is terribly flawed. As a glorified music video it's still flawed. The performance scenes never seem "live" like they did in Purple Rain. The plot is cluttered and the acting is cringe inducing.

I went to see GB opening night, and knew the movie was bad when halfway through I had to pee. In a good movie, I'll hold it, but this time I got up and took care of it. Oops, maybe I've shared too much.

if prince gave up control i am sure any of todays directors would kill for a chance to "prove his true talent" on the big screen..

theres a huge trend for that right now in hollywood..it gives directors creed....curtis hanson, paul thomas anderson, peter wier, vondi curtis, jim sheridan have all took the gamble... all but curtis succeeded....sheridan's test is coming up...

but the question is, will prince give up "control" to someone who is more skilled in a subject then he? hmmm

I'd love to see Prince work with Quentin, but the language would prevent that. Although I hear Eddie Murphy is working with QT, so you never know, anything can happen.

The other three movies were:

'The Robert Johnson Story' in which Prince would play the famous blues musician from the 40s.

'Dark Side Of The Moon' which was a documentary on Prince's career

'The Dawn' described as a "street-oriented sequel to Graffiti Bridge"

Alan Leeds was Prince's manager at the time, and the plan was for him to direct all of these movies. He and Prince were going to develop a movie-making partnership. However,he got into a major disagreement with Prince over the direction of 'GB' and walked out of the project. It's obvious that the failure of 'GB' prevented the other three films from being made.

Exactly. Things change continually. Prince could have a smash hit bigger than Purple Rain if he felt like it.

Proberly.

It was WB's money that he used wasn't it?

But he still made "3 chains o gold". Prince is no actor. But I do love "grafitti bridge". Its so naive, whimsical and silly. Sorta like "wizard of oz". I want to live in a place where morris and Prince battle it out every night and it seems to be dark all the time. Sounds cool.
